2 Purpose This lesson provides an overview of the various Marine Corps uniforms from colonial times to today.

3 1. Be familiar with the history of the Marine Corps uniforms. 2. Be able to describe the different Marine uniforms. 3. Be able to identify and name the different types of Marine uniforms.

4 The word uniform comes from two Latin words unus and forma which means one form. From the earliest times soldiers in battle have needed a way to distinguish friend from foe.

5 The development of uniforms eliminated the problem with distinguishing opposing armies. It also identified ranks and arms in each army.

6 In 1775, Continental Marines wore green coats with red facing, white waistcoats, white breeches, short black spats, and round felt hats. Early Marines wore a leather neckpiece from which we get the name leatherneck.

7 Chevrons (stripes) as a sign of rank were introduced in In 1798, the traditional Marine Corps colors of blue, white, and scarlet were restored.

8 Service Uniforms

9 In 1917 during World War I, the Marines in France wore olive drab uniforms and later adopted the color as its service dress.

10 Utility uniforms designed for field duty were first used in combat during World War II.

11 Presently Marine Corps uniforms are divided into three categories: dress, service, and utility.

16 The dress uniform is for parades, ceremonies, reviews, and official social occasions. There are six categories of dress uniforms: Blue Dress A Blue Dress B Blue Dress C Blue Dress D Blue-White Dress A Blue-White Dress B

18 Worn or carried with dress uniform General rule: If dress cover is on the head then the white gloves are worn.

30 For routine office activities, Marines wear service uniforms that are olive drab in color. There are three forms of service uniforms, designated A, B, and C.

31 Olive Drab Coat & necktie with ribbons and badges. Worn when civilians are going to wear business suits.

32 Long sleeve shirt with tie or neck tab with olive drab pants or skirt. Can be worn with the green sweater.
