2 PRESIDENT S REPORT: Val Samuelson (seen below with hat) Board meeting this Wednesday, 10 October, 5.30pm If you haven t paid your subs please see David Brady. A half year is acceptable. Read out the clarion for the District 9700 Vocational Excellence Awards: Nominations close 31st October 2012 This is will be the third year that District 9700 has presented Vocational Excellence Awards. In the past two years there have been five outstanding individuals who have received this prestigious award. This is an excellent opportunity for your Club to acknowledge a member of your community who has excelled in their vocation but the closing date for nominations is October 31st so if your Club is considering submitting a nomination now is the time to be working on that nomination. Award guidelines are available on the website and nominations must be submitted on the form also available on the district website. The District Vocational Excellence Committee will consider all the information provided on the Nomination Form and will make a recommendation to the District Governor. The selected awardees will receive their medal and certificate at the 2013 District Conference to be held in Leeton. Please carefully consider the Guidelines and assist your Club to complete the Nomination Form with as much information as possible. 3 tickets were distributed and John invited contributions for the third prize a cornucopia of goodies, including some toys from Denise and Lesley. Meeting at his factory in Fernleigh Road this Thursday 5.30pm. Denise Flockton reported there were thirty expressions of interest for next year s Lake event. There will be a meeting next Tuesday evening. ROTARY INFORMATION: Denise Flockton gave an outline of Rotary International in China 1919 first club chartered in Shanghai; 1924 Beijing Club chartered; clubs across China; Rotary activities halted; 1996 Beijing Club re-established as a fellowship group; Shanghai in 1997; 2001 Rotary International provisional status granted to both clubs; 2008 Beijing and Shanghai Clubs fully chartered; Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs agreed to the existence of these two clubs, providing the membership is by invitation only and restricted to current passport holders, senior management of multinational corporations, diplomatic personnel, scholars. Denise then went on to detail the work, projects and connections of the Beijing Rotary Club please check them out on the web. Crossfines: Gordon Moore, in a poised call to manners, fined all the men who persisted in wearing their hats during breakfast, and all the women who weren t wearing gloves to go with their hats. Getting into his stride he fined all those who agreed with daylight saving. FINES: $76.70 GUEST SPEAKER: David Gilbey introduced District 9700 Australian Rotary Health representative Mary Ann Kelly as a Registered Nurse who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga for five years. Born neartarcutta, in Borambola.

4 Mary Ann Kelly thanked Sunrise Rotary for the invitation to speak about Hat Day, saying she thought fondly of Sunrise where she attended her first make-up when a new Rotarian. Although her power point wasn t available, Mary Ann Kelly spoke convincingly of Australian Rotary Health and its goals: to encourage, promote, stimulate and aid medical and health research in Australai; to coordinate and manage ARH initiatives and community health projects; to promote, encourage and stimulate public interest in the prevention and treatment of ill health in Australia; and to generate new knowledge about health. (David Gilbey & Helen Allen, with hats, right) Mary Ann outlined ARH s previous grants and scholarships and some current research projects, focussing especially on mental health. She referred to the strategy of Rotary Clubs partnering with ARH to fund a PhD scholarship in a range of areas. She spoke about Indigenous scholarships, rural and remote medical and nursing scholarships as well as post disaster projects. Policy criteria were outlined and some types of fundraising mentioned for individuals and clubs. (Marie Wood & hat, left) Hat Day was moved from May to October to coincide with Mental Health Month and is designed to increase awareness of mental health: to stop keeping mental health under our hats. So far, $250,000 has been raised and $26 million has been allocated to mental health research and education. In questions and discussion, Noelene Hogan reminded the gathering that Sunrise Rotary had sponsored two mental health scholarships. Dennis Blackett asked how the money was raised and Mary Ann said it was mostly a matter of asking clubs to hold a fundraising event and one recent suggestion was to approach the MTC with some aspect of a Race Day, eg the Wagga Cup, being dedicated to fundraising. Sue McAlpin asked about the development of media releases, underlining some of the good mental health resources in Wagga, such as Headspace. In answer to Noelene s suggestion that the proceedings of today s fine session be allocated to ARH/Hat Day, President Val Samuelson (and others) suggested that a targeted fine session next week would yield more funds. Jo Wilson thanked Mary Ann saying how important the presentation was as she didn t know much of this information. She was particularly struck by the focus on young people s issues. 6 final drollery: you may have heard/seen this, but it still raises a laugh (with me): In America, a man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The store clerks called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital he was taken to. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clip board loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment. "Do you have health insurance?" she asked. He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance." The nun asked, "Do you have money in the bank?" He replied, "No money in the bank." "Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?" asked the irritated nun. He said, "I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun." The nun became agitated and announced loudly, "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God." The patient replied, "Perfect. Send the bill to my brother-in-law."
