The fall season has arrived and there's no better way to celebrate than with a concert! KHS Choir and Orchestra will be hosting a fall concert TODAY, October 5th at 6:30pm in the theater for only $4! Tickets are for sale from any choir or orchestra student, the student store, or from Mr. Martensen in room 192 Hope to see you there! Any students who bought pictures from O'Connor photography they are here!!! Stop by activities office to pick them up during snack or lunch only! Boys soccer tryouts October st. from 3:30 to 6. Many campuses offer such days to interested students and their families during this time of year. Some out-of-state schools hold informational programs locally, so even if you plan on going to school out-of-state, you may want to watch for those announcements, too. It s a great way to see and learn about institutions, first hand! Seniors: Are you applying to a University of California for the Fall? You can begin submitting your applications in November, but if you d like a little help, there will be an UC Application Workshop on Tuesday, November 1 st in Computer Lab 238. Stop by anytime after 12:45, the workshop will end at 3:30 PM. Calling All Poets! The City of Palmdale has announced a Walk on Words Poetry Contest to students of all ages. The winning poem will be stamped into concrete at Marie Kerr Park as part of the citywide Walk on Words Poetry Project. For details, log on to their website or stop by the Scholarship Wall in the College/Career Center. Deadline is October 12 th. Attention All College Bound Seniors: The Guidance Counselors will be offering a college application workshop on Tuesday, November 15 th. If you are applying to a college or university for the Fall and need assistance in completing the online application, you might want to come to this workshop! The workshop will be held in Computer Lab 238 after 5 th period until 3:30 PM. The California Firefighter Joint Apprentice Committee is holding a series of upcoming Firefighter Expos designed to introduce students to a career in firefighting. The expo (and barbeque) is free. For dates & locations, stop by the College/Career Center! The University of Southern California s Roski School of Art & Design has announced its Fall Open House on Sunday, October 30 th. Students interested in learning more about what an Art degree from USC has to offer are encouraged to attend. Details are posted in the College/Career Center.
3 Cal State University Chico has announced its Preview Day for college-bound students. Located in a true college town, CSU Chico s Open House will be held on Saturday, October 22 nd and includes campus tours, admission workshops for future freshmen, student organizations, scholarship and career placement opportunities and a city tour on a student trolley. Visit for details or the College/Career Center. Duke University is a private research university in North Carolina. Students interested in learning about Duke University should check out the College Information Wall in the College/Career Center for their schedule of local recruitment programs coming in the next weeks. Are you considering attending a Performing or Visual Art College? Do you know the options? If not, you may want to attend the Performing & Visual Arts College Fair at UCLA in October. Schools specializing in Dance, Music, Liberal Arts, Photography, Theater, and more will be featured. Also available at this fair will be a pre-fair workshop (one hour prior to the actual fair) which will help students and families prepare to meet face-to-face with admission representatives. Attention Juniors and Seniors: Representatives (and former KHS students) from California State University, Long Beach will be here Friday, October 14 th to speak about life, admission, scholarships & special programs at CSULB. Tufts University in Massachusetts has announced two Open Houses for students interested in degrees in Arts & Sciences, or Engineering. Through their VOICES program, prospective students will experience life at Tufts campus for free and may even receive travel assistance to participate. Juniors and Seniors who are interested in applying to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, may wish to attend one of their upcoming Pepperdine Preview. 4 The Horatio Alger Association is looking for college-bound seniors who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, critical financial need, a 2.0 or higher GPA, and a desire to contribute to society. Scholarships up to $25,000 will be awarded. For more information or to submit your application go to scholars.horatioalger.org. DEADLINE is Oct. 25 Davidson College in North Carolina is looking for students for consideration of their John Montgomery Belk Scholarship based upon the student s outstanding academic achievement, stellar character, intellectual promise, leadership, and service commitment. This is a full-ride scholarship to Davidson and comes with additional $3,000 stipend! Interested seniors should see Mrs. Centonze in the College/Career Center. Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri is looking for nominees for the Danforth Scholars Program. If you would like to be considered for nomination and plan to apply to Washington University, please see your counselor or Mrs. Centonze in the College/Career Center. Danforth Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have shown leadership and academic excellence, as well as a desire for a rigorous academic college curriculum. Details are in the College/Career Center. Deadline for nomination is November 15. Seniors! Get on the scholarship train! AES Engineers is pleased to be able to continue providing $500 scholarships to high school seniors (regardless of courses being studied) who meet certain criteria. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. Students must submit an essay of 500 to 1000 words in answer to the two questions that are posted on their site: Deadline for entry: October 6. Colgate-Palmolive has announced a scholarship opportunity for Hispanic seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better and community service. The Make the U (Haz la U) scholarship will be awarding 31 educational scholarships this year. To apply, go to Deadline: Oct 15 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is offering four-year, merit-based scholarships to well-rounded, outstanding Seniors. If you are involved in your community, extra-curricular activities, and have at least a 3.0 GPA, you should apply for this scholarship. 150 scholarships of $20,000 each will be awarded this year. Applications are available on-line only at: cocacolascholars.org Deadline: Oct 31 Boston University, in Boston, Massachusetts, has announced its Boston University Trustee Scholarship Competition. This scholarship covers full undergraduate tuition to their university. Top students interested in applying for this full-ride scholarship should see the Scholarship Wall in College/Career Center. Deadline for registration is December 1 st. The Elks National Foundation is offering the Most Valuable Student Scholarship to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide. Scholarship amounts range from $4,000 to $50,000. Judging criteria is based upon scholarship, leadership and financial need. The local Elks Club gives scholarships to KHS seniors each year at Senior Awards Night. Recipients this year will be chosen from those who apply to this national scholarship, so remember - you ve got to apply if you want to win! 5 The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is offering scholarships of up to $40,000 a year to seniors who have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above and will enter a four-year college full-time in the fall of Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need, and have received SAT critical reading/math scores of or an ACT score of 26 or higher. For all the details, please log on to: Deadline is November 30. The American Music and Drama Academy, with campuses in both New York and Los Angeles, has announced local auditions and scholarships for students interested in attending their performing arts institutions. AMDA offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and two-year Conservatory Programs, on-campus housing and scholarships for those interested in acting, dance, music and performing arts. For details, see the College Information Wall in the College/Career Center! The Asian & Pacific Islander Scholarship Fund presents scholarships to college-bound seniors of Asian, Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian ethnicity with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.7, who are the first in their family to attend college, and have financial need. A letter of recommendation is required. Scholarship awards range from one-time $2,500 awards to multi-year $20,000 awards. Check them out at: or on the Scholarship Wall in the College/Career Center. Deadline for application is January 11 th. The Ron Brown Scholars Program is given to African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. If you are a senior who excels academically, exhibits leadership potential, participates in community service and can demonstrate financial need, this is for you! The California Teachers Association is sponsoring an art and essay competition for individuals or groups.
