The average for other cases is 3 days Maximum flexibility in meeting requests for specialist consultation: 14 days Minimum surgical delays: 30 days Excellent average waiting time in A&E: 7 minutes Maximum speed between cancer diagnosis and treatment (breast cancer 19 days, colon cancer 14 days and lung cancer 12 days) HEALTHCARE RESULTS (13) Rate of return to A&E within 72 hours: 3.4% Hospital readmission rate within 30 days: 5.1% Average waiting time in A&E: 7 minutes 12
15 QUALITY AND PATIENT SAFETY (13) The implementation of quality assurance policies is a clear trend in the industry. Safety procedures are widely used. More than 95% of centres have already implemented the surgical checklist or are in the process of doing so. Within 48 hours of admission, the survival rate of patients admitted for heart attacks is 97% (within the normal range in European hospitals). Within 48 hours of admission, the rate of hip replacement surgery is 94%. The rate of endoscopies performed under deep sedation is 80%. Seeking opportunities for growth through continual assessments 13
16 Private Healthcare Results and Indicators Private healthcare contributes to quality of life in Spain, and its users regard it in a very favourable light OVERALL QUALITY OF CARE (14) In all, 83% of Spanish citizens are knowledgeable about private healthcare because they use both systems. Overall, 77% rate private healthcare as well above average. Satisfaction rates increase the more this system is used. The overall opinion of quality of care is very good. QUALITY OF SERVICES AND PROFESSIONALS (14) (Rated on a scale from 1 to 10) 5 out of every 10 of those insured have been admitted at some point: 8.6 Treatment received from medical personnel at outpatient clinics: out of every 10 people have used the A&E services: out of every 10 of those insured have been to a specialist consultation and 6 out of every 10 have been to a primary care consultation, contributing to a quality-ofcare rating of 7.7 Feedback from users is the most important 89% of people who have private insurance would recommend using the private healthcare system 14
17 Forwardlooking approach to private healthcare A shared future in an integrated healthcare system There are few occasions that offer us the right economic, social and scientific climate to conduct a global and in-depth analysis of the shape our national healthcare system will take five years from now; even fewer are the opportunities to do so on the basis of specialised criteria for the most representative groups of healthcare stakeholders in Spain. Private healthcare plays an important role in ensuring sustainability and patient access to the healthcare system, and it cooperates with public healthcare through a range of participation mechanisms. This report casts light on certain considerations which on analysis, discussion and assessment in the relevant fields might help to facilitate synergies and foster collective will towards a shared objective: TO ENSURE THE SUSTAINABILITY, QUALITY, COHESION, EQUALITY AND EFFICIENCY OF THE SPANISH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.
