The One MC Volume 13, Issue 6: June 2008 COMMANDER S LOG OUR CREED: To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in pursuit of their duties while serving their country, that their dedication, deeds, and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States. Greetings, fellow shipmates, associates and friends! This Commander s Log is sent with thanks to All Hands who attended the June meeting and had a chance to socialize over a great cookout. It was also made more enjoyable with good attendance by old friends, former Base Commanders, and shipmates! We have agreed that we will participate in the Lorton 4th of July Parade, as we did last year, in coordination with the American Legion Post 162. I look forward to seeing a great turnout in honor of our freedom. Guidance regarding dress code, muster time, and supplies was sent to all members by separate by our new COB Rob Smallbrock. Thanks Rob for all you have done in numerous areas of responsibility. In addition, congratulations to Tim Shannon on his assignment Eastern Region North, District 4 Commander. There are a lot of plans in the development on how to really increase activities within the District. In fact, we will be hosting the District meeting here and as plans develop will keep all members informed of the details. This will be discussed in general at the July Base meeting - there is a lot to look for in the future! As a reminder, please make sure you vote in the USSVI National Elections, the future of the organization is dependent on each member. With respect to the base, the July meeting will also have book sale/auction to help fund the key event of the year, the Holland Club Dinner at the Army-Navy Country Club. It is a chance to purchase a great book that you had hoped to read for years for but never purchased. I bet there will be a lot of good works available for your consideration. Also, I believe All Hands are aware that our deepest sympathy goes out to Ron and Peggy Williams on the recent loss in the fam- CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 WARDROOM Base Commander Tom Perrault (703) cdr@ussvinova.org Vice Commander Joe Phoenix (703) vcdr@ussvinova.org Secretary/Historian Mark Riethmeier (703) secretary@ussvinova.org Treasurer Steve Jaeger (703) treasurer@ussvinova.org Chaplain Tom Phythian (703) chaplain@ussvinova.org Storekeeper/ Veterans Affairs Lou Maruzo (540) Lou@subshipstore.com Chief of the Boat Tim Shannon cob@ussvinova.org On the Web at: MEETINGS Held on the second Saturday of each month at 1100: American Legion Post Legion Drive Lorton, Virginia

Chaplain s The Ships Bell and Mid Watches. Corner A Ship's Bell is usually made of brass, and has the ship's name engraved on it. In the days of iron men and wooden ships, each watch would take its turn with the essential activities of manning the helm, navigating, trimming sails, and keeping a lookout. Strikes of a ship's bell are used to indicate the hour aboard a ship and thereby to regulate the sailors' duty watches. Remember watches, usually in port, they were port and starboard. We d look for our relief to come through the hatch about quarter to the hour. There was always the occasional guy who d relieve at the hour, thus the term is coined bell tapper. There was even a term called dogging the watch when the watch was split to enable meals to be served and also to ensure folks didn t always stand the same watch. Yet another term is "Eight bells" can also be a way of saying that a sailor's watch is over, for instance, in his or her obituary. It's a nautical euphemism for "finished". At USSVI NOVA Base, we remember those on eternal patrol with two rings of the clapper. The bell is also used to announce the arrival and departure of the commander officer or other officers of flag rank and dignitries Ship's bells are also used for safety in foggy CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 COMMANDER S CORNER, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ily. Kris Knowlton s service was held last Saturday in Manassas and there was an excellent turn-out of Base members. Our Base Chaplin, Tom Phythian, led the service and our deepest sympathies were expressed to all of the family. The burial services are scheduled for Monday, June 30th, 2008 and this information was passed to all members by separate message. I know that a number of us will be attending the burial at Quantico National Cemetery, Joplin Road, Triangle, Virginia at 10:45 AM. Finally, please continue to keep all our shipmates and forces deployed in your thoughts and prayers. To maintain the tradition of the USSVI and history of the submarine force, active participation is vital to maintaining the history of United States Submarine Force. Once again, thanks to all hands for the support and participation in the Base and I look forward to seeing you at the 4th of July Parade and July 12th meeting. Fraternally, Tom Tom Perrault Base Commander USSVI Northern Virginia Base A NOTE OF THANKS... Dear Submarine Veterans, On behalf of myself and the entire Knowlton family, I would like to thank you for all your kindness and thoughtfulness during our time of sorrow. I know that Kris & I have met most of you at one time or another and want you to know that all you have done is greatly appreciated. Special Regards, Kirsten, Robert, Ashley & Kelley 2

