Deaths resulting from acts of homicide, suicide, or accident, and those constituting a threat to public health, fall under the jurisdiction of the medical examiner (Ch , Florida Statutes). For this reason, the medical examiner takes custody of any such death to verify identity, determine the cause of death, and initiate the death certificate.
