Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends, Thank you for your interest in the AAPG Foundation. The AAPG Foundation is a strong support to this generation. The following pages give you an overview of the programs and funds that the AAPG Foundation currently supports. The Board of Trustees also approves projects and proposals for funding which fulfill its mission to support educational, charitable and scientific activities that benefit the geologic profession and the general public. This opportunity is made available by a bequest from L. Austin Weeks. To see a list of projects and programs funded, go online to Thanks to many dedicated contributors, the AAPG Foundation s operating fund now covers the entire cost of operating the AAPG Foundation. That means that 100% of your gift goes directly toward the purpose you designate without the need to set aside a portion to cover administrative or overhead costs. As a thank you for your donation, your name will appear in an upcoming edition of the Explorer magazine. Please take this opportunity to send in your gift or pledge in the enclosed envelope. We ll make sure your gift is directed to the fund that means the most to you. Gifts of over $25,000 are eligible for the establishment of endowments. Sincerely, William L. Fisher Chairman, AAPG Foundation 3
The AAPG Foundation Trustees, Trustee Associates and staff are extremely grateful for your contributions. With your help, the AAPG Foundation is increasing its support for many geological programs. 4
AAPG-OSU Petroleum Geoscience GIS Consortium Established in 2008 through funding by T. Boone Pickens, the Boone Pickens Digital Geology Fund accelerates and sustains AAPG Datapages Geographic Information Systems (GIS) publishing program through the AAPG-Oklahoma State University (OSU) Geoscience GIS Consortium. Mr. Pickens endowment, exceeding $7 million, generates $240,000 per year for this program. ACE - LEAP Leadership, Education & Activities Program AAPG is expanding student initiatives at its Annual Convention & Exhibition (ACE) to include the AAPG Student Leadership, Education and Activities Program (LEAP). Participating students have the opportunity to attend short courses and activities. Subject matter includes basic training, cross-disciplinary exercises and at least one current cutting-edge topic. Awards Fund The Awards Fund provides the funding of the AAPG Honors and Awards. The Honors and Awards program provides a means for recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions by professional geologists, especially in the area of exploration for petroleum and energy mineral resources, and by other professionals who further the goals and objectives of our science, our profession, and our Association. The Bridge Fund The Bridge Fund is dedicated to the creation of a feature length documentary film and companion website that will help alert and inform the world of future trends in energy use and production. 5
Continuing Education Fund The Continuing Education Fund was established to provide a source of funding for post-collegiate training of earth scientists. The program is focused on assisting existing educational institutions with the establishment of computer applications training centers. The centers provide earth science professionals initial and ongoing training to explore for and develop petroleum resources. Daniel Busch Library Fund Established with a gift annuity to the AAPG Foundation by Dr. Daniel A. Busch, earnings from this fund defray any expenses directly related to the operation of the AAPG Foundation Energy Resources Library. Digital Products Fund The Digital Products Fund supports development of electronic documents through Datapages including maps and collections of publications by AAPG Affiliated Societies. Your gift makes the knowledge and experience of prior generations available to today s students and working professionals. Also, endowments within the Digital Products Fund pay for Datapages Archives subscriptions at many colleges and universities. Ask whether your alma mater has an endowed subscription. Your one-time gift of $15,000 will provide perpetual access. 6
Distinguished Lecture Fund The Distinguished Lecture Fund was established to fund the Distinguished Lecture Program, which is the Association s oldest and most popular program, reaching into affiliated societies and universities around the world. In addition to the distinguished lecturers supported by the general earnings of the fund, substantial contributions from companies and individuals support five distinguished lecturers each year whose tours are individually identified with the names of distinguished members being honored or memorialized Roy Huffington, Dean A. McGee, J. Ben Carsey, Merrill Haas-Wallace Pratt, and Allan P. Bennison. The general topic and/or geographic area to be addressed by a Named Distinguished Lecturer may be determined by the donor. E. F. Reid Dibblee Fund The E. F. Reid Dibblee Fund was established to help support the Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. Center for Geology, which was created through the merger of the Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. Geological Foundation and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The Foundation has provided funding for the publication of up to 200 geological maps of central and southern California research by Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. during his lifetime of fieldwork. The late Eugene F. Reid was an avid supporter of the Dibblee mapping projects through generous donations to the Foundation. It was the Foundation Trustees desire to recognize Reid s generosity by naming the fund accordingly. AAPG Bookstore offers 359 of the (more than) 400 Dibblee geological quadrangles. 7
E. F. Reid Scouting Fund The E. F. Reid Scouting Fund supports the teaching of geology to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and youth in other organizations as determined by the Trustees of the Foundation. With support from the Foundation and input from AAPG members and Boy Scout staff, the current Boy Scout Geology Merit Badge requirements and instructive materials were developed. Also, with AAPG Foundation sponsorship, AAPG members perform administrative and teaching functions at various local and national Boy Scout venues in connection with the Geology Merit Badge. The fund began with a Leadership Gift by Eugene F. (Bud) Reid: petroleum geologist, AAPG Past President, AAPG Foundation Trustee, past member of the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board (12 years), and past member of the Executive Committee (8 years) of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Further, he was active in planning and directing World Jamborees and was the BSA representative to many international Scouting committees. General Fund The General Fund exists for the discretionary use of Trustees to support any activity which they deem worthy and is in accord with the purposes for which the Foundation was established; i.e., education, charitable, and scientific activities related to, or allied with the field of geology. 8