CHAPLAIN S CORNER, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 conditions, their most important modern use. A ship's bell is a prized possession when a ship is broken up, and often provide the only positive means of identification in the case of a shipwreck. The men of the USS Nautilus found another unique use for the ships bells in December Jennifer Papineau was baptized using the ships bell. Papineau, whose father was the ship's engineer at the time, was the first - and only - baby baptized on the Nautilus, the Navy's first nuclear-powered submarine and the first vessel to cross the North Pole. The crew took the ship's brass bell off the sail and sealed the hole on top with heavy grease for the religious ceremony. Then they flipped it over and added holy water. Papineau was bundled in blankets to protect her from the snow, held over the bell and baptized on the Nautilus at the Naval Submarine Base on Dec. 3, Her full name, Jennifer Louise Papineau, and the date, were engraved on the bell. The Bible makes reference to both bells and watches. In Exodus it speaks of the bells attached to the hem of the garments of the priest. These bells were made of gold. Mark 6:48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch[3am to sunrise] of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. There is no story of baptizing a baby with water from the ship s bell but I think it s a cool story. Blessing to all. ~ Tom Phythian Base Chaplain Submarine Reunions and Conventions USS Diablo SS-479 The 2008 U.S.S. 4 Historian s Corner: Loss Of The USS S-27 S (SS-132) June 19, No Men Lost. S-27 (SS-132) was built by the Fore River Plant, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, MA and commissioned at Groton, CT on 22 January 1924, Lt. Theodore Waldschmidt in command. Based out of San Diego, S-27 operated primarily off southern California with brief patrols off the west coast of Central America, the Panama Canal Zone and the Caribbean. From 1931 until mid-1939, she was operating out of Pearl Harbor, but was once again transferred back to San Diego, arriving on 27 June She then resumed operations off the southern California coast, conducting exercises and tests for the Underwater Sound Training School. In late November 1941, she proceeded to Mare Island, where she was undergoing overhaul when the United States entered World War II. On 23 January 1942, S-27 stood out of San Francisco Bay and returned to San Diego, resuming operations for the Sound School which continued into the spring. On 20 May 1942, she departed San Diego with orders north to the Aleutians. She steamed to Alaskan waters where she commenced patrol operations in June. On the night of 16 June, she was ordered to Kiska. Finding no signs of enemy activity, in mid afternoon of the 18th, she rounded East Cape and that night when she surfaced, fog obscured her position. Lying on the surface to recharge batteries, she drifted about five miles from her estimated position. The fog prevented knowledge of the drift. At midnight, she got underway, slowly, on one engine. Soon after 0043 on the 19th, breakers were sighted about 25 yards forward of the bow. "Back emergency" orders were given. Seconds later, she grounded on rocks off St. Makarius Point. Waves slammed her against the rocks, rolling her 10 to 15 degrees on each side. Her starboard screw struck a rock and was disabled. All attempts to break free were unsuccessful which included back emergencies and dumping fuel to lighten the ship. A total of six dispatches were sent starting at 0115 to alert the Navy of her situation. Realizing that there was no hope to free the ship, using a rubber boat and lines rigged between the ship and the beach, was set up, and men, provisions, clothing, guns, and medical supplies were transferred safely. By 1100, all but six, the commanding officer, Lt. H. L. Jukes, and five others, were ashore. All equipment was destroyed. Classified material was burned. At 1530, three of the remaining men went ashore. The side plating was now loose, the torpedo room was flooding. At 1550, the radioman, executive officer, and commanding officer left the submarine. The night of June was spent in an unsheltered cove. On the 20th, camp was set up at Constantine Harbor, using the buildings and heating equipment which had survived a Japanese bombing. By the 21st, the camp was fully organized: routines, including sentries and lookouts, had been established. the 24th, a PBY on a routine flight spotted them; landed; and took off 15 of the survivors. On the 25th, three planes were sent in to bring off the remainder. 4

News From Around The Fleet San Diego Sub Vets Propose 52 Boat Memorial home.san.rr.com City Park on the waterfront that will be one of the crown jewels of the City park system. Already being referred to as "Balboa by the Bay," in reference to San Diego's world famous Balboa Park, the new park at Liberty Station will have athletic facilities including a swimming pool complex, picnic areas, hiking trails, a nature preserve, and a central plaza the size of three football fields designed around the 52 Boats Memorial. The design of the memorial includes a planting of 52 American Liberty Elm trees, one for each of the lost boats. The trees will line broad The motto of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of WW II is to: "Perpetuate the memory of those shipmates who gave their lives in submarine warfare." In 1995 the San Diego Chapter voted unanimously to create a memorial to the 52 U.S. Navy submarines and the more than 3500 American submariners