1 FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY Office for Students with Disabilities Scholarship Review Applications for scholarships are available in March 15th - May 15th for the following academic year. These applications are available from the Office for Students with Disabilities. Application packets are available in alternate format on request. KAREN ABERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP In spite of having a severe mental disorder, Karen Aberson earned an Associate of Arts Degree and completed many courses for a Bachelor*s Degree at FAU. She had a strong desire to pursue an education and to help make the world better. She did not reach her goal; while a student at FAU, Karen committed suicide. The Aberson family established this scholarship in her memory, hoping that the support given will enable another struggling student to succeed. Although a student with any disability may apply, priority consideration is given to an undergraduate student with a documented psychological/emotional disability. Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate student or accepted incoming student Any documented disability -- priority to Psychological/Emotional disability Successfully complete a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester DAMON ANTHONY BETTENDORF SCHOLARSHIP Damon was born with a congenital visual impairment of unknown cause and origin. He never considered his visual loss as an obstacle. He played basketball, ran track, rode a bicycle, learned the piano, composed and wrote songs, and loved to draw. Damon*s self-taught proficiency of computers relates to recipients of the Damon Anthony Bettendorf Scholarship. Priority will be given to a student whose academic interest and major is in a discipline that uses the computer as a tool for technical or artistic design.

2 Currently enrolled FAU student or accepted incoming student Documented visual impairment (minimally legally blind after best possible correction) Good academic standing (2.5 GPA) Successfully complete a minimum of 9 credits per semester BOCA RATON ADVISORY BOARD FOR PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY CHALLENGED SCHOLARSHIP The Boca Raton Advisory Board for the Physically and Mentally Challenged sponsors one annual $500 scholarship for a student with a disability who also demonstrates residency in the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton area or Palm Beach County. This scholarship represents the Board which serves as an advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities. The Board funds this scholarship by the collection of stipends donated by the members of the Board. Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students at Florida Atlantic University. Recipients must successfully complete a minimum of 3 credits each semester. Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate or graduate student in good standing Any documented disability Successfully complete a minimum of 3 credits per semester Restricted to residents of the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton area, or Palm Beach County DENNIS GALLIERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Although not born with a disability, Dennis Galliers, an organ recipient, underwent many surgical procedures. After years of relentless attempts at unsuccessful treatments, he passed away in July, The medications which were so vital in maintaining his donated organ eventually caused him to have great difficulty walking. In his honor, his sister established this

3 scholarship for a student with a disability or a student who will work in the field of physical disabilities and who will one day ease the burden of physically disabled persons. $250 (Number of awards varies annually) Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate/graduate student or accepted incoming students Any documented disability or majoring in the field of physical disabilities Successfully complete a minimum 6 credits per semester STERLING H. HUNTINGTON, M.D., AND LAURA HUNTINGTON SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES The Huntington family initiated these scholarships to support students with physical disabilities other than visual and/or hearing impairments. The family sponsors three annual $500 scholarships for students with disabilities who also demonstrate residency in 1. the City of Boca Raton; 2. the Greater Boca Raton area; or 3. Palm Beach County. The scholarships reflect the area of medicine in which Sterling Huntington, M.D., worked during his life, and the continuing support of the family of Sterling and Laura Huntington for the residents of Boca Raton. $500 (3 awards annually) Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate or graduate student Documented physical disability Successfully complete a minimum 3 credits per semester Demonstrate residency in the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton area, or Palm Beach RENEE LYNN LEVINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Levinson family sponsors an annual $500 scholarship for an FAU student with a psychological disability. This scholarship was established in memory of their daughter, Renee

4 Lynn Levinson, FAU graduate June 2001, B.S. in chemistry to honor a student who succeeds despite a disability. $500 (1 award annually) Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate/graduate student or accepted incoming student Good academic standing(2.0 GPA) Documented psychological disability Successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits each semester LIFELONG LEARNING SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP Each year the Florida Atlantic University Lifelong Learning Society awards a $1000 scholarship to one student in each college to be chosen by the college on the basis of scholarship, financial need and service to the university and/or community. In 1994, the Lifelong Learning Society added OSD to the list of colleges receiving scholarships. The LLS scholarship for OSD is specifically for students who have a disability and who have demonstrated excellence in education and service to the university and/or community while at FAU. $1000 (2 Awards) Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate student -- priority to seniors Academic excellence, minimum 3.0 GPA Service to the University and/or community Any documented disability Successfully complete a minimum 9 credit hours per semester Non-renewable, given for one year only THEODORE R. AND VIVIAN M. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIPS Prior to his death in 1993, Theodore R. Johnson established a charitable trust fund to provide scholarships to students with disabilities who are attending one of Florida s 11 public universities. Mr. Johnson, a retired United Parcel Service executive, made his fortune by buying UPS stock. Mr. Johnson had a hearing impairment and understood the difficulties a person with a disability has to overcome; therefore he wanted to use his money to make sure students with disabilities have the chance to be the best they can. The Theodore R. and Vivian M. Johnson Scholarship is a competitively awarded program which is available to qualified

5 undergraduate students with disabilities who enroll in Florida Atlantic University or another Florida public university. Amount fluctuates (depends on UPS stock); $3000 per year in Unlimited Awards Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate student or accepted incoming student.. Any documented disability.. Successfully complete a minimum 9 credits per semester. Renewable scholarship for up to twelve (12) semesters.
