1 Overview The Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc. ( PRBA ) was established fifty-nine years ago. Sometime thereafter, in 1978, the Puerto Rican Bar Association Scholarship Fund, Inc. (the Scholarship Fund ) was established as a non-profit 501(c) (3) charitable organization. Contributions are deductible to the extent permitted by law. Our scholarship recipients (more than 200 to date) are employed in diverse settings: state and federal courts, city and state agencies, law firms, corporations, not-for profit organizations, law schools, solo practitioners, and also as elected officials. The Scholarship Fund was created to promote diversity in the legal profession by providing financial awards to Puerto Rican and Latino law students. As a public charity, the intent of the Scholarship Fund is to receive income from a wide variety of public and private sources to act as a catalyst which contributes to the economic growth and development of law school students. This year the PRBA Scholarship Fund Fundraiser, Black Tie, Dinner Dance Gala will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016, 6:30 p.m to 11:00 p.m. at Abigail Kirsch at Pier 60, Pier 60, Chelsea Piers. Our 2016 Mistress of Ceremony is Audrey Puente, FOX 5 Meteorologist, and our honorees are: 1) Judicial Excellence -- Latino Judges Association, Inc.; 2) Law Firm Diversity Award -- Stephen Younger, Esq. (Patterson Belknap, Webb & Tyler, LLP); 3) Academic Excellence -- City University of New York; and 4) Community Service Award -- Tito Puente (posthumous). In addition, the award presentations will be followed by dancing and live music performed by the famed Tito Puente, Jr. and Latin Grammy winner Lena Burke. During our cocktail hour Pepe Castillo & Estampa Criolla will provide classical traditional Puerto Rican music.
