7 What We Do For You: Family Assistance Centers (FACs) are activated as multi-disciplinary humanitarian response to major events. The events can include natural/man-made disasters, or preparation for a deployment. Depending upon the location, FACs are staffed with contracted personnel, Family Assistance Specialists (FASs), may be augmented with military, temporary technicians or volunteers. A FAC offers persons affected by an event, a single place to receive reliable information, crisis or grief support, and benefits information. The National Guard is the lead agency tasked to establish FACs during all levels of contingency, mobilization and emergency to assist and support Service Members and Families of all service branches. Each FAS is intended to simplify the process of accessing needed services and support for families of Service Members called to active duty for an extended period of time. The primary mission of a FAS, which includes assistance regardless of deployment status as well as monthly proactive contact to each Family during deployment, is to inform and emotionally support families so Service Members can perform their mission. The FAS listens when Family members need to be heard. They provide guidance and advice when Family members ask for direction. When a problem requires professional help, the Specialist provides information and resources and then follows up to ensure needs have been met. 8 Family Readiness Support Assistants MISSION: The mission of the Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA) is to maintain the continuity and stability of Family Readiness Groups (FRGs) as units undergo changes in volunteers and leadership. Operationally, the FRSA provides administrative and logistical support to commanders and volunteer FRG leaders. FRSA take the administrative burden off the volunteers, which allow FRG leaders to reach out to Soldiers and their Families in the command. This preserves stability on the home front, especially during periods of deployment. FRSA will provide Family Support Services through synchronization with the Command leadership at the brigade, battalion, or company by preparing newsletters, flyers, telephone rosters, lists and reports in support of their assigned units and the State Family Programs Office. FRSA will also establish and maintain the unit s Virtual Family Readiness Group (VFRG) website. This website will include calendars with upcoming events and activities for your unit. Opportunities for webinars and educational events may also be posted to your VFRG site. Your units VFRG will be specific to your unit, contact your regional FRG for more details. Training Services: The Family Readiness Support Services Trainer (FRSST) is responsible for providing specific training to Command Leadership Teams and Family Readiness Groups. The overall goal of our FRSA Team is to increase Family well-being and resiliency. The FRSST can provide classes and concepts from the Master Resiliency Training, What Family Programs offers, roles of individuals within the Family Programs, how Family Programs can assist and support the Service Members and their Families, team building exercises, communication classes, sustainment classes, benefits of community partners, and resources available through community partners. 17 Mobilization Event The Yellow Ribbon Mobilization Event is held approximately 30 days prior to mobilization to help prepare and address common challenges associated with deployment for both the Service Member and their Family. Deployment Event The Deployment Event is conducted 30 days prior to the Service Members re turn from deployment and focuses on the Family Members and helping their Service Member reintegrate into a normal civilian routine. Programs focus on providing Service Members and their Families access to resources and licensed professionals to help support the reintegration process. Tier I The Tier I event is held approximately 30 days after the Service Member re turns from deployment. This event stresses the importance of taking advantage of both Military and community resources. Service members receive briefings on the VA, TRICARE, and Transition Assistance as well as information on various other government and community resources. Tier II The Tier II Event is held approximately 60 days after the Service Member returns from deployment. Separation from a parent is stressful on our children. Although a child s reactions will vary with their personalities, ages, and coping skills, changes as dramatic as deployments will normally be puzzling to any child. The Yellow Ribbon Child s Reintegration Program offers creative communication tools which will ease the transition between deployment and homecoming for Illinois National Guard Families through our statewide youth programs. The Creative Arts Therapiesmusic, art and drama, serve as the delivery system to children during workshop events. Programming is designed to encourage expressive, enjoyable interaction among members of Guard Families, offering a base upon which newly reunited Families may build

19 Warrior to Warrior Program (W2W) Mission: Provide training and resources to Illinois National Guard Service Members to enhance peer support and resilience and to facilitate access to system of care. Goal: The W2W Volunteer Veteran program was developed from a program created by the University of Michigan, to meet the unique needs and challenges faced by Citizen- Soldiers and their families. These Soldiers prepare for deployment on a part-time basis while still meeting their obligations to Family and community. Those returning from deployment find themselves separated from the friendship and support of fellow Service Members. In many cases, their home communities may lack the services and resources to address the issues faced by these military Service Members. The Volunteer Veteran is trained to help fill the gap by lending support and helping fellow Service Members connect with the resources they need to address their specific needs. The program was designed specifically for Service Members from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Although launched as a National Guard initiative, the target audience of the W2W program will expand to respond to the needs of reserves of every branch of the military as well as separated active duty Service Members. The Warrior to Warrior Volunteer Veteran program is part of the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program. It is also funded in part by the McCormick Foundation, to raise public awareness about the issues facing today s veterans and their families, and to raise funds to support programs and services that military members throughout the deployment cycle need to repair and restore their lives.

20 Resiliency Program Master Resilience Training: The Army established Master Resilience Trainers (MRT) to increase the resilience and enhance the performance of Soldiers, Families, and Department of the Army Civilians (DACs). Resilience is the mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, and adapt to change, recover, learn, and grow from setbacks. A resilient and fit individual can better leverage intellectual and emotional skills and behaviors that promote enhance performance and optimize their long-term health. Purpose of the performance enhancement training is to develop the full potential of Soldiers, Families, and DACs using a systematic process that expands the mental skills essential to the pursuit of personal strength, professional excellence, and the Warrior Ethos. Goal: The goal of MRT is to increase resilience and performance enhancement skills by building on the following Five Dimensions of Strength: Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Family. Re sil ience 1. The power or ability to return to the original form, position, etc., after being bent, compressed, or stretched; elasticity. 2. Ability to recover readily from illness, depression, adversity, or the like; buoyancy. 26 RESOURCES The Mission of the ILNG Full-Time Support Chaplains CH (COL) Steve Cooper Command Staff Chaplain Chaplains serve both God and country by bringing their unique gifts with which they are endowed to God, to the Soldiers of our nation in the broad, challenging, diverse, and ever-changing environment in the military. Chaplains are our nation s service members who minister to our nation s sons and daughters, and their families. Like any Service Member, they must endure hardships, separations, and deprivations of those whom they serve. They must provide dynamic and genuine ministry with a shepherd s heart. 27 RESOURCES Strong Bond s Mission: The program s mission is to build Soldier readiness by providing skills the Soldier can use to strengthen his or her marriage and other relationships. Strong Bonds for Singles: About 50 percent of the Army s Soldiers are single and most will get married while on active duty. If you re a single Soldier, you may also be far from home, lonely, and faced with the uncertainty of imminent deployment. These pressures can lead to hasty decision-making when choosing a life partner. Strong Bonds for Couples: Whether you ve celebrated one anniversary or twenty, as an Army couple you can anticipate more excitement and expect more challenges than the average civilian couple. Long separations, frequent relocations, and the stress of deployment can subject Army marriages to extreme hardship. For more info call Chaplain (CPT) Vincent Lambert at Visit
