1 C Missouri Peace Studies Institute, Records, linear feet This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at INTRODUCTION Papers of a Columbia-based organization established in September 1968 to discover ways to implement peace, to promote and encourage peace research and education, and to work with other peace organizations. Functioning as a research facility, the institute gathered data on such topics as amnesty, the post-vietnam era, the arms race, war toys, and war tax resistance. As an institution cooperating with other pacifist groups, it worked with organizations such as the War Resisters, the American Friends Service Committee, and the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors. The Missouri Peace Studies Institute disbanded in December DONOR INFORMATION The Missouri Peace Studies Institute Records were donated to the University of Missouri by Suzy Morse on 21 December 1978 (Accession No. 4205). ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH From 1968 to 1978 the Missouri Peace Studies Institute participated in and initiated many programs involving peace education and research. The group sponsored such speakers as anti-war activist Phillip Berrigan; journalist and discoverer of South Vietnam s tiger cages, Don Luce; chairperson of the War Resisters League, Igal Roodenko; and singer and composer of antiwar and feminist songs, Holly Near. Along with the institute s newsletter, PAX members published papers concerning the use of nuclear weapons and the effect of showing films on Hiroshima to students in Missouri. The Vietnam War became a major issue for the organization. As the United States became more involved in Indochina, the group became more visible. On radio and television they locally sponsored the Unsell the War advertisements a national campaign to end the war. The institute also participated in vigils. After the Paris Peace Treaty was signed on 27 January 1973, the discussion of amnesty for draft evaders and deserters opened. When Gerald Ford announced his clemency plan on 16 September 1974 the issue was debated and the members of the institute voiced their opinions in local press, demonstrations, and petitions. Even though pacifism was the organization s major theme, the institute participated in several events outside this stance. One of these events was a local Planetary Citizenship Campaign. In the early years the institute was a program of the Ecumenical Ministry Board, Columbia, Missouri, but eventually the organizations separated. Staff makeup included an executive director, associated director, research associate(s), and volunteers. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Missouri Peace Studies Institute records are divided into two sections: records of the group and subject files collected by the institute. In the first section materials are arranged by type, with correspondence arranged chronologically; in the second section topics are arranged
