With the bsence of n Auxiliry Oiler Relenishment (AOR) ltform in the Pcific Fleet since the de-commissioning of HMCS Protecteur in 2015, mny junior silors hve not hd the oortunity to oerte with tnker, let lone on bord one. In rertion for the rrivl of Cnd s own AOR, MV Asterix, in 2018, this timely oortunity to trin RCN silors on bord Almirnte Montt roved very beneficil. he Montt trvelled from its home nvl bse in Vlriso, Chile, to meet the Cndin silors in Perl Hrbour, Hwii, in mid-july. he Montt then roceeded west to rendezvous with HMCS Ottw nd HMCS Winnieg, who were on their journey home to Esquimlt fter five-month deloyment on Poseidon Cutlss. Once the three shis met, the RAS force genertion trining ws in full swing, crrying out multitude of exercises rnging from liquid relenishment t se (fuelling), hevy jcksty (for trnsferring rovisions) nd two-oint nd multi-shi relenishments. he RCN crew onbord Montt consisted of twelve botswins, four bridge wtchkeeers, nd Mritime Surfce nd Sub-surfce Officer Lieutennt who ws the Officer in Chrge of the tem. hey ll found gret benefit from this hnds-on exerience s it llowed them to ut their trining into rcticl use, furthering their rofessionl develoment. he Cndin crew observed the first two semnshi evolutions conducted by the Chilen crew, nd then ctively rticited in follow-on evolutions nd sfely crried out the relenishment of Ottw nd Winnieg. he interoerbility between the two nvies ws semless nd the Cndin crew took direction from the exerienced Chilen crew nd lied the lessons lerned in follow-on semnshi evolutions, remrked Ctin Rene Rojs, Commnding Officer of Almirnte Montt. Within two weeks, the Cndin crew took chrge, confident in their bility to oerte the vrious relenishment sttions onbord Montt, without ssistnce. I ws quite imressed by their rofessionlism. While en route to Esquimlt, the three shis lso exchnged silors dily, referred to s crossollintion, in order to exose greter number of RCN silors to AOR oertions. his oortunity ws well-received by the 26 silors who hd chnce to exerience life onbord tnker for dy. he Cndin crew sent totl of 18 dys on bord the Almirnte Montt, trvelling 4,517 nuticl miles, through five time zones while conducting 21 semnshi evolutions with Ottw nd Winnieg. his ws the third nd finl yer tht the RCN nd Chilen Nvy will conduct RAS force genertion trining together. When news of Grdner s deth reched her coworkers it hit everyone retty hrd. here were lots of ters s her extended fmily here t Rocky Point were left seechless when we herd the sd news, sid Nelson. A dediction ceremony in remembrnce of Grdner ws held t the structure on Aug. 3, nd ws ttended by her husbnd, their son, nd numerous friends nd collegues.
