Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. Theta Nu Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., in keeping with the traditions and goals of our founders the target audience for this particular scholarship are African American Males. To: Applicants From: Scholarship Committee We are pleased to have you apply for the Alpha Phi Alpha Scholarship from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,. Scholarships will be awarded to those male students who have a proven record of outstanding scholarship, leadership, community service and financial need. Two one-time scholarships in the amount of $500 and $1,000 (to be distributed in two payments in fall and spring semesters) along with other possible awards will be available for the collegiate academic years. Applicants selected as finalists will be interviewed before our evaluation committee on April 26, A fifteen (15) to Twenty (20) minute scheduled interviews will begin at 5:30 pm at the Oliver Green Alpha Multipurpose Center located at reet, Every application must contain the following information: 1. A completed application form 2. A copy of your official school transcript 3. Three (3) letters of recommendation, one must be from guidance counselor 4. Typed 2 page essay of future goals 5. Scholarships will be sent to the student upon proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university. Please make certain that the student provide a valid address as this will be the primary method of communication between the applicant and the scholarship committee. Recipients of scholarship must provide an Enrollment Verification Certificate from the college or university before scholarship checks will be issued. 6 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Alpha Phi Alpha is the world s oldest intercollegiate, multicultural fraternity founded by African-American Men. The fraternity s motto is First of all, servants of all, we shall transcend all. For 105 years, Alpha Phi Alpha has answered the call to leadership. In all walks of life and at all times in its history, Alpha men have set the standards for excellence and service. You have been asked to provide a letter of reference for a person who is seeking the Alpha Phi Alpha Scholarship. As a person who knows them very well, your letter of reference will be a very important part of the scholarship selection process. Please give candid and complete answers to the following questions and make sure that you have identified the candidate by name and signed your reference before sending it in. PLEASE NOTE THE CANDIDATE SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE CONTENT OF THESE LETTERS WITHOUT PRIOR CONSENT OF THE WRITER. Address the student s academic performance or leadership in extracurricular engagements in detail with examples. Provide a context in which you know the applicant and what length of time. Discuss why the student would be a strong candidate for the Alpha Phi Alpha Scholarship. Be candid but not negative.