Graduate Student Competition The Imperial Barrel Award ceremony is the exciting culmination of AAPG s prospect exploration evaluation and presentation competition. The contest is an annual event between teams of geoscience graduate students and their respective faculties from various universities. Students compete to win scholarship funds for their institutions which are dedicated to petroleum geoscience education. Grants-In-Aid Fund The Grants-in-Aid Fund provides financial support for research to graduate students in geology and related earth sciences. The Named Grants-in-Aid have become an increasingly popular way for members to endow an annual grant in his/her name or in honor of/memory of a family member, respected colleague, organization or institution. The minimum amount needed to establish a $500 Named/ Memorial Grant is currently $12,500. Funding which reaches $75,000 funds the highest awarded grants of $3,000. Holland Award of Excellence With an endowment established by David Scotty Holland, this cash award is given annually to a selected faculty member from the Holland School of Sciences and Math at Hardin-Simmons University. The selected faculty is recognized for high achievement. The funds are to be used for professional development and enrichment. 9
James A. Hartman Student Fund To fund AAPG bookstore $25 gift certificates given to student presenters at the student session of the annual conference. K-12 Education Fund The K-12 Education Fund provides the Foundation s ongoing support for geological education in earth science courses being taught in elementary and secondary schools. Special emphasis is placed on the importance to society of the production of natural resources ranging from gravel to oil and natural gas. Some of the programs funded from within the K-12 Education Fund are the Educate the Teachers, which we affectionately refer to as the John Bookout initiative because of his continued support, the AGI Earth Science Week Program and K-12 Student Field Trips and Teachers Day at the AAPG Annual meeting. In addition, this fund provides an annual cash award of $5,000 to the AAPG K-12 Teacher of the Year Award. L. Austin Weeks Memorial Fund Established in 2005 from a bequest from L. Austin Weeks to provide funding for programs and projects that promote the science of petroleum geology, the fund is unrestricted and distributed at the discretion of the Trustees. L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Fund Established in the fall of 1997 by Mr. Weeks to assist undergraduate students and their universities, this fund provides $1,000 grants per school to each qualified AAPG Student Chapter as outlined in the program. 10
Michel T. Halbouty Fund This fund awards the Michel T. Halbouty Texas A & M University/American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation Endowed Fellowship to a worthy and deserving student enrolled in Texas A & M University at College Station, Texas. The recipient shall be a student in good standing pursuing a graduate degree in geology, geophysics, or geosciences from Texas A & M University. Michel T. Halbouty Lecture Fund The Michel T. Halbouty Lecture Fund supports an annual lecture focusing on exploration to be given at the AAPG Annual Convention & Exhibition. The subject of the lecture must deal with wildcat exploration in any part of the world, especially in areas where major discoveries might contribute significantly to petroleum reserves or space exploration where astrogeological knowledge would further mankind s ability to develop resources on earth and in our solar system. Named Public Service Fund Established to provide an endowed source of unrestricted funds to support programs and projects which further the mission of the Foundation. For a minimum contribution of $25,000, a donor is allowed to name a fund in honor of his or her family or colleagues. The first three named endowments are: the Hugh Looney Excellence Endowment Fund, established by friends and family to honor the late Hugh Looney, the Gibbs Family Endowment Fund, and the Jack and Catherine I. Threet Endowment Fund for the Advancement of Petroleum Geology. 11
Paul & Deana Strunk Geology Fellowship To honor Paul & Deana Strunk, and to provide financial assistance to a grad student in the Geology Department of Kansas State University. Professorial Grants Fund The Professorial Grants Fund was established to provide financial assistance for college and university professors to help defray the cost of attending AAPG courses. PublicationS Pipeline This program strives to improve geoscience education in countries abroad by providing used geoscience books and periodicals at no cost to eligible libraries that request them. Donations of geoscience books and periodicals are collected and forwarded to overseas universities and libraries. Publications are donated by company libraries or geoscientists, some of whom are retired or deceased. The AAPG Foundation provides funding to ship these materials. To date, the committee has shipped over 70 tons of publications to numerous universities serving an untold number of students in more than a dozen countries. Region Special Lecture Program Geoscience lecturers in the AAPG regions are in continuous demand, especially from universities and AAPG affiliated societies. This program is designed to enable regional offices to select top scientists from each region to make a tour within the region, focusing on regional exploration plays and development projects or on current geoscience/technical issues. 12
Search and Discovery: Online Technical Resource Search and Discovery ( com) publishes online the many talks, posters and videos from AAPG conventions, education workshops and section/ region meetings. This Datapages service is extremely popular among AAPG members, students and the scientific community at large as a form of open access publishing. This free service costs us more than $200,000 per year and your gift will provide for the continuation of this vital resource. Special Publications Fund AAPG is one of the top petroleum geoscience publishers in the world. Special publications provide members and other industry professionals with focused and timely studies on critical scientific topics. Visiting Geoscientist Fund The Visiting Geoscientist Fund provides funding for selected geologists to visit college/university earth science departments to discuss career opportunities with students and faculty. 13
Wallace Pratt Bulletin Fund Established in 1971, this fund provides support of publishing the AAPG BULLETIN. Web Services The portal to our profession s future is through web services. Online resources represent the primary method for dissemination of scientific information. With generations of available information waiting to be digitized, AAPG has barely scratched the surface on this opportunity. Emerging Opportunities Do you have an interest in an area not represented in this brochure? Call the Foundation office to discuss the next great program or initiative! extension
