6 Americans Join the War Effort I. Immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor many men volunteered for military service A. Over 5 million men volunteered for service in World War II II. The US government once again initiated the Selective Service Act to add more American troops A. The draft ensured the USA would have enough troops for the all out war B. 10 million soldiers were drafted for service in WW2

7 Women Join The Effort I. Women were not allowed to serve in combat roles but helped the military in other ways II. WAC Women s Army Corps allowed women to fill non-combat jobs in the army which freed up men to go fight A. WAC filled office jobs, secretaries, nurses and other army positions

8 Minorities Serve the USA I. Over 1 million black troops served in WW2 along with over 300,000 Mexican Americans II. Asian Americans (including many Japanese Americans) and over 25,000 Native Americans served during WW2 A. N.A. used as code-talkers that were used to keep Japanese from breaking secret codes III. World War II involved nearly every racial group and gender in the USA

9 Industry Shifts to War Production I. After the outbreak of war American industries quickly shifted over to war production A. Industrial production skyrocketed as the American economy boomed once again II. In World War II the USA s large industrial manufacturing base would be called on to win another world war III. Production of consumer goods completely stopped and factories began focusing on war production A. Factories produced as many as one bomber every hour; shipyards were putting out one battleship every four days, 4 jeeps every 3 minutes, over 40 billion bullets a years

12 Women Become the Workforce I. During World War II women made up the majority of the American workforce II. Some feared that women; could not handle factory work but were proved wrong III. The industrial work performed by women was a key contributor to American victory in World War II Rosie the riveter became a symbol of female pride & respect

14 Scientists Mobilize For War I. During WW2 scientific discovery and innovation became a critical part of winning the war A. The nation with the most advanced military technology would win II. President FDR created the Office of Scientific Research and Development to develop new technologies used for war A. Radar, Sonar, Penicillin, Pesticides III. The OSRD s most significant technological achievement was developing the atomic bomb (the first nuclear weapon) A. German scientists first discovered how to split an atom à releases enormous amounts of energy B. The USA will duplicate the German discovery to create a weapon more powerful than every before C. The Manhattan Project became the code name for the American program to create an atomic weapon

15 American Life During World War II I. Similar to World War I the power and control of the federal government grew during World War II A. Government controls the USA politically, economically and socially II. The U.S. government sold Americans war bonds to help pay for the war effort III. The War Production Board managed industrial manufacturing and set up scrap metal drives for war materials IV. The federal government also restricted the amount of goods supplied to the American people to ensure soldiers had what they needed to win the war A. Families were given rationing books which limited the amount of goods they were allowed to buy

24 Discrimina=on During WW2 I. During war=me the U.S. government is given large amounts of power and authority over the American people II. In World War II the American people and the U.S. government feared that many Japanese-Americans would side with Japan A. Americans believed that Japanese people were tricky, backstabbers, cheaters (Pearl Harbor) B. People feared that Japanese-Americans were spying for Japan and sending informa=on to their homeland III. FDR found a solu=on to the problem facing the American war effort

25 Execu3ve Order 9066 I. FDR signed Execu=ve Order 9066 in February 1942 which allowed the U.S. to move Japanese-Americans to internment camps A. They would be held here to ensure that they did nothing to hurt the American war effort II. Japanese-Americans were held against their wills at interment camps all throughout the southwest USA

30 Japanese Internment Camps I. The majority of people sent to these interment camps were American ci=zens!!! II. Japanese-Americans were upset with their loss of freedoms and forced internment III. The Supreme Court was called to rule on whether Japanese internment was allowed under the Cons=tu=on IV. In the case of Korematsu vs. US the SCOTUS ruled that the internment of Japanese-Americans was allowed as a military necessity

31 The War At Home I. World War II led to many changes domes=cally in the USA II. The role of women and monitories changed during WW2 as they demonstrated tremendous value on and off the bahlefield III. Discrimina=on and viola=ons of the U.S. Cons=tu=on became acceptable as the na=on focused on winning the war IV. Most importantly World War II effec=vely ended the Great Depression in the USA as the unemployment rate reached 0% and America was once again prosperous V. Once again the power of the US government grew during war=me leading to more regula=ons for the American public
