April 16, 2018 Brea Police Department Hires New Officers to Serve Our Community Last month, at Golden West College, Brea Police Department s three recruits completed and graduated from the Golden West Police Academy, Class #156. The academy is a grueling six month program where the recruits learn about and are tested on how to be a police officer. The recruits were joined with their families and friends as they were sworn in as Brea Police Officers. Congratulations, Officer Condi, Officer Goble, and Officer Wendling, and welcome to the City of Brea and the Brea Police Department. (Pictured above from right to left): Lieutenant Hawley, Corporal Schmaltz, Officer Goble, Officer Condi, Officer Wendling, Lieutenant Hoetker, Corporal Winger and Chief Conklin
Brea Senior Center HVAC Replacement Building Maintenance staff recently replaced the heat pump HVAC unit for the Brea Senior Center kitchen area. Over the past few years, staff has been replacing the 16 year old units as costly components fail. There were cost savings by purchasing the new units directly and installing them inhouse. The Building Maintenance Division hopes to have another unit installed this fiscal year.
Brea Police Department and the Brea Police Association Annual Department Awards Ceremony Earlier this year, the Brea Police Department and the Brea Police Association hosted their Annual Department Awards Ceremony. Various awards were presented to the men and women of the Police Department, and volunteers and employees from other City departments whose hard work and dedication are exhibited daily. The awards and award recipients for 2017 were: Officer of the Year Officer C. Winger Investigator of the Year Detective D. Aguirre Volunteers of the Year C. Hamano and L. 4 Spring Craft Boutique The Spring Craft Boutique was a two-day event this year, held on March 16 and 17 at the Brea Community Center. There were over 2,400 customers and community members who shopped at the 20th Annual City of Brea Spring Craft Boutique. The boutique featured 231 vendors selling unique oneof-a-kind seasonal and year round gifts and décor, wearable art, jewelry, florals, baby items, tasty goodies and much more. The community was very pleased to be able to shop and see 25 more vendors than the previous year. This is a really fun event where the community is able to shop local, sample, and purchase unique items from small business owners. Community Services would like to thank Public Works, the Print Shop, and Communications & Marketing staff for all their hard work and assistance with the boutique.
Brea Olinda High School Presents the Every 15 Minutes Program Every two years, Brea Olinda High School (BOHS), presents the Every 15 Minutes Program to its junior and senior students. This program offers a real-life experience without the real-life risks. This emotionally charged program is an event designed to dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol or texting while driving. This powerful program challenges students to think about drinking, texting while driving, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved. We are proud to congratulate School Resource, Officer Shannon Buckles, on a successful event at BOHS where our local students gained knowledge and understanding of the devastation and havoc that can result from distracted driving. This event wouldn t be possible without the help of our sponsors: B.J. s Pizza & Brewery Restaurant, Brea Fire Department, Brea Lions Club, Brea Rotary Club, Brea Towing, Brea School Board Members, Bill Hall and Carrie Flanders, California Highway Patrol, Chick-Fil- A, Edison High School Principal Jennifer Graves, Emergency Ambulance, Home Depot, Jeff Hyland Video Production Services, Knott s Berry Farm, Memory Garden Memorial Park and Mortuary, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Orange County Coroner s Office, Placentia-Linda Hospital, Rollino s Family Subway.
Parks Playground Rubber Surfacing Replacement Over the next month, the Public Works Department will have a contractor remove and replace the rubber playground surfacing at ten parks, including the Sports Park. The existing rubber surfacing is over ten years old, and over time starts to harden and tear due to use and sunlight. The new rubber surfacing will improve the user s play experience. During the installation, the playgrounds will be fenced off until the new surfacing has dried and can re-open. The playgrounds have been scheduled in different groupings, so not all are closed at the same time. Also, signs have been put up advising users which other park playgrounds are open for use during each closure.
