1 South Carolina State University s Bulldog Battalion Newsletter Orangeburg, South Carolina Monday, October 17, 2016 The Commander s Challenge On the weekend of September 30th, the Bulldog Battalion embarked on their first field training exercise of the school year at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Junior level Cadets (MS-3) received their initial glimpse into conducting an ambush and a raid with squad sized elements, as well as practicing their land navigation skills. The goal of the FTX was simulate the stressful conditions of Advanced Camp in order to strengthen Cadet Leadership success in the future. Cadets were given an operations order Ufound hereu, weeks before the event to prepare themselves. Sophomore and Freshman level Cadets (MS-2 and MS-1) attended hands on classes ranging from how to throw a grenade, with Master Sergeant Garrett, to patrol base operations. 2 Let s Get Ready For Some Football! South Carolina State University home football games bring new life to Orangeburg, SC. What an average fan or student in attendance will expect is a fun, exciting, football experience. Although, the football game wouldn t nearly run as smooth as it appears without the ROTC Bulldog Battalion. Our determined Cadets are at Oliver C. Dawson hours before the game starts and hours after it s over. Cadets in all MS levels work tirelessly through Saturday afternoons to make sure the mission gets accomplished; ensuring the ROTC Bulldog Battalion works each detail effectively, to make certain the football game is run successfully. Details that our Battalion control include, parking detail, tailgate detail, net detail, usher detail, food detail, color guard and more. Each Cadet works a detail and plays a huge part in South Carolina State University s football games. 3BThe Commander s Challenge Continued The MS3s were the main effort of our Battalion FTX on Sept. 29- Oct. 01. They were tasked to lead squad level missions, learn and execute land navigation techniques, as well as better help develop 1s and 2s on field craft and leadership. As training led on they became very motivated along with the rise of team cohesion to complete applied tasks. We are looking to further develop MS3s on patrol base operations, squad level missions, and critical thinking. Moving into the spring semester we intend to advance their knowledge on how to execute actions on objectives, platoon level missions, and be resilient to changing mission status. Santez Tucker MS-3 Commander Not only were there over ninety Cadets that spent their weekend at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, but 55 Cadets were MS 1s & 2s that came ready to learn. The young Cadets were heavily engaged in everything that was tasked. They had classes on first aid, how to set up a patrol base & how to occupy one, ranks, grenade course, movement formations, Buddy team rush & conducting an AAR. Some of the things the Cadets will be pushed on learning will be discipline, land navigation & more hands on training. We were proud and pleased with the turnout we had at the field. It's great that the Cadets are hungry for more knowledge, and it excites us that they want more because we got more to bring".ms 1 & 2 Commander Ian Phifer & Executive Officer Aaliyah Blanding 4BCadets and Cadre Participate Dr. Ronald E. McNair Memorial 5K Run The 12th Annual Ronald McNair 5K Run was held on October 15th in Lake City, SC. The 5K is named after the late Ronald McNair, a native of South Carolina, who was one of the astronauts killed on the Space Shuttle Challenger in He graduated from Carver High School, Lake City, South Carolina, in 1967 and later went on to received a B.S. in Physics from North Carolina A&T State University in A few Cadets and cadre member signed up to participate even after the brief interruption of Hurricane Matthew. There were 13 possible award groups and our team stacked up well. Congratulations to: LTC Peterson came in 1st place in the age group CPT Wilson came in 2nd in the age group MAJ Nelms came in 2nd in the age group Cadet Brandon Johnson came in 2nd in the males age group Cadet Christopher Anderson came in 4th in the males age group Cadet Jalen Ayers came in 5th in the males age group Cadet Connie Sherow came in 1st in the female age group Cadet Michael Stackhouse III came in 1st place Overall Males 1

3 Ranger Challenge Each year at the beginning of the fall semester, a group of 12 Cadets are brought together to form a dynamic group to create South Carolina State University s Ranger Challenge team. The annual Ranger Challenge competition is held at Ft. Pickett, Virginia, where each College or University from the 4 th Brigade sends their team of 12 Cadets to compete. The 24 hour competitive event includes a day of physical, tactical, and technical tasks. At the end of the Ranger Challenge competition, the first, second and third place teams are awarded trophies. Separate banners are also awarded for the teams doing best in certain events. South Carolina State University Ranger Challenge team seems promising this year with returning Cadets; Christopher Anderson, Jennifer Jeffcoat, and Jordan Beagle. The rest of the team consists of highly motivated, never quit attitude Cadets who are; Trevon Andrews, Jarquis Brown, Tyjae Burch, Michael Hathaway, Zachary Mack, Brandi McCoy, Ra Mecca RaSun, Eric Toney, Santez Tucker, and Tameka Watts and Nicolas Williams. These 14 Cadets will travel to Ft. Pickett, VA on Oct. 20 and sacrifice their homecoming weekend to bring back home Ranger Challenge Gold. 2
