4 Worker safety advocate named to head fed OSHA Announcement signals stricter enforcement of workplace safety laws By Alexandra Berzon Wed, Apr 8, 2009 (3:50 p.m.) Editor Note: Has Strong Background In Labor Organizations Jordan Barab, a prominent worker safety advocate and a senior policy adviser overseeing worker safety legislation for the House Education and Labor Committee, will become the acting head of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced Wednesday afternoon. Barab will also become the deputy assistant secretary for OSHA. The announcement signaled a clear change in direction for the agency towards stricter enforcement of workplace safety laws.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 564 workplace homicides in 2005 in the United States, out of a total of 5,702 fatal work injuries. (Almost 1 out of 10)

59 APRIL 1, 2008 POLICE: 2 DEAD, 1 INJURED IN NORTH CAROLINA WORKPLACE SHOOTING LOUISBURG, N.C. Two people are dead and a third is injured after an early morning shooting at a business in the town of Louisburg, northeast of Raleigh, police said. The shooting was apparently part of a domestic dispute. Louisburg police chief Rick Lassiter told WRAL-TV that a man and a woman are dead, and the man appears to have been the shooter. Another woman was shot in the hip, but her injury was not considered life-threatening. The Tuesday morning incident at Phelps Temporary Staffing Service happened around 8:45 a.m., Lassiter said. Louisburg is a town of about 3,000 people, about 30 miles northeast of Raleigh.
