I had the chance to work in the US for one summer in 2009 and to study in the UK as an exchange student in These overseas experiences were the best times and in a way, served to pave my road into the language profession. My personal interests in music and sports brought me awards, but more importantly, a group of loving friends. The process of practising and performing with a team was much more valuable to my development as a person. For my future career, I hope to become an interpreter on the international scene. I hope that with my own expertise, I will be able to make a difference to the world, even just a little bit. 4

Serving the community has developed my civil responsibility while benefiting both community and myself. The joy of helping those in need has informed my career aspirations. My participation in various extracurricular activities and internships has played an integral, irreplaceable part in my personal development during my years of study at PolyU. Through these activities, I was able to develop interpersonal skills as well as leadership skills that couldn t have been acquired from the classroom. Through many valuable extracurricular activities and a vibrant university life I have visited more than a dozen countries through international competitions, community services and internship programs. As I was socially developing myself, I have most importantly learnt who I am by finding and developing my strengths and improving on my weaknesses. The academic exchange to South Korea has also opened an opportunity to start a remarkable career at Samsung. The best chances for youth development can always be found within the University. Last year, I participated in the student exchange program and studied for a semester in the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Not only could I learn from the different education style in Australia, but also the living attitudes of Australians. Unlike the Chinese who live for enjoyment after they have retired, Australians enjoy every single day in their lives; they pursue high quality of life today while preparing for tomorrow. Their living philosophy would never have impacted me so much if I hadn t been immersed in this culture. I am grateful for having this wonderful experience and so proud of myself for taking action when I see a chance in front of me. My motto is You will always take more than you think if you are willing to give. Social Development 40

I feel happy to have been a part in some, including Mental Health Caring Project, Peer Mentoring Programme and Community Service Learning Award. It may be interesting that I found myself gaining and learning most regarding my psychological wellness from the internship programmes facilitated by PolyU. I am glad that I had chances to participate in different summer internship programmes in the past three years in leading cities in mainland China. The experience boosted my ability to adapt to demands, face changes and deal with challenges independently, and more importantly, with smiles. My future cannot possibly be smooth all along, but I believe I can walk through it with a smile and psychological well-being. My PolyU life has been fruitful, fulfilling and amazing. I can honestly say I don t have any regrets about these three years. Joining different extracurricular activities and being the ambassadors allowed me to expand my social network and develop various soft skills. I am now more than ready to step into the business world and continue learning and applying-like the university s motto. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to PolyU, ISE department and teachers for providing me with tones of opportunities, encouragement and support to be an all rounded student. Just a friendly reminder to those who are still getting lost but want to make a difference in PolyU life: Grasp every single opportunity and embrace it. Besides academic achievements, psychological development is also crucial for our allround success, especially when everyone is under great pressure from school and society. Participating in the personal development programs helped me build my core competence. The skills I learned from the program helped me a lot when I came across challenges during the past three years. To promote psychological health, I became a mental health ambassador. By introducing concepts and sharing, we aimed to arouse awareness of the importance of mental health and provide information on how to live healthier lives. The program not only gave me a great chance to share my experience, but also helped improve my psychological wellness. The fruitful life in PolyU has equipped me with a more positive attitude towards my future. The university provides a variety of platforms for us to participate in community services, I joined Community Outreach Merit Program which the Computing department runs and enjoyed every minute doing volunteering work. Last summer, I had the opportunity to serve in Cambodia. It was one of the most precious and unforgettable experiences I have ever had, it had changing me as a person, helping me reflect on the things I have and a giving me deeper understanding of the underprivileged. I have just started a 1-year placement program at The Hong Kong Jockey Club and I will continue serving through their volunteering programs because it is always an honour to be able to serve. In PolyU, ethics are taught with professional knowledge and students are encouraged show their integrity and morals in their lifetime. PolyU has provided me a lot of opportunities to make contact with vulnerable groups and even organize activities for them. Those experiences trained my communication skill and organization skill. Last summer, I had a chance to apply those skills in my WIE placement. I helped Noah s Ark organize a summer camp for the children from a Children s Home when I interned at Ma Wan Park Limited. These experiences have enriched my university life. It was PolyU that brought me the first taste of community service when I became a freshman here. From participant to organizer of community activities in four years, I have been really touched by those people's sweetest smiles. As a business-major, profit and efficiency are our eternal targets but as social worker expressing love for society, happiness becomes our only aspiration. What can just a student do for this society, what can all students do? Community service requires your responsibility more than academic capability and in offering this you will discover a more mature yourself. Maybe that is the essence of ethics; doing good in society. Before I entered PolyU, I had already planned what I wanted to achieve during my university life. I have worked as a summer intern in a Fund Management company in Shanghai, an audit firm in New York, and an insurance company in Hong Kong during my university life. Yes, being successful is not easy. But with good planning, strong determination and great devotion, nothing is impossible. Having struggled to decide between conducting research work and working in industry for my future career, I am glad that I had a chance to explore both before making any decision. In the summer of 2011, I was a summer intern in Oriented Product Service as well as a research assistant in the University of Southern Queensland. Both unique experiences demanded that I utilize the knowledge I had learnt from lectures. I truly understand that learning was not the difficult part, whether one could apply what had been learnt was the most critical thing to determine success in a career. When you know how to apply, you are not handling tasks as a layman anymore. 69 SPECIAL Portfolio of Student Achievement 2012

