Fatima balances her love for Mathematics and the Sciences with her passion for the performing arts and photography. She is an active member of the Angklung Ensemble. She finds giving back to society in however small ways the most enriching moments in her life. Her ability to empathise with children from challenging backgrounds is what enables her to do so much good for those we often fail to notice in society. It is through her keen observation skills that she is able to empathise with those she photographs and interacts with, bridging any social gaps with humility and respect, and develop in her a sincere appreciation for diversity. When asked what inspires her in life, she describes in her own words the move her family made when they migrated from Pakistan to Singapore as the inspiration: When I was still crawling along at the tender age of one, my parents packed our bags, dried their tears and shifted us from Pakistan to Singapore. It was only much later that I finally began to realise how profound an impact this shift had had, was having and would have on my life. We like to think that we see as far as we do because we stand on our own two feet, but our vision is only so great because we stand on the shoulders of giants. Bolstered by the good people who taught me, those who cared for me when I stumbled and friends who lent a hand when my own feet gave way, I found myself in a nurturing environment. I marvelled as all of us learnt how to walk the tight rope between integration and acceptance. The effort put into maintaining this balance allowed me to retain a unique sense of individuality while acquiring an identity that was also uniquely Singaporean. I suppose that is, after all, Singapore s secret her charming plan to empower, and nurture individuals who can, and will then build on what they have been given, in Singapore, for Singapore. The Rafflesian Award bears testimony to Fatima s all-round excellence in all aspects of school life. Fatima has a strong sense of purpose, motivation to use all her gifts and talents to serve others and an unwavering desire to live and leave a legacy of good. Besides being an intelligent, ethical thinker, Fatima is a sincere, compassionate leader and epitomises the all-rounded young woman that the school aspires to make of every RGS girl. 39
