Applications must contain complete answers and be typed or printed legibly in black ink. SOURCE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP The Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (PFSMA), in honor of the 3,505 submariners and 52 submarines lost in World War II, has generously offered The Bowfin Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is raised through the admission tickets and gift shop sales of the Bowfin Memorial, and is administered by the PFSMA in conjunction with the Pearl Harbor Submarine Officers' Spouses Association). ELIGIBILITY OF THE SCHOLARSHIP All members of the Hawaii submarine force community (active duty or retired), their family members, and family members of deceased submariners who reside in Hawaii, and who are attending an accredited college, university or vocational school are eligible. If the applicant is a submariner, he should consider himself the sponsor in completing all information concerning sponsors. Members of the SOSA Bowfin Scholarship Committee, including the judges, their spouses, or family members, are not eligible to apply. TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS (1) Academic Scholarship Applicants must be under the age of 23 at the time of the application and must be the children of submarine force personnel (active duty, retired or deceased). These students may attend college anywhere in the United States; however, the submarine sponsor or surviving parent must live in Hawaii at the time of application. Awards will be made based on scholastic performance, demonstrated potential, extracurricular activities and financial need. (2) Continuing Education Scholarship - Applicants must be submarine force personnel (active duty, retired or deceased), their spouses, or the spouse of deceased submarine force personnel. Applicants must live in Hawaii at the time of the application and during the period the scholarship benefits will be utilized. Awards will be based on scholarship, community involvement, motivation, goals and financial need. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Scholarships will be offered after completed applications are reviewed and finalists are interviewed. The scholarship recipients will be notified by mail and will receive certificates at a ceremony held at the Bowfin Memorial in May Applicants should be present to receive the scholarships or have their sponsors or family in attendance to receive the scholarships. Awards will not be distributed prior to May. The scholarship proceeds shall be paid in the form of a check made payable jointly to the recipient and the school that the recipient will attend. Scholarship recipients must use the proceeds within one year from the date of the award. Any unused proceeds will revert back to the PFSMA for future scholarships. Scholarships may be used for tuition, books and materials, or lab fees only. APPLICATION PROCEDURE The completed application, with all required supporting documentation, must be sent to the Bowfin Memorial Scholarship Committee, postmarked no later than March 15, The application must include: (1) Completed application (including essay and applicable attachments) (2) An official sealed transcript from the applicants' high school or college ***NOTE: Continuing Education Scholarship applicants may exclude the transcript requirement if their educational career has been interrupted for more than seven years.