I m a practical dreamer and a change maker - I dare to dream. With numerous opportunities provided by ITC and PolyU, I share my ideas to the world through fashion and am getting closer to my goal of being a successful fashion designer. I dare to lead the change and be the change. Here at PolyU I have sharpened my leadership. Being part of the one of the largest student run organizations in the world like AIESEC, I have had the chance to tackle current issues and bring about the change in innovative ways. With my burning passion, I will continue to excel and make a difference. To live the dream, live the change. It is a great honour for me to be selected as a star student in the Intellectual domain. I strongly believe that an all-rounded person should learn from different perspectives and PolyU satisfied me by offering me a great deal of opportunities to learn in different ways, including internships and the exchange programme. Moreover, I would like to thank the work of SAO and my department, as they provided me with a lot of scholarships. From my perspective, the meaning of scholarships is not only to support my further study, but also to acknowledge my work and to encourage me to continuously improve. 77 SPECIAL Portfolio of Student Achievement 2012

I believe that as university students, we should not just sit in classrooms and learn only what is taught. I am thankful to PolyU because it has given me so much flexibility and opportunities to reach out and experience different parts of the world, and eventually helped me to fulfill my motto. These also helped me to build a brave heart and an open mind, which I believe will be an essential foundation for my further study and future career. As time goes by, it s a natural process to advance intellectually. However, this process has considerably accelerated during my four years in PolyU. I have learnt out of genuine passion and participation in all my areas of interest, both in-class and outside of the basic academic requirements. The business competitions enabled me to stand in the shoes of a developer and think critically about the feasibility of a seemingly crazy idea. The exchange program and outbound experiences initiated my probing into cultural differences, learning what was beneficial and appreciating the rest. I am proud to say that, This young lady has learnt to think on her own, which sets her apart from the population of little girls. Intellectual Development 78

Moster Associates Limited 2010/11 Aesthetics are one of the elements of design, but not the only thing to consider as a good design. The School of Design has given me a lot of opportunities to experience and apply design. Studying at SD is enjoyable, challenging and fruitful. Through various kinds of teaching and learning activities, I have had a chance to obtain professional knowledge and skills in an interactive and open-minded environment. It is my honor to be one of the students in the top international design school POLYU School of Design. In my words, Aesthetics are everywhere and the possibilities of design are sometimes unimaginable. I have loved drawing since I was a child. Once in a while, I think of my childhood it was the happiest time when I could draw everything I liked. I love to draw; that s why I studied visual art when I was in secondary school. Studying Environmental Design in PolyU has given me a new perspective on three-dimensional design. I understand that Environmental Design should be a dialogue between people and the environment, old and new, heritage and innovation. I appreciate every experience at PolyU and I am glad to have met so many great people in School of Design. 85 SPECIAL Portfolio of Student Achievement 2012

What most impressed me is that music has brought a group of fellow students together, who share the same interest, work hard for perfection, and dare to overcome challenges. I have gained valuable experience that I could not find elsewhere, and the memories will always remain in my heart. Such experience has also helped me develop my goals and reinforce my dedication to the arts, which has inspired me to pursue my postgraduate study in arts management, hoping to share the beauty of arts with others. I am so honored to be named as a star in the Aesthetics category. PolyU has offered us plenty of amazing opportunities to be involved in various activities, both academically and non-academically. I have joined several student-centered clubs including PolyU English Drama Club and PolyU Hall Choir. Equipping me with the latest knowledge with superb facilities, I would say the learning experience at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing has been one of the most meaningful and inspiring journeys of my university life. To me, PolyU is a key to the outside world. I was given a lot of chances to improve my global outlook. I was an exchange student to Cornell University, where I learnt essential soft skills through communicating with others in a proximate context. Through interning as a product developer for Nike Hong Kong, I have utilized my talents to accomplish tasks. I gained operational experience through which I had great improvement in decisionmaking. All in all, PolyU has offered me valuable opportunities to enrich myself and achieve my dream. It provides me with a strong back up so that I can keep on giving back to society. University, where you can find lots of opportunities and dreams, is a place for students to transform from pupa to butterfly and initiative is always the key to the transformation. I am glad that I participated in several exchange programs and tours during my university life that broadened my network in a great extent and enhanced my cultural appreciation in a way that I had never imagined. Learning is not bound to textbooks only but by exposing yourself to a place you are unfamiliar with you gain knowledge from interpersonal skills, time management and problem-solving. Resplendent, glittering and unforgettable that is my university life and yours can be even more amazing only if you grasp every learning opportunity in your university life. 91 SPECIAL Portfolio of Student Achievement 2012
