Once a skill has been taught in lab, it is expected that the student will perform the skill in a safe, competent and knowledgeable manner in the hospital with clients. When you are with a client in the clinical setting, is not the time to practice. Practicing should take place in the lab in a controlled, safe environment. 8

9 We have excellent peer tutors available to assist you in the lab. They can assist with documentation, skills, theory courses or any other area you are experiencing difficulty in. There is no charge for the peer tutoring service. Just stop by the desk in the nursing lab on the 2 nd floor of the Center for Applied Health Sciences to arrange an appointment. Review your basic assessment skills prior to the start of the clinical/lab orientation especially blood pressure measurement, pulse, etc. The nursing lab is open throughout the summer if you wish to make an appointment to practice before September. As part of your lab fee, students will receive a lab kit in September, which will include most of the necessary supplies for your labs for the academic year. Should students wish to purchase extra supplies for practice, they may do so from Motion Specialties on Tecumseh Road East (bring your SCC ID badge for a discount). TEXTBOOKS Required textbooks can be found in the Campus Book Store under their course codes. The Campus Book Store is located on the first floor of the main building. Previous courses taken that have a course codes followed by a G can be applied towards your Practical Nursing diploma. If courses were taken at other educational institutions, advanced standing may be granted. The Coordinator will require a course outline, course syllabus and an official transcript to process your request. SCHEDULING/GENERAL ELECTIVES Student schedules will be available for download on the student self-serve site prior to the start of the fall semester. The clinical schedules that will be on your schedule will not be accurate. Please refer to Blackboard in mid-august for an accurate clinical schedule. All nursing core courses are scheduled for you, however; you will need to register for a general elective course of your choosing that fits within your schedule, instructions are available at: Can I apply for advanced standing? If you would like to discuss advanced standing for a previously completed course (with a minimum grade of 60 %), you can book an appointment to meet with the year I coordinator. Please bring a copy of your transcript and course outline. You will continue to attend the class as scheduled until you have been notified by the Registrar s office in writing that you have been granted advanced standing. 9

10 How do I drop or add a course? If you have previously taken a class at St. Clair College and are satisfied with the mark you achieved, you may wish to drop the class. You may add a class in its place if you wish. If you remain full time student status after dropping the course (based on course credits), there is no refund given for the Medication Administration Tests and Theory Tests Your first math test is scheduled for Tuesday September 4th from This semester, you will have a math test. In order to pass the test, you will need to achieve 85%. You will have three chances to achieve the 85%. If a student does not achieve 85% you will be assigned a grade of Unsatisfactory in PNR 316 and will not be allowed to continue in the program. Students are not permitted to give medications in the clinical area until 85% is achieved on the medication test, In order to pass clinical, the student must demonstrate safe medication administration, therefore repeated attempts at passing the math test may put you in jeopardy of not meeting the clinical competency to receive a passing grade for PNR 316. Non-programmable calculators are permitted. You are not permitted to use a cellphone or share a calculator Medication Administration Tests will be scheduled outside of your regular clinical and lab times. You will be notified of the dates and times during orientation in July. Work and/or vacation are NOT valid reasons to miss a Medication Administration test. If you miss the test you will be given a 0 on the test. MANDATORY remediation will be required for students who are unsuccessful on the medication administration test. Remediation will take place with nursing lab technologists. Due to the large class size, we are unable to allow students to write at a different time or date due to work schedules. We will be posting a Medication Administration and Dosage Calculation practice test within the next week or two. Please keep an eye on the Nursing Homepage. Best Wishes and Have a great summer!
