Volunteer Blast #2 Dear Mission of Mercy Volunteer, We would like to thank each of you for taking the time away from your families, practices and other interests to volunteer at the Michigan Dental Association Foundation Mission of Mercy. Volunteers are the heart of this event. Although you will be working hard, I know you will enjoy every minute of it. You will be amazed by the gratitude the patients will show for your efforts. While we anticipate a large number of patients, it is not about the numbers. We want to alleviate pain for as many patients as we can while providing quality dental care in a safe environment; and make it enjoyable for both patients and the volunteers. We feed you breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stay or come back in the evenings for dinners; share your stories of the day. Saturday we will celebrate you our volunteer, with a special dinner, video/slide show and totals of our contribution to the community. So, have fun, be flexible and take home a memory! Yes, free volunteer parking will be located in lots 1-7 on the campus of Calvin College. The Volunteer Entrance is located on the west side of the Hoogenboom Center (follow the signs). Campus Parking Map What Should I Wear? Be comfortable. For Friday and Saturday, Dental/Medical professionals will be provided with a scrub top and general volunteers will be provided with a t-shirt, with the MOM logo on it. We ask that you wear the shirt provided as it helps us quickly identify volunteers versus patients. You may wear any type of pants or shorts that you will be comfortable in. The Tennis and Track Building is not air-conditioned but large overhead fans will keep it comfortable. For Dental professionals producing splash or splatter we recommend you bring a clinic coat or use a disposable gown available at Central Supply. Comfortable shoes are a must! For some, your day will be spent walking or standing. For your safety, no open-toe shoes are allowed on the clinic floor. This means no sandals and absolutely no flip flops. If you are working multiple days you will be provided with a shirt for each day you are working.\

4 Will dental instruments, equipment and supplies be available or should I bring my own? Dental instruments and handpieces will be provided. (Click here to see list of instruments Mercy/Forms/Protocol%20Sterilization%20-%20ADCF.pdf?ver= There are amalgamators and curing lights available, one for every two restorative stations and one cavitron for each hygiene station. Dental restorative materials, burs, anesthetics and disposable dental supplies will also be available. The clinic is latex-free so latex-free gloves will be dispensed. Those who prefer to work with their own instruments are welcome to bring them along as it may make the experience more enjoyable. Please feel free to bring your own STERILE instruments, clearly labeled with your name. There is a process in place to help ensure you get your personal instruments back after they have been sterilized. If possible, please bring your instruments in cassettes. Instruments not in cassettes will be individually bagged. The sterilization department will process personal instruments separate from the MOM instruments. There will be one portable dental stool for each work station but feel free to bring your own. There will be a folding chair available for dental assistants; however, assistants wanting a chairside stool should bring their own, CLEARLY labeled with your name. What Else Should I Bring? YOU MUST BRING SAFETY GLASSES! Bring any special equipment you may need such as headlamps and magnifying eyewear. Be sure they are properly labeled with your identification. A nice variety of burs will be provided but if there is one you just can t live without bring it. Curing light, since there are a limited number available. There will be a portable dental stool for each dentist and hygienist but feel free to bring your own. Your DEA number for prescription writing purposes. Your patience, flexibility, sense of humor and the ability to make the best of any situation. What Not to Bring Please leave your personal belongings safely at home or locked in the trunk of your car. We do not have a secured area for you to leave them at the Hoogenboom Center. We realize many people like their favorite morning coffee and will bring their own in a large size cup to drink.

5 We suggest you leave that at home as well as only bottled water is allowed on the clinic floors. We will provide coffee and other beverages in the Volunteer Lounge, but it must stay in the Lounge. You will be provided with a pouch lanyard for your name tag. It has a secured zipper section for keys as well as space for a cell phone. Department Protocols and Patient Flow Due to the large scale operation of this event it is important that Department Protocols be followed closely. Please review the Protocol(s) for the departments you will be working in as well as the Infection Control Protocol and Medical Waste Protocol. Protocols.Contact your department lead with any questions you have about a specific area s operations. It is well worth reading. Will I get CE Credit for my volunteer activity? Continuing Education will give given to those licensed dental professionals (DDS, RDH, RDA) who provide direct patient care. CE credit vouchers will be issued in the Volunteer Lounge immediately following your shift(s). Smoking This is the policy from Calvin College. Smoking on campus is permitted only in a limited number of designated outdoor areas. These designated areas are clearly marked by appropriate signage and cigarette butt receptacles. Smoking is prohibited inside all campus buildings, including all residence halls. For the purpose of this policy, smoking is defined as the act of lighting, smoking, carrying a lighted or smoldering cigar, and inhaling e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and the like. Emergency Contact Information We recommend you bring your cell phone if you need to provide someone with an emergency phone number as there is not a general phone number to reach us onsite.
