1 2016 Scholarship Program Application Submission Deadline: July 15, 2016 The Association of Wall Ceiling & Carpentry Industries of New York, Inc. remains committed to helping students access a high-quality college education. As such, the Association is pleased to again this year sponsor the WC&C Scholarship Program for deserving students meeting the eligibility requirements outlined below: ELIGIBILITY: 1. Applicant must have a parent* who is a member in good standing of one of the following District Councils/Unions: (*Members attending college are also eligible): United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America o New York City District Council of Carpenters o Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters District Council No. 9 IUPAT Drywall Tapers Local Union The Scholarship is open to students at any year in their studies. 3. Each award is a one-time only grant (past award winners are not eligible). CRITERIA: The WC&C Scholarship Committee will review the applications and apply a point system to various measures of achievement, including but not limited to: Grade Point Average / Transcript / Class Rank; SAT Scores; Extra-Curricular Activities and Affiliations; Letters of Recommendation; Employment History / Community & Volunteer Service; and Essay. APPLICATIONS: Applications may be obtained from our website at www-wcc-ny.com. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: Twelve (12) $3,000 awards will be granted this year. Award check will be issued to winning student and mailed to the home address listed on their application. 9 United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 11 Scholarship Charitable Trust Scholarship Requirements 2017 Eligibility: Must be a dependent child of an active or retired member of Local Union 279 in good standing. Must be under the age of 25. Must be a high school senior or already enrolled in college as a full time undergraduate student. Must have and maintain a grade point average of at least 75%, or a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or an average letter grade of C or higher. Must submit proof that he/she has provided a positive impact on the community as a volunteer from April 16, 2016 thru April 15, 2017 Must submit a copy of his or her Official Transcript for the current academic year and the prior academic year. (Must be signed and seal by School/College) (See attachment) Must write an essay explaining (1) Why he or she should be considered for this scholarship. (2) What positive civic act or acts he or she has done over the past year ending April 15, 2017, either individually or as part of a group (such as volunteering in the community, town cleanups, hospital or nursing home volunteer work, civic work through boy/girl scouts, volunteer work for a political campaign, volunteer firefighter, and other civic clubs and organizations) Attach proof of positive civic act. (3) How the union has impacted his or her family; and (4) His or Her goals and ambitions for the future. The essay must NOT include any applicant s name or the name of any member of the union. Application Procedures: The scholarship is granted annually, and applicants must apply annually in order to be considered. Applications must be complete with all requirements. DEADLINE FOR COMPLETED APPLICATION AND OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN APRIL 15, 2017 AND MUST BE RECEIVED IN OFFICE NO LATER THAN APRIL 30, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPLICANTS TO ENSURE RECIEPT OF OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT. Determination of Winners Winners shall be selected anonymously. The applicants names and members names will be unknown to the scholarship committee throughout the selection process. For this reason, the applicants names and members names should be omitted from the essay. Determination will be made after considering each completed applicants eligibility, civic contribution, and written essay. Use of Scholarship Funds: Funds may be used to pay for tuition, laboratory fees, books, education-related fees, on campus room and board expenses. Page 1
