The event lauds the legacy of African American legislators and acknowledges our efforts to preserve African American legislative history. The evening also serves as a fundraiser for the Avoice Virtual Library Project featuring the Avoice: African-American Voices in Congress ( Avoice: African-American Voices in Congress, is an online repository that captures the legislative and political achievements of African Americans in Congress, and provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals like you, who make humanitarian contributions to our society. CBCF s Heritage theme is Black Veterans on the Front Line of History, and the event will pay homage to leaders and elected officials who have served in the military or have demonstrated support and commitment to advancing the rights and benefits of black veterans. Whether dating back to the Civil War, where African Americans led the first all-black regiment known as the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry the 1.2 million black men that enlisted in WWII or fighting today s continued struggle for veterans benefits, African American military veterans have always answered the clarion call to serve their country when the country did not guarantee freedom and equality for them. The Avoice Heritage Celebration will honor the unwavering patriotic resilience, commitment and sacrifices of African Americans to the values of freedom, democracy, and justice from the battlefield to the halls of Congress.
