Advantages to a Smaller School Environment MetroWest Elementary 84-E-W-4 Smaller School Advantages

Scheduling With an enrollment of more than 1600, students eat as early at 10:30 and as late as 1:45. With a smaller school of approximately 750 students, the lunch block can be decreased by at least two hours, similar to Keene s Crossing Elementary and Independence Elementary Less lunch shifts allows paraprofessionals more time in classrooms rather than monitoring lunch Computer-based testing will take half the number of days we currently need The potential to have staggered start times and entrances on separate streets will decrease the amount of traffic Smaller School Advantages

Additional Personnel/Space 2 registrars to ensure students start the first day of school 2 guidance counselors 2 media specialists 2 nurses (we currently have between visits to the clinic each month) At least 2 additional paraprofessionals for ESOL (Spanish and Portuguese) Each campus will have their own media center and cafeteria Smaller School Advantages

Smaller Grade Levels School-wide events such as Open House could be scheduled for one night rather than two A smaller grade level would allow us to hold family events such as Honor Roll or Chorus concerts on campus, rather than off-site at Olympia HS Students would be more likely to be in the same class with students from previous years Having two schools allows us to recognize the accomplishments of more students (SOAR award, Disney Dreamer and Doer, spelling bee) Smaller School Advantages

Research supports a smaller school environment The effects poverty has on student achievement is reduced Parent involvement is increased Discipline issues are reduced Fewer students are retained Teacher job satisfaction is increased Teachers build stronger relationships with students Information from Education World Are Smaller Schools Better Schools?
