1 Page 1 of 16 District Governor June 2012 Newsletter To my Family of Rotary, June is e Rotary Mon of Fellowship. Rotary was founded in Fellowship and in Vocational Service. It is rough ese two fundamentals of Rotary at we give back to our communities and do service for our fellow man. As I stated last mon, Fellowship means respect, harmony and dignity for each member, regardless. It means at you respect one anoer s opinions even ough yours may differ. It means at you respect each and every Rotarian as a member of your family. When we join Rotary, we are club members, it is rough our weekly meetings, our education and training, involving ourselves in service projects and in fellowship at we become Rotarians. Fellowship is e glue at keeps us togeer. This is also my last Monly Newsletter as your District Governor. This past year has been a wonderful journey for Ilean and myself. The best part was in meeting and making so many new friends. There are so many to ank for is past year at I am going to use is letter to express my deep gratitude and appreciation to ose who Made it Happen and Made a Difference. The following is a brief review of e highlights of our year togeer. Under New Generations Director Joel Kopke, You Exchange Chair Bob & Carol Saghirian, RYLA Chair, PDG Jim Lilley, Interact Chair Melanie Druziako, and Rotaract Chairs Dr. Tom Isekenegbe and Aaron Cohen ere was a marked increase in our You programs. We sent 8 students abroad and we received 8 students in e You Exchange Program. We will be sending over 150 students to RYLA is year. We increased our Interact Clubs to 45 wi ousands of students.. The District has 4 Rotaract clubs. Most important, our you programs are now more integrated and working wi each oer. This year e Rotary Foundation Committee lead by Director PDG Bernadette Jennings continues to make great strides by Donating District Designated Funds of $5,000 to e Disaster Relief Fund for Vermont & New Hampshire $2, to e Disaster Relief Fund for e Horn of Africa $5, for e Mission to Thailand for Medical, Dental and Eyesight projects and $7, in District Simplified Grants to 5 clubs. The GSE program wi Chair Tim Datig sent a medical team under e leadership of Rose Marie McCary to District Kenya and Uganda and we received a GSE Team from District 9125 Nigeria wi Bob Spence as Chairing e Inbound. Bo were hugely successful

2 District Event Page 2 of 16 District Governor June 2012 Newsletter Kick Polio off e Planet, Dining wi Rotary Chefs, our first Networking Under e Stars event and e Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale were District events where e proceeds went to Annual Giving or to Polio Plus. The Speakers Bureau has been updated to give your program chairs ta greater opportunity to present bo Rotarian and non-rotarian Speakers to your clubs. Under e Chairmanship of Les Vail, we finalized a Strategic Plan for e District and set an example for e clubs. Many anks to Christina Pinizzotto for her dedication to e Josh e Otter project which became a major project for 24 clubs providing Water Safety and Literacy information to ousands of children. Again, under e Leadership of Pete Stafford, e District shipped anoer 40 foot container loaded wi food and supplies of e Orphanage in Santo Domingo. Established a You Protection Plan for e District guided by Chair Bob Garrett wi ESSEX as e provider of background checks for our You Exchange, RYLA and Interact programs. Thanks to e District Trainer, PDG CarolAnn Jeronimo, we had an outstanding year. A well attended PETS, Leadership Training, District Assembly and a fantastic program at e District Conference. And for e District Conference it was a tremendous success, anks to our Conference Chair, PDG Sam Conte.. To Ron Williams for maintaining our Web Site and to Roger Jones for his great Monly Newsletters Thank you. Wi Toby Koch as Special Representative, We chartered a new Club in District 7640, The Rotary Club of Cherry Hill Twilight wi 28 Charter members. If I left anyone off I am sorry. 4 District Event Page 4 of 16 SOS from e Armando Rosenburg Orphanage in e Dominican Republic The orphanage has been wiout freezers for two years now. A grant was being put togeer to supply two each plus some roof repairs. The grant failed, however, e Villages Rotary Club in Florida wants to help and has donated $1,200. Towards e freezer project. What can Rotarians in District 7640 do to help is cause? Club Presidents, can your club spare $50. Individual club members, friends of Rotary can make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION specifically for e freezer project. Checks Payable To Orchid Foundation Inc. (A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION) 254 Sou 38 Street Brigantine, NJ USA Orchid Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, is dedicated to e continued service and maintenance of e Armando Rosenberg Home and School. The orphanage, located in Sabana Perdida, e largest barrio in Santo Domingo, e capital of e Dominican Republic, currently houses one hundred and fifty children from roughout e Dominican Republic. There are, in addition, seven hundred students who walk to school from surrounding areas for education. 