1 Instructions for Caroline Scott Harrison Daughters of the American Revolution 2018 Scholarship Applications All applicants must be U.S. Citizens Students must have a minimum grade average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale Students must attend a four year undergraduate accredited college or university in Indiana Student may be male or female Deadline for applications is FEBRUARY 1, 2018 Each applicant must choose a Scholarship Essay Topic (see Scholarship Essay Topic file) and submit an essay with each scholarship Caroline Scott Harrison Scholarship applicants: Applicants must have a permanent residence in Marion County. (Where do you vote? That is considered your permanent residence.) They exhibited their patriotism in different ways. Choose one as the subject of the essay for your scholarship entry. Be sure your essay addresses all of these questions: 1. What role did your subject play in the history of our nation? 2. Give specific example(s) of this person s actions that had an impact on our nation. 3. He was the first person shot and killed in the historic event that became known as The Boston Massacre. He represents 5,000 African-American soldiers who fought for independence NATHAN HALE After graduating from Yale University, Hale became a teacher. When war brewed in the American colonies, he joined a Connecticut regiment and served in the siege of Boston. He was then captured by the British in New York City and hanged on charges of espionage JOHN HANCOCK Hancock was an 18th century U.S. merchant who was president of the Continental Congress and the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence BENJAMIN HARRISON Harrison, as an Indiana resident, served as a general in the Civil War.
