With a no later than time to complete the route. Along the route will be a series of events that will assess military skills. Events Events are designed to replicate combat operations as closely as possible. Events will assess multiple military skills. All events are conducted in English. 8 Event FRAGORD Example TASKORG. SANDHURST SQUAD. EVENT #5 - GRENADES 1. Situation. a. Terrain. Upton Road is a major supply route for coalition forces running generally north to south to the east of your current position. There is a covered and concealed position twenty meters to your front. b. Enemy Forces. There is enemy fire team patrolling in the vicinity. The enemy fire team is currently assessed to be located to your front within hand grenade range of the covered and concealed position. c. Friendly Forces. An adjacent squad in your platoon will provide covering fire for your movement to the covered and concealed position to your front. 2. Mission. Sandhurst Squad destroys the enemy fire team commencing time now plus three minutes in order to enable coalition freedom of movement on Upton Road. 3. Execution. You have three minutes to conduct troop leading procedures. In three minutes when your adjacent squad initiates covering fire (replicated), move as quickly as possible (squad leaer determine method either by low crawl, high crawl, or 3-5 second rush) to the covered and concealed position to your front. Once your squad has reached the covered and concealed position your squad must maintain 360 degree security prior to your enagement. It is the job of the squad leader to place his security team and throwers in place prior to reaching the covered and concealed position. Once your squad has reached the covered and concealed position the squad engages all enemy targets with hand grenades.your squad must effectively engage all targets within three minutes of reaching the covered position in order to prevent the enemy from repositioning to the north and causing further disruption of coalition freedom of maneuver. Scoring. Teams will receive points for each time a squad member properly engages the designated targets: a) 15m target= 1 b) 25m target= 3 c) 35m target= 5 Squad receives point for each grenade that detonates within five meters of a target, limited to three hit maximum per enemy target or position (i.e. the 15m target (5 points x3 hits=15 max points)). Grenades that detonate after three minutes of the squad reaching the covered and concealed position will not receive points. Point deductions are as follows: a) improper storage of grenades: 1 points per infraction; b) greater than three second exposure to enemy fire once at the covered and concealed position: 1 points per infraction; c) cooking off a grenade: 3 points per infraction; d) personnel exposed when grenade detonates: - 3 points per infraction. 4.) SUSTAINMENT. a. Squad leader will be issued 9 grenades. Squad leader will use best judgement as it relates to their squad task organization. b. Your element lacks rifle ammunition and is not carrying bayonets on its fighting load. 5.) MISSION COMMAND. a. Event OIC:, MAJOR YO, USMA b. Event NCOIC:, SFC JACKSON, USMA 8

9 Requests for Information What I can tell you: What military skills will be assessed. The doctrine that the military skill is based on. What I cannot tell you: The locations of the events. How the military skills will be assessed. How to train your team. Events are designed to mitigate the disadvantage of lack of familiarity with US Army equipment and techniques. For Example: Question: How will pistol marksmanship be assessed? Answer: It will assess the team s ability to accurately engage multiple targets at various ranges under combat like conditions. NOT Answer: It will be 20 rounds per firer with man sized targets from a standing position at 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, and 25m. Firers will have 30 seconds to engage all targets. RFI Tracker: 9

10 Sandhurst 2018 Awards Gold Standard Patches: Top 10% of the teams Silver Standard Patches: 10-20% of the teams Bronze Standard Patches: 20-30% of the teams Sandhurst Trophy: Best combined Regimental score Reginald E. 11 General Advice In order to successfully prepare, the eleven competitors should be trained equally as all members of the squad could execute an event. All teams should ensure that it s all of its squads members arrive fully fit and uninjured at the start of the competition. Do not specialize the training of individual squad members, the events are designed to assess multiple skills simultaneously. Squad members that are proficient at all the military skills will score better than those who specialize at one or two skills. Focusing on purely on marching/patrolling with weight as fitness training is not recommended. This increases the risk of injuring a squad member closer to the competition. 3-5 periods of moving with weight as close to the competition as possible after a longer period intensive general fitness is more than sufficient to prepare a squad. The fitness training should focus of developing all round body endurance. Training holistically is recommended as the Sandhurst Competition regularly includes a functional fitness event which assess all round fitness, not just moving with weight. When training for movement with weight, train towards a goal. For example a specific pace, with a specific weight and over a specific distance. There is no need to exceed the distance of the competition as this will increase the risk of an injury and is unnecessary to prepare the squad for success. Train how to effectively create sufficient shelter for the entire squad and their equipment. Allowing the team to rest effectively is essential. Often little preparation and thought is given to this by squad and thus they do not maximize the time available to rest and prepare for the next events. 11