9 Around e District Page 9 of 16 Pitman Rotary club Pitman Spring Craft Show was Again a Success Great weaer, a good number of crafty vendors and a solid crowd made for a successful Pitman Craft Fair on Saturday, May 19 in downtown Pitman. Part of a twice annual tradition for over 30 years, two full blocks of Broadway and a block of Pitman Avenue are closed to vehicles and shoppers are treated to a long row of homemade wares and goodies. Many local non-profit organizations participate including e Pitman Rotary Club, supporting eir fundraising efforts and making it a real community event. The Rotary Club treated e shoppers to hotdogs, cotton candy, funnel cake and drinks. Overall e club made over $1200 in profits to be used for projects locally and internationally. The Pitman Rotary Club was pleased to induct Gillian Binck from Susquehanna Bank as a new member at its Tuesday, June 5 luncheon at e Pitman Manor. Dr. Steve Simmerman welcomed Gillian wi a short speech about Rotary and a traditional story about how Rotary stopped e train for him as a young boy. Angela will attend Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. Angela will study communications. She will receive $1,000. 13 Around e District Page 13 of 16 The Rotary Club of Washington Township Works to Save Young Lives The Rotary Club of Washington Township s weekly meeting on Thursday, May 3rd was different an any typical lunch meeting you might be used to. On is special Thursday, e culmination of a project led by Community Service Chair David Jack from Columbia Savings Bank was underway. Members of e Rotary Club of Washington Township, along wi Rotary You Leadership Awards candidates from Washington Township High School helped put togeer 600 Josh e Otter book packages for delivery to kindergartners. Josh e Otter is a water safety program started by e Joshua Collingswor Memorial Foundation. The Foundation was started by Kay and Blake Collingswor after eir young son drowned in June of Their program strives to combat early childhood drowning e number one killer of children under 5 rough eir children s book and school outreaches. They have partnered wi many large charitable groups like Rotary International e parent organization for all local Rotary Clubs. More information can be found on eir website at After Thursday s meeting, Rotary Club President Bob Johns along wi David Jack and Vince Esposito visited wi e children at Grenloch Terrace. The book packages were given out in e hopes at e Rotary Club can help e Joshua Collingswor Memorial Foundation eliminate childhood drowning rough generational awareness across e country. Every year, ousands of talented and dedicated young people, ages 12-30, have an incredible experience in a New Generations program. Runnemede Bellmawr Glendora Rotary Club participated in Josh e Otter Water Safety Night As Rotaractors and Interactors, ey serve in communities at home and abroad. Through Rotary You Exchange, ey explore new cultures. And as Rotary You Leadership Awards participants, ey learn skills at will help em succeed as future community leaders. New Generations is Rotary s fif Avenue of Service. Learn how your club can get involved in An Introduction to New Generations Service (735). Interact Fueling a lifetime of service for young people ages RYLA Runnemede Bellmawr Glendora Rotary Club participated in Josh e Otter Water Safety Night On June 4, 2012, The Bellmawr School District Family Liaison Center along wi e support of e Runnemede Bellmawr Glendora Rotary Club held a Water and Bike Safety evening at e local elementary school, where children were able to learn about water safety wi e help of Josh e Otter himself. The children were given e Josh e Otter books and participated in activities around water safety and ere was musical portion of e program where children were able to sing e Josh e Otter water safety song and make e official pledge to be safe around water. Children were also encouraged to bring out eir bikes and helmets and a representative from The Peddler s Shop from Deptford did bike inspections while a representative from Safe Kids performed helmets inspections. 50 lucky children even went home wi brand new bike helmets. This event was a huge success for Bellmawr and it s residents!

15 Garden State Rotary Club of Cherry Hill District 7640 Around e District Page 15 of 16 Cherry Hill West Interact Club Cloing Drive On May 4 some members of e Garden State Rotary Club of Cherry Hill took part in e Bronx Rotary Club Traveling Painting Fundraiser. The oil picture is a painting of sunflowers. We were e first to respond. After we returned e picture it was passed on to anoer club. If you a r e i n t e r e s t e d p l e a s e l o g i n t o and join in e fun in sharing is picture! Shown here is a tractor trailer at e Cherry Hill West Interact Club filled wi 2,000 pounds of cloes. The proceeds went to Doctors Wiout Borders.
