2 Commandant Paul Hinojosa Hello Marines, FMF Corpsmen & Chaplains, associate members and families. I would like to thank everyone for a fabulous turnout for the January detachment meeting. We had 42 in attendance with 30 members who enjoyed our breakfast. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our cooks, they have done a tremendous job for us these past few months. Sounds like Sarges Grill is planning on opening up real soon, last word I got, they will either open up by February 5, they have heads up that we want to have our next meeting at their new site on 5855 Palmer Park and they are excited to have us. Please, please stay tuned and watch out for our updates from our webmaster as to where our February meeting will take place. Most likely Sarges Grill so bring your check book. We have a busy year ahead of us with numerous opportunities for volunteers to come out and help us at each event and fundraiser. Please keep an eye on our Jr. Vice newsletters and announcements as the events come up. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with us this year, last year s sales were pretty slim due to snow and rain, plus a total eclipse. Please take note from our Chaplain, as the year starts, we have several members sick or in distress. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. And know, that we are all here for each other, we will help each other as needed, we don t have to go thru these events alone. I look forward to seeing you all in our next meeting, hopefully at Sarges Grill, so take care of yourselves, stay healthy, and I will see you on Feb. 17 at Semper Fi, Paul Senior Vice Commandant Terry Crum Greetings, I hope that 2018 is finding everyone well. Like Commandant Paul Hinojosa, I also am looking forward to having the meeting at the new Sarges Grill. The food is good. The prices are reasonable. All veterans rate 10% off their bill. Veterans of Vietnam and the Korean War get 50% off and the heroes of WWII eat free. What a deal! Gold Star parents also eat for free. I spoke to one of the employees today, verified the discounts and that the expected opening date at 5855 Palmer park is expected on 5 February. If the new place is as nice as the original location in Fountain, it should be outstanding. The 2018 Pikes Peak Detachment scholarship committee is now in business, applications are welcome. I would like to thank the following people for volunteering to be on the committee: Roger Baty, Denise Wickersheim, Steve Schwartz, Iris Rudesill, Terry Farstad, and Theresa Crum. Last year s scholarship committee s hardest working member was Peggy Baldwin. She will not be on this year s committee but will be available as an advisor. The scholarship procedures/application is available on the Pikes Peak Det. home page: That Web Sgt. is outstanding!!! While you are visiting the Pikes Peak Det. home page, you will see a link for the new Detachment picture archive. Currently the archive contains over 3,900 pictures. Starting in 2003 and up to the present. For the old timers in the detachment, it will be a trip down memory lane. A reminder of old friends. For the newer members it is a history lesson in images. The picture archive will be updated as time go on. On a closing note, please notice that this newsletter includes the recent obituaries for our brother and sister Marines. This will help our of our members stay informed on this news of our Detachment. Semper Fi, Terry Stay in touch with Marines, join the M.C.L. Pictures from the January Detachment meeting. This is my first newsletter as your Chaplain and I hope this reaches everyone in great or improving health. On the 20th of January Antonio "Bear" Barrera unexpectedly lost his mother. His mom, Prescilla, was the Commander of the DAV Chapter Knob Hill and V.F.W. Her service was on January 31st at Holy Apostles Catholic Church. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bear during this very difficult time for him and his family. Hank Hankins was recently hospitalized for some abdominal problems. He went though an emergency surgery to straight his intestines. We have heard from Joe G. Martinez that Hank is currently not doing very well. He had to go back into surgery due to more abdominal problems. The surgeons did not close the wound for medical reasons. Hank is in the ICU at Memorial Hospital on Boulder. Only family members are allowed to see him at this time. If I do gain permission to visit, I will forward any news out to the League. Hank and his family needs your prayers sent their way. Joe V. Martinez is back at work. His knee problem is better but, he will see an orthopedic doctor soon. He is also waiting for the go ahead to get an MRI for a suspected liver problem. Please read the obituaries posted later in this newsletter. The bereavement team will attend the service for Marine Parrish Cox. Services will be at The Springs Funeral Services E Platte Ave, Colorado Springs, CO Visitation, Feb. noon to 1 p.m., Service, Feb. 1 p.m. I appreciate everyone's support as I grow and learn in this role. Please let me know if you need any assistance from me. The best way to reach me is on my cell phone, but you will need to leave a message as I am normally in meetings from As noted during our meeting in January, our