4 Marine and Family The Marine Corps is unique from the other services with more active duty personnel than family members. 7 Of the four military Services, the Marine Corps has the lowest percentage of married personnel. 3 From 2000 to 2011, the marital rate for the Marine Corps steadily increased until it peaked at 48.9%. The marital rate for the Marine Corps has decreased by 6.4% since [6]

8 Marine and Family Of the Marines who were divorced in FY 2016, the overall average age was 29 (average age for Marine Officers is 36 and Enlisted Marines is 28). About 91% of all Marines, who were divorced this year, were enlisted and about half of those Marines were NCOs ( 14% Pvt LCpl; 51% NCOs; 26% SNCOs; 9% Officer). 3 In FY 2016, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment history was 1.9% compared to 2.2% for Marines with no deployment history. 10 Marine and Family The Marine Corps has 8,178 Dual Military [9] Families. 1

11 3,934 single Marines have 5,786 dependent children (2.1% of all Marines). 1 The average Marine family has 1.13 children. 1 For purposes of this report, the Marine family is defined as married Marines with a child, married Marines without a child, and single Marines with a dependent child. The largest age group of children as categorized below is the School-Age group (defined as 5 to 12 years) with 40,178 children. Of all Marine Corps children, 48% are 5 years of age or younger, compared to approximately 41% for the other Services. 3 Age Group Classifications Infants: 0 to 12 months Pre-toddlers: 13 to 24 months Toddlers: 25 to 36 months Preschool: 3 & 4 year-olds School-Age: 5 to 12 year-olds Teen: 13 to 18 year-olds Young Adult: 19 year-olds [10]

12 Marine and Family There was an increase in the number of children of Marines across most age groups from 2007 to 2011, with the sharpest increases occurring in the infant and school-age groups. Since 2011, the number of children has been decreasing across all age groups. 3 The general increase in the number of children from 2008 to 2011 coincided with the increase in the size of the total force. In 2016, there was an average of 0.53 children per Marine, and in 2011 there were 0.63 children for each Marine, which is the highest ratio in last thirteen years. 3 Since 2011, the Marine Corps total size decreased by almost 9%, while the number of children decreased by 20%. 1 [11]

13 There are 8,523 Marines enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) with 10,749 exceptional family members. 4 From 2007 to 2013, EFMP enrollment increased consistently in spite of an overall reduction in the force. Since 2013, EFMP enrollment remained fairly stable though the overall number of children of Marines decreased. Many Exceptional Family Members (EFMs) have more than one condition. Premature birth, Cerebral Palsy, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Intellectual Deficiency, and Cystic Fibrosis make up a combined 2.9% of all conditions. 4 [12]

San Diego and Henderson Hall are the only other installations with more than 10% of their total dependents enrolled in EFMP. 16 Age The average age of a married Enlisted Marine is 27.8, lower than the other military Services. 1 Of the four Services, the Marine Corps has the youngest average age for spouses, [15]

17 The Marine Corps is overall the youngest of the four services overall, has the youngest spouses, and have their first child at a younger age on average. 3 66% of the overall Marine population is age 25 or younger (120,996); 25% (45,904) of Marines are not old enough to legally consume alcohol and 14% (25,645) are teenagers. 1 [16]

18 Service Trends The end strength of the active duty Marine Corps steadily increased from 2001 to 2009 (from 172,735 to 204,846, an 18.6% increase). Since 2009, the end strength of the active duty Marine Corps decreased by 10.4% (from 204,846 to 183,647). Over the same time period, the Army decreased by 15.7%, the Navy decreased by 2.3%, and the Air Force decreased by 5.0%. 1 The Marine Corps also has the highest percentage of personnel at rank E-3 or below and the highest percentage, as compared to the other services. 1 [17]

19 The Marine Corps has the highest ratio of Enlisted to Officer Service Members than any of the four military Services. 3 The Marine Corps is the smallest of any of the four military Services. 3 The Marine Corps also has the highest percentage of personnel married at rank E-3 or below, and a slightly higher percentage that are married as compared to the other services. 1 [18]

20 Service Trends 5.1 years On average, the total Active Duty force has served 5.1 years, and 59% of the total Active Duty force has served less than 4 years. 1 [19]

25 The percentage of Enlisted Marines separating after their first term was highest in 2010 at 82.3% and decreased until FY 2016 when there was an increase. The percentage of Officers separating within five years of service was also highest in 2010 at 27%, and declined each year since. 1 [24]

27 Minority representation within the Marine Corps compared to The percentages of ethnic minorities are: Hispanic: 17.4% of the Marine Corps (9% in 1995) Black and African American: 10.4% of the Marine Corps (16% in 1995) American Indian, Alaskan Native, Asian, Pacific Islander, Other, Declined to Respond: 8.3% of the Marine Corps (4% in 1995) Of the known education profiles, nearly 100% of Marines hold a minimum of a High School degree or equivalent. 89% of Marine Officers and 3% of Enlisted Marines hold Bachelor s Degrees, Master s Degrees, or Doctorates.
