12 CODE OF ETHICS FOR COACHES CODE OF ETHICS FOR COACHES 1. I will consider the health of my players, not use anyone who is sick or injured, and refer to a competent physician all evident physical or organic defects. 2. I will integrate my philosophy of athletics with the general philosophy of education and instill proper attitudes in my athletes so that they may become aware of the role of athletics in education. 3. I will conduct myself so as to be a credit to the educational profession and to encourage greater player and spectator sportsmanship. I will always use ethical methods in scouting a team. I will teach and practice true sportsmanship at school, on the street and in the public. 4. Whereas I will strive to win, I will also attempt to be graceful in losing; I will be modest in victory and gracious in defeat. 5. I will respect officials, compliment them on a good job, and level protests at them only through the Alabama High School Athletic Association. 6. I will treat visiting teams, coaches and officials as guests. 7. I will wholeheartedly maintain good relations with other coaches. I will not be guilty of repeating rumors or stories that will be detrimental to the good name of sports. I will offer congratulations win or lose and never be guilty of pouring it on. 8. I will establish coach-player relationships on the basis of mutual respect and confidence. 9. I will not approve commercialism, solicitation, subsidizing, or professionalism entering into high school athletics. 10. I will maintain cordial and cooperative relations with the school administration and faculty. I will be loyal to the school administration and my fellow coaches. 11. I will subscribe to the theory that athletics is for the eligible students who live in my school community. 12. I will subscribe to the principle that in high school athletics the total welfare of the participants and students comes first. 12
