1 ANNOUNCES VACANCY FOR VIOLIN Auditions or violin will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018, beginning at 8:00 a.m., at the Marine Barracks Annex, 7th & L Streets, SE in Washington, D.C. The registration desk will be oen rom 7:15 a.m. until 12:00 noon, but alicants are urged to check in by 8:00 a.m. No seciic audition times will be assigned; musicians will be heard in the order in which they aear and register. I not comleted on March 12, auditions will continue on Tuesday, March 13. Alicants should thereore be available to erorm on both days. Alicants will be laced on the audition list uon the Marine Band s receit o a current résumé and comleted alicant actsheet. These items should be received by the Marine Band beore the day o the audition. The audition committee reserves the right to dismiss any candidate not meeting the highest roessional standards. The President s Own, which includes the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra, is America s oldest continuously active roessional musical organization. Its mission is unique to rovide music or the President o the United States and the Commandant o the Marine Cors. Musicians erorm requently at the White House in small ensembles, chamber orchestra, concert band, and as soloists. The orchestra also erorms or a wide variety o commitments to include ublic concerts, chamber music recitals, military ceremonies, and state unctions. Today s Marine Band is comosed o 154 o the nation s inest musicians. Those selected or the U.S. Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra are exemt rom recruit training and are aointed to the rank o Sta Sergeant (E-6) under a contract or duty with the U.S. Marine Band only. Fettig, Director Marine Barracks Washington 8th & I Streets, SE Washington, DC Oerations: (202) Oice o Communication: (202) Fax: (202) Career Inormation AUDITIONS Auditions or The President s Own occur only in anticiation o rojected vacancies and are announced in The International Musician, as well as by direct mailings to college band directors and instrumental music instructors. All auditions take lace in John Phili Sousa Band Hall at Marine Barracks in Washington, DC, and are conducted much like those o major symhony orchestras. There is no reliminary taed round. Interested alicants should send a letter o inquiry with a current résumé to: Oerations Oicer, U.S. Marine Band, Marine Barracks, 8th and I Streets, SE, Washington, DC , or ax this inormation to (202) Alicants must travel to Washington at their own exense. MUSICAL REQUIREMENTS No seciic level o education is required, but most members hold college degrees, and many hold advanced degrees. The laying ability and exertise required are equivalent to those o any major roessional musical organization. The broad range o commitments by The President s Own requires musical versatility rom all band members. Tyical commitments include band concerts, ceremonial events, chamber orchestra, educational outreach, small ensemble erormances, touring, and recording sessions. QUALIFICATIONS United States citizenshi and successul comletion o an extensive background investigation are mandatory in order to obtain a Secret Security Clearance with Category III White House Access. Alicants holding a dual citizenshi will be required to renounce their oreign citizenshi as a rerequisite to obtaining clearance. This clearance is a requirement or the assignment o the Military Occuational Secialty (MOS) Member, United States Marine Band. Due to the length and scoe o the security clearance rocess, it is initiated ollowing the member s enlistment onto active duty. Failure to obtain and maintain this security clearance will result in administrative searation rom the U.S. Marine Cors. Current regulations authorize enlistment between ages 17 and 28. Age waivers may be granted in some cases; however, the maximum age or which waivers may be granted to those with no rior military service is 34. Alicants must also ass the Armed Services Vocational Atitude Battery (ASVAB) and a comlete hysical examination, which includes comlying with established height/weight standards both at the time o enlistment and throughout one s Marine Cors career (see height/weight chart on the ollowing age). The laying art o the audition assesses only the individual s musical qualiications. To be oered a osition in The President s Own, one must also be hysically qualiied and be caable o being granted the required security clearance. Selection as a inalist is not a determination that one is musically qualiied or the osition. Finalists are those the committee wishes to hear again in order to make a more comlete assessment o their abilities. Finalists are interviewed at the time o the audition in an eort to identiy any otential roblems that could aect the individual s ability to be enlisted or duty with The President s Own, either related to health or the White House security clearance. The Privacy Act notice included as art o the Alicant Fact Sheet exlains that inormation will be requested in the selection rocess and ersonal interview to rovide a basis on which to evaluate the alicant s suitability to hold a osition with The President s Own, and will not be used or any other urose. While disclosure o this inormation is voluntary, ailure to do so could result in the inability o the sta to evaluate the alicant s suitability or a osition in

