1 Hawke s Bay District Health Board Position Profile / Terms & Conditions Position holder (title) Reports to (title) Department / Service Purpose of the position Vision Hearing Technician Team Leader, Child Health Programme Professional Accountability to Charge Audiologist Child Health Team To provide quality hearing and vision screening services to children and youth. To provide quality newborn hearing screening service, if applicable. To ensure and prioritise a focus on patient safety and quality relating to care and processes within the Child Health Team. Delivery of organisational KPI s including relevant MOH target, financial budgets and service plans. To recognise and support the delivery of the Hawkes Bay Health sector vision Working Relationships Internal External Audiology services Ophthalmologists Orthoptist Otolaryngologists Child Health Team Ear Nurse Specialist Maternity services Children & families Newborn babies and parents Primary health providers / GPs School and Early Childhood Education Centre personnel Optometrists Ophthalmologists Dimensions Challenges & Problem solving This position involves working autonomously within education, Te Kohanga Reo and community settings. This position requires a high degree of flexibility and cultural responsiveness.

3 Key Accountabilities COMPETENT CLINICAL PRACTICE Provides hearing & vision screening on pre school and school aged children according to National and local protocols. If applicable, provides Newborn hearing according to national and local protocols Ensure parental permission for screening and communicates the results. Maintains equipment to standards and has ready source of supplies. Uses age and cultural appropriate tecniciques/language to support screening. Evidenced by statistics documentation. Documentation meets HBDHB documentation standards. Completes New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Vision and Hearing Screening Strand. If applicable, completes New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Newborn Hearing Screening Strand. Annual competency assessment and review by HBDHB Charge Audiologist and Orthoptist/Ophthalmologist TEAM WORK A positive interactive attitude is displayed. Maintains strong internal working relationships. Support and advice is sought when necessary. Develops and maintains communication with community agencies and support networks. Support is offered to mentor student nurses, or allied support staff. Demonstrated responsibility and commitment to working in a team. The Vision Hearing Technician s activities are planned in consultation with other relevant team members. The Vision Hearing Technician participates in team and service meetings. Participates in peer review and supervsion groups. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY Displays commitment through actively supporting all health and safety initiatives. Ensures all staff/colleagues maintain adequate safety standards on the job through consultation, training and supervision. Ensures own and others safety at all times. Complies with policies, procedures and safe systems of work. Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion. Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation. Evidence of participation in health and safety activities. Demonstrates support of staff/colleagues to maintain safe systems of work. Evidence of compliance with relevant health and safety policies, procedures and event reporting. MANAGEMENT To plan and manage work effectively and efficiently to provide excellent customer service. Prepared to be flexible as customer needs arise. Schedules appointments, enters data, and maintains records and record systems to a high standard. Special screening projects are planned with other health workers.. A work schedule is developed in consultation and cooperation with other Vision Hearing Technicians to ensure the inclusion of all early childhood centres, Te Kohanga Reo and schools in the programme. All relevant early childhood centres, school staff and appropriate health service personnel are notified of the programme as per policy. Alterations to the programme are notified to appropirate personnel at the earliest opportunity. Key Competencies

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY National and Hawke s Bay District Health Board s professional standards (ie legislative, professional, contractual, ethical and organisational) are met. The risk of harm to consumers, staff and others is minimised. Customers have confidence in the employee s standard of delivery of care. Maintain skill, knowledge, expertise and competencey through ongoing training and education. Gain and maintain competency in New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Vision and Hearing Screening Strand and if applicable, the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Newborn Hearing Screening Strand. Completes annual competency assessment and review by HBDHB Charge Audiologist and Orthoptist/Ophthalmologist. Receive professional development relevant to the screening processes through attendance at national training seminars. Complete training in MOE and MOH B4SC databases Evidence is available in Child Health Team Quality Improvement Programme audits. Consumer feedback. Available opportunities to increase skill and knowledge base are taken, in consulation with Team Leader Participates in and contributes to inservice education and professional meetings

5 Essential and Desirable Criteria: Qualifications / Skills / Experience Essential Treaty of Waitangi Responsiveness (cultural safety) Qualifications (eg, tertiary, professional) Business / Technical Skills (eg, computing, negotiating, leadership, project management) Experience (technical and behavioural) Demonstrates the ability to include cultural safety of the health consumer when relating to care and processes within the Service. Demonstrates ability to apply the Treaty of Waitangi within the Service. Ability to work in Te Kohanga Reo setting Minimum Level 2 NCEA or equivilent. It is requirement to gain New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Vision and Hearing Screening Strand within one year of commencement of position. If applicable, it may also be a requirement to gain the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level 3), Newborn Hearing Screening Strand. Computing and data entry skills. Ability to maintain effective records. Current unendorsed drivers licence. Recruitment Details Position Title Vision Hearing Technician Hours of Work Salary & Employment Agreement Coverage 32 hours per fortnight In accordance with the Multi Employer Collective Agreement (MECA) $36,571 to $55,165 gross per annum according to qualifications and experience pro rata for hours worked.