lost in World War II, and work began with the San Diego Park & Recreation Dept. to find a suitable location. The city suggested the new park that was going to be created on the grounds of the former Naval Training Center San Diego, which had been designated for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRACC). All military operations ceased at the base in 1997 and the land was reconveyed to the City of San Diego. The City of San Diego developed a master plan for the use of the 328 acre site that includes the restoration and preservation of many of the historic buildings. It also includes a new 40 acre sidewalks that flank the plaza on two sides leading down to the waters edge. In front of each tree will be a black granite monument laser etched with the name and picture of one of the lost boats, the circumstances of the boat's loss and the names of all the men who were lost with the boat. A provision will be made to fly a flag at each monument on the anniversary of the boat's loss. On national holidays and other special events, all 52 flags will be flown. Other monuments and trees will honor submariners lost in World War II on boats that survived the war, and submarines lost at times other than World War II. 6

First Step A Success For Russian Sub Salvage Operation By Daniel Barbarisi, The Providence Journal, June 26, 2008 Just after 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Juliett 484, the sunken Russian missile submarine resting on its side on the bottom of Providence harbor, poked above the water for the first time in more than a year. The conning tower of the Cold War-era missile sub came out of the water gradually, rising over the course of an hour until the red star, symbol of the Soviet navy, was fully visible. After a year underwater, the hull was rusted slightly, and flecked with green and gray from the marine life that has grown on it. Most of the submarine remains underwater, but it is now sitting mostly upright, and on track to be brought fully to the surface around July 15. The submarine, a museum ship in Providence since 2002, had been on its side in the 35-foot-deep water off Collier Point Park since it sank in a storm in April The sub lay at a 48-degree angle, with the tower facing East Providence. The military salvage team, which is refloating the submarine as a training exercise, needed to pull the submarine upright and stabilize it before they could try to bring it fully to the surface. It still rests on the bottom of the harbor, but now it tilts at roughly a 7- to 10-degree angle. As the top of the submarine broke the surface yesterday evening, a team of Navy and Army divers and salvage experts breathed a sigh of relief. This was the most important and dangerous moment in the year-long process of raising the sunken submarine, and it went off without a problem. If they had miscalculated even slightly, the submarine could break the suction holding it to the harbor floor, and leap out of the water toward the pier, causing a catastrophe on the water s edge. If the guys have calculated this wrong, and we break that suction unexpectedly, it ll take this whole station out, said Navy Master Chief Ross Garcia. It would cut through this stuff like floss through hot butter, he said. The teams spent much of the day yesterday pulling on the submarine using wires attached to six giant hydraulic motors. They would tug at the sub, check the resistance, then pump water out of the submarine to lighten it. This process went on all day, until at 5:30 p.m., the submarine began to turn slightly. The salvage team will now allow the submarine to settle for several days, and ensure that the water still inside does not shift around and cause the submarine to move again. They will then put large pontoons on either side of the boat to stabilize it. Once it is locked in place, divers will burrow under the submarine and place inflatable equipment called belly bands underneath the sub. When the remaining water is pumped out, and the belly bands are inflated, it should give the submarine the buoyancy it needs to rise to the surface. If we get this thing to come up right, it ll be quite historic, Garcia said. There s no history in sub salvage to indicate that any project has gone successfully. Juliett 484 was commissioned by the Soviet Union in 1965 and served in the Soviet Baltic and Northern fleets until its decommissioning in It was then sold and moved to Helsinki, Finland, to become a restaurant. When that venture failed, it was sold to a group in St. Petersburg, Fla., where it became a museum. In 2001, the submarine was used in the filming of the Cold War thriller K-19: The Widowmaker, starring Harrison Ford. Navy Christens New Hampshire By Lt. James Stockman, Navy News, June 23, 2008 GROTON, Conn. The Navy christened its newest Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine "New Hampshire" June 21, at General Dynamics Electric Boat at Groton, Conn. This christening marks the fourth time the U.S. Navy named a ship after the Granite State. The service awarded the name to the submarine after third-graders from Garrison Elementary School in Dover, N.H., wrote letters to Congress members, the governor and the Secretary of the Navy. Adm. Kirkland Donald, Naval Nuclear Propulsion director, gave the principal remarks and spoke about the New Hampshire's way ahead. "There still is a lot of hard work to be done," said Donald. "New Hampshire is entering the