19 The President s Own and could reclude urther articiation in the audition rocess. Likewise, disclosure o inormation during the interview that is determined to be disqualiying in nature could result in the alicant s immediate dismissal rom the remainder o the audition rocess. The criteria or duty with The President s Own are very stringent and are established by those outside agencies resonsible or granting hysical qualiication and security clearances. The President s Own must comly with the criteria and guidance rovided by these outside agencies in order to assess alicants. While each alicant is dierent, and each will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, the ollowing are some issues that could aect the individual s ability to be ound ully qualiied or enlistment with The President s Own : Physical Qualiications: Disqualiying conditions may include, but are not limited to, ailure to meet height/weight standards at time o enlistment; serious vision and auditory roblems; hyertension; diabetes; heart deects; seizure; inlammatory bowel syndrome; loss o an eye or kidney; cancer within ive years; anorexia; treatment or asthma during the ast ive years; allergy immunotheray during the ast two years; and hysical limitations due to injury or congenital conditions. Laser eye surgery is a otential disqualiier or enlistment. Alicants who have had laser eye surgery should contact LtCol John R. Barclay, Executive Assistant to the Director, at (202) or john.r.barclay@usmc.mil rior to the audition. When doing so, have a coy o your contact lens/eyeglass rescrition rom beore surgery available. Clearance Qualiications: Disqualiying conditions may include but are not limited to: arrest and/or conviction o a elony; requent involvement with authorities even as a juvenile; DWI/DUI; having been a atient in an institution rimarily devoted to the treatment o mental, emotional, or sychological disorders; attern o inancial irresonsibility (bankrutcy, debt or credit roblems, deaulting on a student loan); membershi in any organization that advocates the commission o acts o orce or violence to deny other ersons their rights under the Constitution o the United States; having etitioned to be declared a conscientious objector to war; moving violations with ines over $200; illegal drug use (to include any use o cocaine, heroin, LSD, and PCP); and the illegal urchase, ossession, or sale o any such narcotics. Note: Alicants with questions about their seciic cases should call LtCol John R. Barclay, Executive Assistant to the Director, at (202) or john.r.barclay@usmc.mil rior to the audition. At the comletion o the ersonal interview and health/ security screening, i it is determined that health and/or background issues could aect an individual s ability to be enlisted or duty with The President s Own, such matters will be addressed with the resective agencies resonsible or hysical qualiication or clearance matters. I these agencies conirm that an alicant is unequivocally disqualiied or either hysical or security clearance reasons, the Director reserves the right to eliminate the individual rom urther consideration. Once ound ully qualiied and selected or a osition with The President s Own, alicants receive ull medical and atitude testing at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) nearest their current residence. This testing is coordinated by The President s Own in cooeration with local Marine Cors recruiters. ABOUT THE ENLISTMENT The enlistment rocess is comleted at the alicant s local MEPS. A standard our-year enlistment contract is signed or duty with the U.S. Marine Band only. Marine Band musicians are ermanently assigned and may not be transerred to any other unit or location. Uon enlistment, new members are aointed to the rank o Sta Sergeant (ay grade E-6) in the U.S. Marine Cors and receive all ay and beneits commensurate with that grade. They are also subject to the Uniorm Code o Military Justice, the rules and articles o which govern the disciline o the U.S. Armed Forces. Following enlistment, new members reort directly to Washington, DC, with oicial travel and shiment o household goods conducted at government exense. 20 RECRUIT TRAINING Members o The President s Own are not required to undergo recruit training. The mission o The President s Own is to rovide music and erorm such other unctions as are directed by the President o the United States and the Commandant o the Marine Cors. Unlike other Marine Cors musical units, The President s Own has no secondary combat role, and its members are exemt rom all such training. The President s Own musicians reort to Washington ully trained to erorm their rimary duties in the accomlishment o the band s unique musical mission. Thereore, there is no requirement or The President s Own musicians to undergo recruit training. New members are instructed by the Assistant Drum Major in aroriate military and band-related subjects. This ongoing rocess o instruction gives each musician essential knowledge about his or her role in the U.S. Marine Cors. PAY/ALLOWANCES Military ay is divided into two categories: basic ay (which is taxable) and other allowances (housing, subsistence) which are not taxable. Federal, state, and social security taxes are deducted only rom the income s taxable ortion. In addition, all members o the armed orces are allowed to claim legal residence in their home state i they so desire. This may also aect their state tax status (see chart below or detailed inormation regarding ay and beneits). OTHER PAY INFORMATION Members o the armed services receive ay increases ater the second year o service. These increases continue at the third and ourth year and then are given every two years ater that time u to year 26. In addition, requests or military ay raises are resented to Congress each year. The Basic Allowance or Housing (BAH) is determined by rank. The BAH is recomuted eriodically to ensure that it conorms with actual housing costs. The Washington area has one o the highest BAH rates in the nation. RETIREMENT BENFITS Members o The President s Own, like all other active duty service members, are covered under the military s Blended Retirement System. Armed services members qualiy or retirement at the comletion o 20 years o active service at 40 ercent o their base ay, with an additional 2 ercent each year thereater. This ension beneit requires no contribution rom the individual. The Blended Retirement System also includes articiation in the Thrit Savings Plan (TSP). The TSP is a deined contribution lan that allows members to save or retirement in a taxdeerred, government sonsored retirement lan. The member will be eligible or 1% automatic and u to 4% emloyer matching contributions to their individual account rom their Members o the U.S. Armed Forces are aid on the 1st and 15th o each month. O the total ay and allowances due, only the basic ay is taxable. Monthly deductions on this chart are estimated based uon average deductions o current members. These amounts luctuate based uon seciic state o residence, marital, and deendent status. In addition, members are aid er diem while traveling on government business and are entitled to an annual clothing allowance used to deray the costs o uniorm urchase and maintenance. 