3 Study Abroad Fairs are very common around the world, mainly in big cities. Sometimes,even people who live far from these metropolises go there just to have a chance to talk to representatives from the schools and universities they want to study at. Many of these fairs are so crowded that it is difficult to get to the universities booths and talk to the representatives, who might be tired because of the tight schedule. Also, the high cost to participate in these fairs might prevent some universities from joining. To end these problems, the TOP CAREER Virtual Study Abroad was born. In its first event, focused on Japanese universities, about 6,000 people participated in the fair. The second event, from January to April, 2013, became more globalized, with the participation of HEC Paris, McGill, Wharton, London Business School, for Europe and the U.S.A, and POSTECH, Fudan University, Universitas Indonesia, The University of Tokyo, and so on for Asia. The easy-to-access virtual environment allows students to take their time looking at information about universities, making the Virtual Fair a great tool for first contact with schools. Since many universities take part in it, even those students who have no idea where to go or what to study can navigate through the website and get some ideas on what to do in future. 4 Japan is urgently trying to globalize its Universities. The numbers of International students in the Japanese Universities are increasing every year and the influence they have given to the environment and the academic results are clearly visible. Getting good students to enroll in the universities is an important mission for each University. However, it is true that although studying in Japan is much lower in cost compared to studying in the US, which should be very appealing to the students considering overseas study, it is still very costly, which prevents them to choose Japan as their destination. Thus, The Japanese government, organizations, companies, and universities are offering various scholarships to financially support the students with high motivation and academic records. Major Sources for Scholarships The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbu-Kagaku-sho: MEXT) Scholarships and the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Scholarships are the majorsource of scholarships for international students. Besides MEXT and JASSO, there are at least 176 other scholarship types being offered by the government and private institutions. Each one has its own requirements and specification; the scholarships may look difficult to get, but the students who try their best always get rewarded. TOP CAREER Scholarship Upon our President Yohei Shibasaki being selected as the World Economic Forum, Young Global Leaders (YGL) 2013 on March 12th, we decided to establish a scholarship to further support the young talents taking the challenge for an international career. 5 Students all over the world dream about studying in Japan. They want to come, but some of them end up not doing because of one major barrier: language. For others, distance is the biggest problem. Considering the above, 13 universities were chosen by the Japanese Government to be the gateway for change: they offer courses in English and the entrance exams are taken in the student s home country under the Global 30 Project. To establish a University Network for internationalization, this five-year project launched in fiscal 2009 to help achieve the plan for accepting 300,000 international students to Japan. Courses in all major fields are available, from Medicine to Engineering to Liberal Arts, Life Science and Art. Even interdisciplinary courses are available, so it s easy to find a fit. The universities included in the Global 30 Project also provide their international students with a friendly environment at school, living and housing support. Most of these universities also have a career center, where you can find support to build your career in Japan.
