2 On behalf of the Mayor s Hispanic Advisory Council (MHAC) it is my pleasure to extend an invitation to our 19th Annual Latinos Unidos Luncheon. Each year, this event unites hundreds of community leaders in an effort to showcase the cultural and economic influence Latino s have made within our community; last year we had a record attendance of over 600 attendees! City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn While the growth of this event is impressive, what is even more remarkable is the impact Hispanics are having within our city, our state, our nation and around the globe. Mayor Bob Martinez recognized this impact 35 years ago and created the City of Tampa Mayors Hispanic Advisory Council (formerly the Hispanic Task Force). His vision for the council was to serve as a liaison between the City Government and the Hispanic Community, by recommending programs and activities, serving as a forum and promoting a network of communication among various community groups. Today, we achieve the vision through the continued success of the Latinos Unidos Luncheon. This staple event delivers an inspiring key note speaker, recognizes a community leader & provides scholarships to the University of South Florida, University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College. 3 Latinos Unidos Luncheon This annual MHAC event showcases the rising influence and economic impact of Hispanics in our Tampa Bay area, our state, and nation. Leaders from the corporate or non-profit world are invited keynote speakers at the luncheon. All net proceeds of the event are designated for local Hispanic students with financial need attending Hillsborough Community College, the University of South Florida, and the University of Tampa through MHAC endowments established at these institutions. With attendance in excess of six hundred last year, the Latinos Unidos Luncheon is one of the most successful Hispanic events in the area and draws a diverse audience of business and community leaders. Garcia, CEO Sterling Financial Services, Lou Plasencia, CEO The Plasencia Group, Carlos Fuente, Jr., Tabacalera Arturo Fuente, Col. Maritza Ryan, Head of the Legal Department at the US Academy at West Point, Dr. Antonia Coello Novello, first Hispanic and first female Surgeon General of the United States of America, Vince Roig, CEO Helios Education Foundation, Kimberly Casiano, Board Member Ford Motor Company, Mr. Frank Unanue, President of Goya Foods of Florida, Mercedes Soler, CNN, Alex M. 4 2017 Latinos Unidos Luncheon Keynote Speaker Richard Gonzmart s education in the hospitality industry began almost as soon as when he was born. His earliest recollection was from 3 ½ -years-old when his grandfather, Casimiro Hernandez Jr., taught him how to identify fresh fish. Richard is the great-grandson of Casimiro Hernandez, Sr., the founder of the world-famous Columbia Restaurant in Tampa s Historic Ybor City. Founded in 1905, the Columbia is the oldest restaurant in Florida, the oldest Hispanic restaurant in the US and the largerst Spanish restaurant in the world. Under Richard s direction, the Columbia has expanded from two locations to seven. Gonzmart also is responsible for the creation and development of Cha Cha Coconuts, with a location in Sarasota. In August 2014 Richard opened Ulele, named for the daughter of a legendary Native American chief. The menu features items indigenous to this area s waters and farms. Ulele is on the Hillsborough River, just north of downtown Tampa in Tampa Heights. It's the site of a former City of Tampa Water Works building. In August 2016 Richard opened Goody Goody. A Tampa landmark since 1925 and closed since 2005, the iconic Goody Goody restaurant was reborn under Gonzmart s direction in Tampa s Hyde Park Village. Mr. Richard Gonzmart Richard learned the importance of giving back from his parents, Cesar and Adela Gonzmart. They provided financial and mentoring support to the University of South Florida in Tampa since the University s opening in They initiated the Latino Scholarship program in 1991 to assist deserving college-bound minority students at USF. He has also implemented the Cesar Gonzmart Memorial Golf Tournament, the Columbia Restaurant Community Harvest, the Richard s Run for Life and the Richard s Father s Day Family Walk/Jog. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for over 10 different organizations in the Tampa Bay Area such as the The Gonzmart Family Foundation, Cristo Rey Tampa High School, Tampa Bay Lightning Community Heroes Advisory Committee, and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Foundation, Inc. to name a few.