fleet during a time of conflict. The missions of this new submarine are vital to victory in this war on terrorism." Ship sponsor Cheryl McGuinness, a resident of Portsmouth, N.H., christened the boat by breaking a bottle of sparkling champagne over the submarine at the Groton shipyard. Her husband, Tom, died on Sept. 11, He co-piloted American Airlines Flight 11, an aircraft flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center that day. "I'm looking at many heroes," said McGuinness as she spoke to the more than 130 New Hampshire crew members standing before her. "You are all my heroes." McGuinness added after the ceremony that the New Hampshire symbolizes a new journey of protecting freedom. She says she plans to do all she can to support the New Hampshire and it's crew. New Hampshire is scheduled to be commissioned in October at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. As the Navy's next-generation attack submarine, the Virginia class will provide the U.S. Navy with the capabilities it requires to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. New Hampshire will have improved stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and Special Warfare enhancements that will enable it to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements. 7

50 Year Later, Nautilus Crew Still Feels It Could Repeat Polar Feat By Jennifer Grogan, The Day, June 30, 2008 Groton - Former USS Nautilus crew members say it does not seem like 50 years have passed since they made their historic crossing of the North Pole under the ice cap, and that if the Navy would kindly give them another nuclear power plant, they could man their ship and head back out to sea. When you first join the Navy and look forward to 20 years and retirement, you say, 'That's forever.' I put 28 in and it seems like it all happened just yesterday, said Al Charette, a sonarman on board for the North Pole trip. Every time we have a reunion, the crew thinks we should go out and get that ship underway. We're ready. We're still a crew. We remember each little feature of rigging it for dive. We feel very confident we could do that again, said Jack Kurrus, an engineman also on the trip. Wouldn't it be nice to go to sea one more time? Nautilus (SSN 571) left Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on July 23, 1958, under top-secret orders to conduct Operation Sunshine, the first crossing of the North Pole by a ship. About 10 months earlier, the Soviet Union had launched the first artificial satellite into space. We wanted to out-sputnik the Russians, Charette said. The crew of 116 men reached the North Pole at 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 3, They received the Presidential Unit Citation, the first ever issued in peacetime. Charette, Kurrus and another former crew member, Joe Degnan, were at the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum Friday for the unveiling of a new exhibit that commemorates the 50th anniversary of their voyage. The exhibit, which includes artifacts and previously unpublished color images, runs through March The successful 1958 trip was not the Nautilus' first attempt to cross from the Pacific to the Atlantic over the top of the world. The crew was in the Arctic a year earlier to see how the submarine would operate under the ice. When the ship lost power to its gyrocompasses, Cmdr. William R. Anderson gave the order to turn back because there was no way to fix the ship's position. We spent 72 hours trying to find our way out and that was really, really scary, Kurrus said. Nautilus visited the Pacific in 1958, under the cover of teaching those in the Pacific Fleet about nuclear submarines. The submarine headed to the North Pole but encountered heavy ice and shallow water on the way. At one point, the 320-foot submarine had just a few feet of water over its sail and about 20 feet below the keel. The crew returned to Pearl Harbor and waited a month for the ice to break up and melt before making another attempt to go to Portland, England, by way of the North Pole. Kenneth Carr, who was then a lieutenant and later retired as a vice admiral, said it was pretty routine on board as they neared 90 degrees North on Aug. 3, Carr said he asked the scientist on the trip, how will we know we crossed the pole? Dr. Waldo K. Lyon pointed to a machine with a green dot going around in a circle. He said the dot would stop and go in the other direction, and it did, Carr said. It wasn't anything dramatic. Once the Nautilus surfaced, Anderson sent a message to the Navy- Nautilus 90 North. I'm not sure we really appreciated the depth of what had just happened, and I think it was a long time before any of us realized it, Charette said. All we knew was when we ended up in England, everyone and their brother wanted an autograph. Those on board nicknamed themselves PANOPOs, an acronym from the phrase from the Pacific to the Atlantic via the North Pole. A Welcome Home PANOPOs banner is one of the artifacts on display in the new exhibit. Sarah Martin, who works at the Naval Submarine Base, was the graphic designer for the exhibit. Several events are planned at the museum leading up to the anniversary, including a book signing and lecture by Alfred McLaren about the USS Queenfish on July 12 and by Don Keith about the Nautilus on Aug. 2, and a ceremony on the Nautilus Aug. 3. The Nautilus Alumni Association is planning a reunion Sept at the Groton Inn and Suites. 8
