15 Pop receives Presidential Early Career Award Eric Pop was named a recipient of a Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their careers. Pop's research focuses on nanoscale transistors and memory elements utilizing graphene, carbon nanotubes, and phase-change materials. 15

18 New Imaging Technique Accurately Finds Cancer Cells, Fast Stephen Boppart leads a team of researchers that have demonstrated the novel microscopy technique nonlinear interferometric vibrational imaging (NIVI). This technique produces easyto-read, color-coded images of tissue, outlining clear tumor boundaries in a very short amount of time. 18
19 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois Second annual Power and Energy Conference at Illinois was held in February. Planned and executed by ECE students. Universities from across the Midwest, as well as industry leaders, participated. 19
20 IEEE PES/PELS Joint Student Chapter Wins Best Chapter Award The Illinois IEEE Power Engineering Society and Power Electronics Society (IEEE PES/PELS) Joint Student Chapter was awarded the IEEE Power Electronics Society Best Chapter. This year marks the first time that a student chapter has ever received the IEEE Power Electronics Society Best Chapter Award. 20
21 Shenoy wins International Graduate Achievement Award ECE graduate student Pradeep Shenoy was named the recipient of the 2010 Illinois International Graduate Achievement Award. The award is awarded annually to one Illinois graduate student for innovative international research and service abroad. Shenoy had performed research in China in 2008 and in India in
22 New Program: Engineer in Residence Allows students to interact with people who have had substantial success with an ECE degree or in an ECE-related field. At least one invited each semester. First was Michael McCorquodale (BSEE 97), founder of Mobius Microsystems, now part of Integrated Device Technology. 22
