Curse Descriptin Students will be integrated daily int the emergency department teams and will serve as the primary prvider (under the direct supervisin f attending physicians) fr patients seeking care in the Children s Emergency Department. The department is staffed by bard certified pediatric emergency medicine specialists. The Children s Dallas Emergency Department is the pediatric trauma center fr Dallas Cunty. Gals Objectives Assessment Methds Patient Care: Medical students must be able t prvide patient care that is cmpassinate, apprpriate, and effective fr the treatment f health prblems and the prmtin f health. Medical Knwledge: Medical students shuld demnstrate knwledge f established and evlving bimedical, clinical, epidemilgical, and scial behaviral sciences, as well as the applicatin f this knwledge t patient care. Quality f Medical Recrds entries Skills evaluatin frm direct bservatin. Each student is required t create a case presentatin and t present it t the faculty and fellws n the last Wednesday f the rtatin. It is recmmended that students present an interesting case they encuntered during their rtatin. Methds f Instructin Didactic: Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellw s Cnference Fellw s Cnference ccurs every Wednesday frm in the pediatric emergency medicine department cnference lcated n the 2nd flr f the Bright Building. These weekly cnferences prvide educatinal pprtunities t faculty, fellws, residents, and medical students. Didactics n tpics in pediatric emergency medicine and lectures n research methdlgy and study designs are given by faculty and fellws. Simulatin Center Students will wrk with high fidelity simulatin mannequins t practice case scenaris and prcedures related t adult and pediatric emergency medicine. The simulatin center is lcated n the 3rd flr f the L building in rm 213. Students will cver the fllwing bjectives: Basic cardipulmnary resuscitatin (CPR) fr the pediatric ppulatin One persn CPR Tw persn CPR Management f cmmn pediatric dysrhythmias Supraventricular tachycardia Pulseless Electrical Activity Pediatric airway management Bag Mask Ventilatin Nn invasive airway management Invasive airway management Respiratry Emergencies Brnchilitis Asthma Pneumnia Shck Management Fluid resuscitatin Trauma evaluatins and management Primary and secndary assessments Case Presentatin Each student is required t create a case presentatin and t present it t the faculty and fellws n the last Wednesday f the rtatin. It is recmmended that students present an interesting case they encuntered during their rtatin. Clinical: 14 clinical shifts in the Pediatric Emergency Department Page 3 f 5

4 Clinical Shifts: AM shift is PM shift is ½ AM shifts/ ½ PM shifts at least 4 weekend shifts (Fri, Sat, r Sun) 2 x 4 hur prcedure shifts where the student s sle respnsibility is t perfrm prcedures MS4 will wrk under the supervisin f an attending physician in the pediatric emergency medicine department as a sub intern. He r she will assume the respnsibility f patient care and present directly t the attending n duty MS4 will perfrm basic prcedures as it relates t patient care in the pediatric emergency department. He r she will wrk under the supervisin f the attending n duty. MS4 will be required t submit a prcedure lg f all patient encunters during the elective. III. Overview f Student Respnsibilities Demnstrate knwledge f disease pathphysilgy in the acutely ill r injured pediatric patients. Expand clinical knwledge fr the assessment f the acutely ill r injured. Explain the resuscitative and stabilizatin prcess fr acutely ill r injured patients. Demnstrate knwledge in medical management f the acutely ill r injured patient. Sharpen skills necessary fr establish patient rapprt and trus.t Enhance their assessment skills invlving invasive and nn invasive therapeutic and diagnstic prcedures pertinent t the medical care f critically ill and injured patients that present t the emergency department. IV. Methd f Evaluatin f Students and Requirements Evaluatin frms will be submitted t the attending physician n duty upn the cmpletin f each shift in the emergency department. The evaluatin frms shuld be placed in the metal bx in the main emergency department labeled MS4 Evaluatins. There shuld be a ttal f 14 evaluatins: apprximately ne fr each shift in the department. This evaluatin assesses the student s ability t d the fllwing: Recgnize ill appearing children Demnstrate medical knwledge regarding cmmn pediatric prblems Enthusiastically seek ut additinal knwledge t enhance his r her medical knwledge and prcedural skills Accurately and succinctly present patient histries and physical exams t medical prfessinals Demnstrate prfessinalism Each student is required t create a case presentatin and t present it t the emergency department faculty and fellws in the pediatric emergency medicine department cnference rm (Bright Building, 2 nd Flr). He r she will be evaluated by the faculty and fellws. These presentatins will be given n the last Wednesday f the rtatin. Students will be evaluated n their perfrmance during high fidelity simulatin scenaris. A cmpsite evaluatin will be cmpleted fr each student. This evaluatin is based n the fllwing: 1) Evaluatins by the faculty during emergency department shifts 2) Evaluatins by the faculty and fellws fr case presentatins Page 4 f 5
