2 Invitation from the President and Provost We invite you to participate in this year s December Graduation, a time of celebration as the SMU community gathers to recognize our students accomplishments. December Graduation will be a memorable occasion for you and your family. The personal attention so important to SMU takes center stage as each graduate is individually recognized and Moody Coliseum becomes transformed by the pageantry. December Graduation is Saturday, December 15, at 10 a.m. in Moody Coliseum, at which time the University assembles degree candidates from all of SMU s seven schools. The activities that make up December Graduation express some of the best traditions of SMU. Students and faculty in academic regalia march with their respective schools, accompanied by music and applause from proud families. The ceremony is expected to last approximately two hours. Information concerning December Graduation can be found at the December Graduation website, smu.edu/decgrad. Guests do not need tickets to attend the ceremony. Complimentary parking will be available throughout the campus for friends and family. The spirit of community, combined with our celebration of the individual, is what makes SMU s December Graduation a most joyous time. 4 Description of Events On Saturday morning, the all-university December Graduation ceremony assembles degree candidates from all of SMU s schools and professional programs. The ceremony takes place in Moody Coliseum, which is adorned with colorful banners and drapery. The festive decorations enrich this notable celebration. Students and faculty, dressed in academic regalia, enter the Coliseum to grand processional music. Graduation speakers impart knowledge unto our newest class of candidates. Then, as degrees are conferred, each candidate is individually recognized and photographed as he or she walks across the stage. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Varsity is played as the Coliseum lights are dimmed, and a prayer is said for the recently appointed alumni. For guests who are unable to attend, the ceremony is simulcast live. The ceremony lasts approximately two hours. Guests do not need tickets. 5 Information for Candidates On Saturday morning, students will report to Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports and will assemble with their degree group. 6 Complete Your ACG Students must file an Application for Candidacy to Graduate (ACG) form with their school of record. Students who have not informed their academic dean that they will participate in the December Graduation ceremony must do so immediately. Student RSVPs Students will RSVP to the ceremony on the Application for Candidacy to Graduate form. An Academic Records Counselor will confirm your attendance closer to the date of the ceremony. Your participation in the December Graduation ceremony is expected by the University but is not mandatory. Announcements and Invitations Personalized invitations and announcements may be ordered at the Grad Fair, the SMU Bookstore or directly from herffjones.com/college/smu. For more information, please call the SMU Bookstore at Academic Regalia All participating candidates must wear academic regalia to be admitted into Dedman Center. Regalia must be pre-ordered at the Graduation Fair or through the Herff Jones website at herffjones.com/college/smu by November 1. Telephone and in-person orders will not be accepted. All regalia will be available for pickup from the SMU Bookstore beginning December 8. A limited selection of regalia will be available to students who did not pre-order regalia. No honor ribbons, decorations or adornments are worn to the ceremony, including messages or images on mortarboards. Students without regalia or with altered mortarboards will be directed to the SMU Bookstore to rent a new cap and/or gown. All rented gowns and hoods should be returned to the SMU Bookstore by 5 p.m. on graduation day. A $10 per-day late return fee will be applied on Monday, December SMU S Second Century Celebration

7 SMU Centennial Ring In 1997, students, faculty and alumni felt the need to preserve the timeless tradition of the SMU Centennial Ring, originally created in It is the tangible and recognizable symbol of pride in SMU and its history. The SMU Centennial Ring is a link with classmates, friends and alumni spread all over the world. The ring can be viewed and purchased at the Grad Fair or online at smu.edu/smuring. For questions regarding the Ring Ceremony, please call Commemor ate the Occasion SMU Graduation DVD SMU is partnering with GradMemory to provide a professional video of the December Graduation ceremony. The Graduation DVD contains the complete graduation ceremony with all keynotes and speeches as well as candidates walking across the stage. Diploma preservation Frame You will have an opportunity to purchase a diploma preservation frame from the Michael Sutter Company after graduation. Each diploma frame will contain a second, complimentary diploma. Please visit michaelsutter.com/pqf.html to view the variety of frames available. All graduates will receive an from the Michael Sutter Company after graduation with information on how to order a diploma frame. Photographs Personal photographs may be taken only before and after the December Graduation ceremony. Arrangements have been made with a professional photographer to take candidates photographs as they walk across the stage. Low heels or flat shoes are recommended. The temperature in Moody Coliseum is maintained for the comfort of those in regalia. Guests should bring a light jacket. Men traditionally wear khaki pants and a sports coat or a suit. Women traditionally wear dress slacks and a nice blouse or a dress. Parking, Access and MOBILITY-IMPAIRED Guests Those attending December Graduation activities may park free of charge in any of SMU s parking facilities. Construction at SMU is ongoing. For information regarding road closures, parking availability and handicapped access, please check our December Graduation website one week before the ceremony. Visit smu.edu/decgrad to sign up for up-to-date alerts regarding parking, access and disabled guest accommodations. SIMULCAST For guests who are unable to attend December Graduation, the ceremony will be simulcast live. The URL at which the ceremony can be viewed worldwide will be ed to the SMU community at a later date.