21 basic ay. The lan consists o ive dierent investment unds that oer diversiication over a broad range o bond and equity markets. The TSP is governed by the Federal Retirement Thrit Investment Board. Enrollment oortunities are available to all military ersonnel. The rogram is very similar to a civilian 401k or 403b style lan but at a lower administrative cost. NON-MONETARY BENEFITS As active duty members o the military, The President s Own musicians receive all medical and dental care, x-rays, tests, and rescritions without charge. Deendents are also authorized to receive ree medical care at selected military acilities. A contributory lan allows deendent dental care to be covered at a modest cost. Members who retire ater 20 years o service also retain medical beneits through Tricare. The musicians o The President s Own receive ull exchange and commissary rivileges or themselves and their deendents. The Washington, DC, area has a wealth o government and military acilities that are available to active duty members and their amilies. These include swimming ools, tennis and racquetball courts, gymnasiums, and gol courses. Marine Cors Community Service oers rental o caming and athletic equiment, etc. at little or no cost. In addition, there are amle oortunities or recreational, cultural, educational, and historical ursuits throughout the Washington, DC, metroolitan area. LEAVE (VACATION) TIME Marines receive 30 days aid leave each year lus some ederal holidays when not on duty. Secial liberty may also be granted by the Director. All requests or leave are aroved or disaroved based on the band s schedule. The President s Own has no blanket leave eriods during which the entire band is on leave at the same time. To accomlish its mission, it is necessary or the Marine Band to remain oerational 365 days a year. EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE When unds are available, Marine Cors tuition assistance ays u to 100 ercent o tuition, instructional ees, laboratory ees, comuter ees, and mandatory course enrollment ees combined, not to exceed $250 er semester hour equivalent and $4,500 er individual er iscal year. Tuition assistance unds are authorized or vocational-technical, undergraduate, graduate, undergraduate develomental, indeendent study, and distance learning rograms. Courses must be oered by institutions accredited by agencies recognized by the United States Deartment o Education. In addition to tuition assistance, the Veteran s Administration oers educational assistance to all active duty service members in the orm o the GI Bill. Two dierent GI Bill rograms exist: the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill. These rograms oer a range o beneits including the oortunity to transer educational beneits to souses and children. Some rograms require a contribution rom the service member. Inormation regarding the GI Bill and other educational beneits is available rom the Veteran s Administration. There are a number o colleges and universities in the Washington area, including Georgetown University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Catholic University, the University o Maryland, and the Peabody Conservatory o Music. HOUSING Military housing is limited in the Washington area and should not be anticiated. The majority o members live in the Washington metroolitan area, including areas o Maryland and Virginia. BAH is not aid i a member obtains military housing. THE PRESIDENT S OWN HISTORY The President s Own has been art o the events that have shaed our national heritage or more than two centuries. Established by an Act o Congress in 1798, the Marine Band is America s oldest continuously active roessional musical organization. Its mission is unique to rovide music or the President o the United States and the Commandant o the Marine Cors. President John Adams invited the Marine Band to make its White House debut in the uninished Executive Mansion on New Year s Day In March o that year, the band erormed or the inaugural o Thomas Jeerson and research suggests it has erormed or every Presidential inaugural since that time. In Jeerson, the band ound its most visionary advocate. An accomlished musician himsel, Jeerson recognized the unique relationshi between the band and the Chie Executive and he is credited with giving the Marine Band its title, The President s Own. Whether erorming or South Lawn arrival ceremonies, State Dinners, or recetions, Marine Band musicians aear at the White House more than 300 times each year. These erormances range rom a solo harist or chamber orchestra to a dance band or ull concert band, making versatility an imortant requirement or band members. Additionally, the band articiates in more than 500 ublic and oicial erormances annually, including concerts and ceremonies throughout the Washington, DC, metroolitan area. Each all, the band travels through a region o the United States during its concert tour, a century-old tradition started by John Phili Sousa, the band s legendary 17th director. The Marine Band s integral role in the national culture and in the government s oicial lie has airmed the imortance o the arts as a bridge between eole. Since 1798, The President s Own has remained the only musical organization whose mission is to rovide music or the President o the United States and the Commandant o the Marine Cors. The Marine Band continues to celebrate its rich history and tradition while also breaking new ground in the organization s third century o bringing music to the White House and to the American eole.
