3 Snapshot The Marine Corps is the youngest, most junior, and least married of the four military Services. 62% of Marines are 25 or younger 21% of Marines are not old enough to legally consume alcohol 39% of Marines are LCpl or below (other Services are between 19% - 24%) 48.9% of Marines are married (next closest is Navy at 53.9%) One Officer per 8.1 Marines (next closest is Navy with one Officer per 5.0 Sailors) Marine Corps families are younger than those of the other military Services. 4 Marine and Family Status The Marine Corps has slightly fewer active duty personnel than family members. There are 200,225 active duty Marines and 207,671 family members: 90,029 spouses, 117,362 children, and 280 parents (TFDW Dec 2011). This close relationship, 49:51, is unique among the military Services. The active duty to family member ratios of the Army, Navy, and Air Force are all approximately 40% Service members to 60% family members (Data source: DMDC Dec 2011). 6 Marine and Family Status The overall annual divorce rate for the Marine Corps was 3.6% for FY2011. When examining the divorce rate for female Marines, the rate has had an increasing trend since 2006 at 7.2% to the present of 9.5%, an increase of 2.3%. 4.5 Overall Divorce Rates Data Source: DMDC FY2000- FY Marine Corps Army Navy Air Force Divorce Rates Data Source: DMDC FY FY Marine Corps Army Navy Air Force For the Marines who were divorced in FY2011, the overall average age was 28 (Broken down: 35 for Officers and 27 for Enlisted). 93% of divorced Marines were from the enlisted ranks (Pvt LCpl 17%; NCOs 52%; SNCOs 24%) (Data Source: DMDC FY 2011). In FY2011, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment history was 3.6%, compared to 3.7% for Marines with no deployment history. Since FY2004, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment history has not been significantly different than the divorce rate for Marines with no deployment history (Data Source: DMDC FY 2011). There was an average of 1.2 children involved in each divorce during FY2011 (Data Source: DMDC FY 2011). 5

7 Marine and Family Status 6,163 single Marines have 8,925 dependent children (3.1% of all Marines) (Data source: TFDW Dec 2011). The Marine Corps has 8167 dual military families (TFDW Dec 2011). The average Marine family has 1.13 children (Data source: TFDW Dec 2011). For purposes of this fact sheet, the Marine family is defined as the number of married Marines with a child, the number of married Marines without a child, and the number of single Marines with a dependent child. The largest age group of children as categorized below is the School- group (defined as 6 to 12 years) with 40,056 children. 52% of Marine Corps children are 5 years of age or younger, compared to approximately 42% for the other Services. 9 Service Trends The end strength of the active duty Marine Corps has increased since 2001 by 15.91% (from 172,735 to 200,225). Of the remaining three military Services, the Army has experienced an increase of 16.44%, while a decrease was experienced by the Navy of 14.44% and the Air Force of 5.76%. (Data source: DMDC Dec 2011, TFDW Dec 2011). The Marine Corps is easily the most junior of all the military Services. The Marine Corps has the highest percentage of members who hold the rank of Private, Private First Class, or Lance Corporal (39%) (Data source: TFDW Dec 2011). 11 Service Trends By the end of Dec 2011, 73,645 Marines had deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Marines who were deployed had 68,094 dependent family members (Data Source: TFDW Dec 2011). 21 Other Reserve Categories There are 3,049 Other Reservists (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). These Other Reservists are comprised of all Enlisted personnel, rank LCpl and below (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). The average age of these Other Reservists is 21 (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). Other Reservists have 144 family members (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). As of Dec 2011, only 3% of the Other Reservists are married (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). 99% of the Other Reservists hold at a minimum High School Degree or equivalent (Data Source: ODSE Dec 2011). 20
