1 T.L. Hanna High School Guidance Department Scholarships Updated: October 19, 2012 This list is updated regularly, so check back frequently. If a scholarship is of interest to you, go ahead and pursue it. Do not wait until the deadline to apply. Notice that the scholarships are listed in chronological order by their due date, but the most recent additions will be in red. October 2012 Deadlines Horatio Alger Scholarships These scholarships are for seniors that have a financial need and especially for those that have worked to overcome some adversity in their lives: illness, death of a parent, adverse situations, etc. Six students from South Carolina will receive up to a $5,000 scholarship each. One major qualification for this scholarship is critical financial need (i.e., adjusted gross income of family is less than $50,000.) If more income is earned by the family, an explanation must be provided. Other qualifications include a strong commitment to pursuing a bachelor s degree, involvement in co-curricular and community activities, integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, a minimum grade point average of 2.0, and citizenship in the United States. The deadline for applying for this scholarship is October 25, The application must be completed online at National Center for Women & Information Technology Award Calling all digital divas, web chix, and coder girls in grades 9 through 12. NCWIT seeks high-school-level young women to apply for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing! This award honors young women active and interested in computing and encourages them to pursue their passion for technology. Winners get cool prizes, gadgets, and scholarships, and can join a community of like-minded technical women. National award-winners are selected from across the country and Affiliate Award competitions are available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. All girls at all computing levels are encouraged to apply. National award-winners will receive $500 in cash, laptop computer, an engraved award, and a trip to the award ceremony on April 27, To apply, students should visit deadline to apply is October 31, Martin Luther King Scholarships The MLK Dream Weekend Scholarship Committee is sponsoring twelve scholarships to students of the upstate. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $15,000 and total over $100,000. Some of these scholarships (e.g., MLK Dreamer Scholarship, Coretta Scott King Dream Keeper Scholarship) can be applied toward any colleges. Others are college specific (e.g., Greenville Tech, USC-Upstate, Furman, and Clemson), and must be used at those participating colleges. To receive these scholarships, students must demonstrate financial need as well as meet other requirements. See the individual scholarships for the different qualifications and requirements. November 2012 Deadlines Prudential Spirit of Community Awards The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor students in grades 5 through 12 who have demonstrated exemplary voluntary service to their communities. The maximum amount for this award is $5,000. Students in grades 5-12 that have conducted a volunteer service activity within the past year may

Fifty-two winners (one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico) are selected to receive scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $25,000. These students share these qualities: ambition and drive; determination to set and reach goals; respect for self, family and community; and ability to succeed in college. Kittie Moss Fairey Scholarship Program The Kittie Moss Fairey Scholarship Program is for students whose parents have an annual household income of $40,000 or less and that plan to attend a four-year college or university in South Carolina. Scholarship amounts fluctuate from year-to-year depending upon the number of applicants as well as the amount of funds available. In the past, scholarship amounts have been up to 1/2 tuition, room, and board. To be eligible, applicants must have a three 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and a combined SAT score of 1800 or a composite ACT score of 26. Additional requirements include a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale and the desire to attend a four-year college or university located in South Carolina in the fall of The deadline to apply for the scholarship is December 1, For more information, visit or contact Susan Lee at South Carolina Teaching Fellows The S.C. Teaching Fellows Program is located on select college campuses. These include: Anderson University, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Columbia College, Furman University, Lander University, Newberry College, SC State University, USC-Columbia, USC-Upstate or Winthrop University. Award recipients agree to teach in South Carolina one year for every year they receive the fellowship. The award is worth up to $6,000 per year. Young Entrepreneur Foundation Scholarship The NFIB young entrepreneur awards are one-time scholarships created to recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, and the awards range in value from $1000-$10,000. This program was established to raise awareness among the nation s youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America. These awards are open to any graduating high school senior that owns and operates his/her own small business. They dream of the college that they will attend and the education that they will receive. Unfortunately, many of those students cannot afford to get the

To help them accomplish this, the network of US Chapters of the Ronald McDonald House charities, along with RMHC Global, offers scholarships to students in financial need that have demonstrated both academic achievement and community involvement. The primary purpose of the Scholarship Program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States. The contest is open to students in grades nine through twelve. The local contest will be held January 12, 2013, with winners advancing to higher level competition. State scholarships range from $500 to $2000. These students must demonstrate financial need as well as exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Each year, roughly 20 Scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for an additional three years. June 2013 Deadlines More Scholarships Navy ROTC Scholarships If a college degree and a successful career are your objectives, NROTC is the way to get both money for school and experience for life. This scholarship can provide enough money (up to $180,000) to cover up to four and in some cases (e.g., engineering, physics, etc.), even five years of tuition, textbooks, a monthly spending allowance, and other related fees. Plus, upon graduation, you will be placed in a job in an exciting career field. There are 160 top colleges and universities that participate (including USC and the Citadel), and there is no obligation to commit to the Navy until your sophomore of college. American Legion Scholarship Students can attend college tuition-free in South Carolina if parent was a war time veteran and met certain criteria: 1) was KIA 2) died while in service 3) died of disability resulting from service 4) was a
