You are expected to consult this on a regular basis. COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE Nurs 623 Pathophysiology Applied to Advanced Practice Nursing COURSE DESCRIPTION Normal developmental physiology and pathophysiology concepts relevant to the nursing domain will be addressed with emphasis on clinical nursing problems of the major body systems. Normal growth and development throughout the lifespan will be examined in terms of relevance to pathophysiological changes. Concepts emphasized will reflect human responses to disease processes. CREDIT AND TIME ALLOTMENT 4 (4,0). This course is comprised of four (4) semester credits of didactic knowledge. PREREQUISITE/CONCURRENT This course may be taken concurrently or after N610 and concurrently or before the final capstone practicum course. OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE This course will assist the advanced practice nurse in assessing, managing, and promoting the health status of clients over time and
2 through all age groups in states of wellness, acute illness, and chronicity. Emphasis will be placed on pathophysiology concepts of human responses to illness. The course will further the acquaintance of the student to a variety of scientific journals and online resources addressing developmental physiological and pathophysiological research that advanced practice nurses can use in health promotion and illness prevention. MAJOR THEORISTS AND IDEA INFLUENCES Theorists in physiology, endocrinology, biology, nursing, and related disciplines are utilized to convey course content. Research and theoretically-based publications serve as the foundation for the lifespan developmental perspective of the course. EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES Compare and contrast physiological changes over the lifespan. Analyze the relationship between normal physiology and pathophysiological phenomena produced by disease across the lifespan. Synthesize and apply current research-based knowledge regarding pathophysiological manifestations in selected disease states. Describe methods to systemically analyze pathophysiological outcomes to selected interventions. Analyze factors other than pathophysiological mechanisms that may contribute to clinical presentation. TOPICAL CONTENT Human Responses to Disease Alterations within the following systems: Immunological, Pulmonary, Cardiovascular, Renal, Digestive, Endocrine, Neurological INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES Methods include on-line resources, PowerPoint presentations, on-line discussions, reading assignments, interaction with faculty/peers, discussion of client case studies, library research synthesis paper related to the interrelationship of developmental and physiologic changes and
3 pathophysiology concepts. REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE 1. Participation in-online discussions demonstrating analysis of literature relating to the specific concepts within each module. There is one discussion per module. Each module has a specific due date for your initial response to the case study, and a specific due date for one response to a fellow student. This response to a fellow student should be a critical analysis of their posting, which stimulates further discussion from the group. You will be expected to complete a self-assessment (located in the exam section) for each discussion, which will comprise your grade. 2. Pathophysiological concept paper. The purpose of this paper is to enable the student to identify and discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms in a selected illness. The paper will contain two components: 1. A detailed in-depth discussion of the pathophysiological mechanisms and responses occurring within an illness. 2. A detailed schema (a single diagram). This diagram illustrates the papers pathophysiological discussion. The schema will show the interrelationships between the mechanisms. The schema (and body of the paper) will reflect the process of the pathological responses that occur with the chosen illness. Specific components to be addressed within this project include: 3. Successful completion of exams. There will four (4) on-line examinations. These exams are time-limited and are offered during a specified time-frame. In cases where exams are to be taken after the allotted time frame, arrangements by the student must be made before the end of the specified time-frame with your course instructor. All exams must be taken in the presence of a proctor. This proctor must meet the guidelines of the College of Nursing and University of South Dakota policies. 4. Completion of one discussion question summary. Which is worth 20 points and provides a medium for the student to summarize the discussion questions and responses of other students. SDSU ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY South Dakota State University has taken a strong and clear stand regarding Academic Dishonesty. The consequence of Academic
4 Dishonesty ranges from Disciplinary Probation to Expulsion. The full policies are found in Chapter 1 of the Student Code (01:10:23:01-1:10:23:04) within the Student Policy Manual. A student charged with Academic Dishonesty who wishes to appeal that charge may follow the appeals Procedure outlined in Chapter 2 of the student Policy Manual (Academic Appeals and Classroom Standards) or contact the Vice President for Academic Affairs Office, AD 203, phone number Any evidence of cheating or dishonesty will result in a zero for the test and may also result in an "F" for the course, according to the discretion of the instructor. DISABILITIES STATEMENT Students who need special accommodations should inform the instructor or contact the Disability Service Officer, 110 West Hall or Call UNIVERSITY CALENDAR Important dates such as drop/add, withdrawal, and official holidays. MAKE-UP POLICY Because circumstances surrounding our busy lives do occasionally cause conflict with the due dates in this course, work is sometimes submitted late or exams must be rescheduled. Although the instructor highly discourages this type of work, she acknowledges that these circumstances may occur. Therefore, all make-up work will be based on individual circumstances and negotiated between student and instructor. Call your instructor prior to the due date to negotiate for make-up. Any exam which is not taken at the same time as the rest of the class, will be a different version than the rest of the class took. METHODS OF EVALUATION Grading Scale A = % B = 90-81% C = 80-71% No grade of C or below can be accepted in a nursing course for application toward the Master of Science degree in nursing. Under Board of Regents and University policy, student academic performance shall be evaluated solely on an academic basis and students should be free to take reasoned exception to the data or views offered in any course of study. Students who believe that an academic evaluation is unrelated to academic standards but is related instead to judgment of their personal opinion or conduct should first contact the instructor of the course.
