I thank you for allowing me to lead the detachment for another year. At the end of April a number of members attended the state convention in Ocean City. A lot of good information came out of the convention. The highlight of the convention for me was the guest speaker at the dinner banquet. BGen Lori Reynolds was the speaker. Gen Reynolds is the Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Eastern Recruiting Region. She is also a native of Baltimore. At the convention two of our members were elected to state positions. Craig Reeling to junior vice commandant and Evie Remines to judge advocate. Charlie Warns and Don Benson were both appointed as aide-de-camp. 15 May was a busy day for our detachment. Three members set up a display at APG for Military Appreciation Week. Eleven members went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda. The Marines Helping Marines Foundation held there monthly cook-out for the wounded warriors. Our detachment was the principle sponsor of the May 15th cook-out. What an uplifting experience it was to be around and talking to our wounded warriors from all the services. Wild Bill Collins has a bus trip going to the Marine Corps Museum on 27 June. Contact him if you want to go on the trip. The ceremonial unit is getting busy. We need all the members of the ceremonial unit to participate in the upcoming events. Practice is every Wednesday evening at 1830 at the VFW. Sr. Vice Commandant Gene Wlock s gallbladder surgery went well and as I write this he is home recuperating. Semper Fidelis, Pete Arnold

3 NEWSLETTER OF THE HARFORD COUNTY DETACHMENT, MARINE CORPS PAGE 3 Jr. Vice Commandant s Page Fellow Marines, I want to thank you for re-electing me as Jr. Vice Commandant for the upcoming year. I am assuming I ve been doing my job well enough to be given another term! If you didn t attend the Department Convention in Ocean City then you may not be aware that I was also elected as Department Judge Advocate. I will be working with Jeff Beavers and all the other Detachment JAs in order to get all Detachment s Bylaws up to date and to assist with any issues that may come up. It is also my goal in the upcoming year to update the Department Bylaws so that they are current with changes implemented with National. This will make our Detachment JA s job easier as they will only have to look at one reference point to ensure the Detachment s Bylaws are current. If you have ever considered running for a Detachment office, I would strongly suggest you start with the JA position. All Officers are required to have a working knowledge of the Bylaws so this is a great starting point for anyone. Per the roster, we ve had nine new members join since I took over as Jr. Vice in That brings our membership strength up to 99 members as of this time. That really isn t a huge growth, considering it isn t even one new member per month. Remember recruiting is the job of all detachment members! Take business cards everywhere you go. If you like to wear USMC hats or shirts, you will inevitably have a Marine come talk to you. Take these opportunities to give them a card and try to get them to attend a meeting. I put cards up on any community bulletin board I see. Wawa, Starbucks, groceries stores anywhere that I see one! I don t know if workers are throwing them away or if Marines are taking them, but the cards are usually gone when I go back. There is a space on each business card in which to write your name so you can get credit for the new member. Detachment Recruiter Ribbon Dave Narango received our Recruiter of the Year award for Great job, Dave! He was responsible for bringing in most of the new Detachment members this past year. Also, if you ever have a Marine use the excuse of not having enough time to join the Detachment; refer them to the Maryland Marines Marine-at-Large Detachment. They can become a member of the MCL and not be obligated to do anything! They will still get the Semper Fi and qualify for the MCL license plates among other things. It gets their foot in the door for when they may have a lifestyle change that gives them more time to participate. Then, it s a simple transfer into a regular Detachment. If you have any ideas for recruiting, you can bring them to me via , a phone call or at the regular Detachment meetings. You may have a great idea that will bring in lots of new members, so don t be shy about sharing! I will give you credit for it, I promise! Hope to see you at the next regular Detachment meeting on 28 May. Semper Fi, Evie Remines

Semper Fidelis, Dick Wischhusen Paymaster Chaplain s Home Marine Ken Phillips continues with his cancer radiation treatments. He say's after each one the effects knocked him on his ass. As of May 10th, our fellow member Marine Stuart Fuld just had biopsies performed on his lung and lymph nodes due to a spot that was discovered during his recent stay in the hospital. So far, things are looking good and all biopsies are coming back negative. He will be having the "Cyber Knife" radiation treatment in the weeks to come.. The Mike Heede Poker Run is on the 13th of July. I will be there and I hope all my dogs take this opportunity to come out and help! Mike Heede is the son of Gloria Crothers. He was KIA and his mother now has an annual 5K Run and the Poker Run in order to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund. This would be a great opportunity for the dogs to get out and help a good cause. I will share the details when I get them. Try, if you can, to make it to the growl at the Mid-East Division Conference on 28 June. These growls are always fun as they are open to all ranks of Devil Dogs and you get to meet DDs from different areas. You can see my Pain-in-the-Ass recipient throw me under a bus again!!! Buckner, aided in suppressing the three-day prison riot at Alcatraz Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay. WO Buckner, a veteran of the Bougainville and Guam campaigns, ably led his force of Marines without suffering a single casualty. 5 May 1983: In Beirut, Lebanon, a UH-1N helicopter carrying the commander of the American peace-keeping force, Colonel James Mead, was hit by machine gun fire. The six Marines aboard escaped injury. Colonel Mead and his crew had taken off in the helicopter to investigate artillery and rocket duels between rival Syrian-backed Druze Moslem militiamen and Christian Phalangists that endangered French members of the multinational force. 8 May 1995: In the wake of the most devastating storm to hit the New Orleans area in more than 200 years, a group of Marines and sailors from Marine Forces Reserve demonstrated the quick response synonymous with the Navy/Marine Corps team. Within 24 hours of being called, Marines assisted in the evacuation of 2,500 civilians, and Navy corpsmen treated scores of flood victims. 10 May 1945: The 22d Marines, 6th Marine Division, executed a pre-dawn attack south across the Asa River Estuary and seized a bridgehead from which to continue the attack toward Naha, the capital of Okinawa. 15 May 1862: Corporal John Mackie, the first Marine to earn the Medal of Honor, was commended for service in the USS GALENA during action against Confederate shore batteries at Drewry's Bluff which blocked the James River approaches to Richmond. 16 May 1945: The 22d and 29th Marines continued the attack against Half Moon Hill, a day characterized by the 6th Marine Division as the "bitterest" of the Okinawa campaign. By the 18th, the famed "Shuri line" had been broached. 23 May 1988: The V-22 Osprey, the world's first production tilt-rotor aircraft, made its debut during rollout ceremonies at Bell Helicopter Textron's Arlington, Texas, facility. More than 1,000 representatives from the military, industry, and media, gathered to hear various speakers, including Gen Alfred Gray, Commandant of the Marine Corps, praise the versatile rotor craft designed to meet the needs of 21st Century battlefields. 26 May 1969: Operation Pipestone Canyon began when the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines and 3d Battalion, 5th Marines began sweeps in the Dodge City/Go Noi areas southwest of Da Nang.
