1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Post Number: Location: Department: Tenure: Grade: Salary: Accountable to: Mental Health Mentor ND017XX Llandaff & Cyncoed Campus Student Services Casual 6AB per hour plus 18%annual leave Mental Health Mentoring Coordinator This job description is indicative, not prescriptive, and the balance of duties will be in accordance with the contract of employment. Role Summary: This is a key post that will contribute to the ambitions of the University s new Strategic Plan 2017/ /23. To work on a 1:1 basis with students with a range of mental health issues providing practical support and self-help strategies to enable students to manage their condition and successfully engage with their studies. The role will also involve working collaboratively with other professional colleagues within wellbeing and educational support services to ensure students with mental health issues are offered the most appropriate support interventions. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 1. To work with students on a 1:1 basis implementing support recommendations from their DSA Needs Assessment Report, along with relevant support recommendations from care or support plans from statutory health and/or mental health services. 2. To support students to develop strategies and techniques to self-manage their mental health condition(s).
2 3. To provide practical support to enable students to access their studies. This may involve support with motivation, organisation, managing the impact of medication, focus and concentration issues, establishing realistic study patterns, managing issues around travel/transport, accessing the campus etc. 4. To effectively manage and prioritise a caseload of students with mental health issues recording accurate case notes on the university s electronic case management system. 5. To be able to recognise signs in students of disengagement with studies and/or a decline in mental health and take appropriate action. 6. To liaise regularly with other colleagues within wellbeing, educational support and wider Student Services teams to ensure a consistent approach is maintained regarding the support offered and the needs of the student are met appropriately. 7. To input into any communications with statutory mental health services via members of the wellbeing advisory team regarding student support needs and/or wellbeing concerns. 8. To report any concerns regarding a students ability to access the academic environment or student wellbeing or safety concerns to advisory staff within the Wellbeing Service. 9. To maintain appropriate professional boundaries within the context of the role. 10. To engage with regular supervision sessions and reviews of mentor caseload with the Mentoring Co-ordinator. 11. To regularly review the support being offered, identifying any additional needs and offering support or referral as appropriate. 12. To keep timesheets and accurate contact records of interactions with the student for DSA payment and audit purposes. 13. To work within university policies such as lone working etc. 14. To monitor and evaluate personal development needs in order to ensure that the professional requirements of the post are met, undertaking relevant training as necessary. 15. To work as part of the Wellbeing Service and undertake any other duties which may be reasonably requested by the Deputy Wellbeing Service Manager.