Bereavement team is down to 12 members and if anyone is interested in joining the team, I would greatly appreciate it. Semper Fi, Jamie Quartermaster Russ Miller Just a quick note regarding coffee mugs for $15. Sarge said he will put up a shelf for us to keep them at Sarges Grill for our meetings. Dept. of Colorado; contribution of $100 to the following, Dept. of Colorado Scholarship fund, National Marines helping Marines fund, and Marine Corps Memorial in Golden Colorado. As you may recall in Novembers meeting, Roger Baty brought to the floor the Colorado Marines night with the Denver Nuggets, a program where Nuggets host the future marines of recruiting station Denver on February 1 against Oklahoma City. During the pre-game, these young men and women will take the court and participate in a swear in ceremony and recite the oath of enlistment. The Baty family have donated to the detachment $750.00; sponsoring 50 future and current Marines and we received 4 personals lower or club level seats for the OKC game. I ve decided to raffle off two tickets for detachment members (two detachment members or 1 detachment member and partner), and raffle off the other two staff (two staff members or one staff member and partner). The raffle tickets will be $2.00 dollars each with the promise that whomever wins makes every attempt to show at the game and represent our detachment. This will not take the place of 50/50, both will run congruently. The proceeds will go towards one of the detachments programs, such as scholarship, marines helping marines, or our current CD. Skysox; In December, I mentioned that they are requesting us as Color guard for an event/game. I contacted Jon Basil for more details, in addition to the color guard, for $180 dollars they will provide us 20 tickets to attend the game. We can do basically anything we want to the tickets. If the detachment pays $ for 20 tickets, do we have enough interest to have 20 members, family and friends to attend the game? The response was in favor. The dates available are: April 13 or 14 Round rock express rangers April 27 or 28 Omaha Storm chasers June 2 Iowa Cubs July 6 or 7 New Orleans Baby cakes July 27 or 28 Alb. Isotopes 2018 Dept. State Filling and 990N; State filing has been completed as of January 17, N in progress. PCS Chariot OA; A Non-profit organization in Colorado dedicated to providing outdoor adventures for veterans. This started out as a means to take physically challenged or mobility impaired veterans out to hunt and enjoy the outdoors. Hearing this second hand, sounds like the invite is being extended to all veterans? Contact Guy or visit his Per Juan Lopez at Colorado Springs VA Clinic, liaison for homeless vets, they have pheasant and water fowl tags available at no cost. All equipment supplied by the organization, with exception of small games license (required, vet must purchase per normal channels). Sr. Vice/ Web Sgt.; Terry Crum A photograph collection of many images going back as far as 2003 of the Pikes Peak Detachment is being placed on the internet. A link will be on the Detachment web site soon. Approximately 3,000 pictures so far. Thank you Roger Baty for taking most of them and setting the bar so high! Pikes Peak Det. 6 The color guard did an outstanding job last year. New members always welcome. The uniform varies from dress blues to the old school camouflage utility uniform (cammies). Jr. Vice; Pat Carty Gunny Gibson asked to pass along a big thanks to Bev who baked 25 loaves of bread to make the French Toast this morning. Next event is the St Patrick s Day parade (see quarter master s notes) Adjutant; Carmella Miller: NSTR Judge Advocate; Gary George: NSTR Jr. Past Commandant; Russ Miller Russ received from the WWII Luncheon the brochure What to do When a Veteran Passes, which contains the form for reserving a space at Veteran cemetery. The Springs cemetery is scheduled to open next year. If you would like a copy, please contact Russ. A discussion followed: - The spouse must also fill out the form to be buried with the veteran. - Ft Logan will exhume (wrong word) veterans currently awaiting the new cemetery free of charge, however the cost of transportation to CS is the family s responsibility. The CS cemetery will provide a random plot unless the veteran/family donated a tree in which they will look for an available plot close to the tree donated. - Russ suggested if anyone has questions to contact: David Donahue at Mt Carmel Veterans Centers, or Carl McDaniel at the El Paso County Veterans Service Center office near Costco (these gentlemen can also help with VA claims). Russ then suggested that Chris Donahue, a detachment member who is a funeral director at Springs Funeral Home give a talk as a guest speaker on basic veteran burial planning. Many heads nodded in agreement. Chaplain; Jamie Rogers - The bereavement team is down to 12 members and I'm looking for more participants. Red MCL jacket requested but not required; traditional funeral attire (black suit/dress etc) is fine. Please no MCL vests - Do you know if anyone has heard from Joe V. Martinez? He is scheduled for an MRI this week Quartermaster; Russ Miller Check out the Ship s Store. We now have high quality embroidered outdoor flags. New Coffee Mugs for sale.
