1 SECOND SEMESTER INSTRUCTIONS FOR INCOMING TRANSFER / LVN ADN STUDENTS Fall 2018 DECLARATION OF INTENT: Please read and sign the Declaration of Intent form indicating your decision to accept a place in the second semester of the Modesto Junior College Associate Degree Nursing Program. You will find this form attached to your notice of acceptance into the nursing program. Scan the completed declaration and send as an attachment to Kendis Bettencourt, Program Specialist for Allied Health, at bettencourtk@mjc.edu by July 19, 4:30 PM. If we have not heard from you by July 19, 5:00 p.m., we will assume your plans have changed and we will offer your place to another applicant. If you have concerns about your ability to enter the ADN Program at this time, please contact the Allied Health office at (209) to discuss your options. MANDATORY NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION: You are required to attend a New Student Orientation on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm in Glacier Hall, Room 201. You will receive your ADN Program Student Handbook, important information about the nursing program, participate in a tour of our facilities, and take a picture for your Allied Health clinical badge and student file. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about the ADN program. You will also have an opportunity to meet with the 2 nd semester instructors to receive information specific to second semester, and ask questions about the courses you will be taking in the upcoming semester. REGISTRATION FOR NURSING COURSES: Register for your nursing courses using PiratesNet, the online system of Modesto Junior College, at on your registration date. Frequently, check your student for notifications of important MJC and ADN course information. Register for the following: MNURSE 272: Section # 8272 Nursing Process: Geriatric Nursing 1 unit MNURSE 273: Section # 8273 Nursing Process: Maternal-Child Health 6.5 units MNURSK 800: Section # 800o Nursing Skills Development 0 units The MNURSE 272: Geriatric Nursing and MNURSE 273: Maternal-Child Nursing courses are concurrent, but MNURSE 272 is only a five week course (10/23/18 to 11/27/18). Both courses include a lab component in order to meet clinical expectations and hours. MNURSK 800 is a zero-unit course which accounts for arranged time spent in the Allied Health Skills Laboratory mastering skills associated with core nursing courses. Refer to the 2 nd Semester Welcome Letter Fall 2018 on the Accepted Applicants Documents/Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall 2018 link for more course information and a schedule of first week activities. 1

2 PRIMARY CLINICAL CLEARANCE DOCUMENTATION: In order to participate in clinical rotations at contracting health care facilities, students in the ADN Program must meet primary clinical clearance criteria: 1) Health clearance, including history & physical, immunization/titer standards, TST 2) Drug screen & Criminal background check 3) HealthStream online clinical orientation program 4) Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association) 5) DMC (Doctors Medical Center) Rotation Forms A & B; DMC Student Nurse Computer Access Request Form The clinical clearance deadline for all of the above is Wednesday August 8 th, 2018 by 4:30 pm No Exceptions! BEGIN THE CLEARANCE PROCESS IMMEDIATELTY TO ENSURE YOU MEET THIS DEADLINE! It will take diligence on your part to ensure that you meet the August 8 th, 2018 deadline. If you are not in compliance by the deadline, health care facilities will not permit you to participate in clinical rotations, and the ADN Program will not permit you to continue in the program. You are responsible for turning in completed copies of health clearance documents, drug screen, background check, BLS card, HealthStream certificates, and other documents listed on the To Do List-Transfer/LVN to ADN Accepted Students. (See this link under Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall Submit copies to Kendis Bettencourt in Allied Health, Room Health Clearance. Health Clearance consists of a history and physical exam, immunizations and positive antibody titers, and 2-step tuberculin skin test (TST). Download the documents for Incoming 2 nd Semester Students on the Accepted Applicants Documents link that pertain to health clearance and minimum immunization submission requirements. Follow all instructions with particular attention to detail, especially with regard to immunizations and titers. All students must have titers drawn for Varicella, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and Hepatitis B (if you have previously received 3 Hepatitis B immunizations). Titers can be coordinated through your doctor s office or by visiting MJC Health Services. If seeing your doctor, bring downloaded health clearance forms identifying the specific type of titer(s) you need so that the appropriate lab requisition can be made. (Note: To receive college Health Services, you must be registered for classes at MJC.) You must undergo a 2-step TST (tuberculin skin test). Both TST tests may be obtained from MJC Health Services (if registered for classes), from your doctor, or from the public health department. Access the Documentation of TB Skin Testing link under Accepted Applicants Documents/Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall 2018 and print the form for the Documentation of TB Skin Testing process. The instructions on the form will ensure that the 2-step TST will be performed according to our protocol. The second TST test cannot be placed until 10 days after the first TST test was placed, wherever testing is administered. 2

3 Students may alternatively receive the T-spot, which eliminates the need for a 2-step TST. Note: Varicella and MMR vaccines cannot be obtained until after the 2-step TST testing is complete. Once your history and physical, titers, and immunizations are complete, go to Health Services on either MJC campus with completed documentation materials and obtain a Final Clearance Form ( Golden Ticket ). Turn this form in to Kendis Bettencourt by Wednesday August 8, 2018 by 4:30 pm. 2. Drug Screen & Criminal Background Check. The company that is used for drug screening and criminal background check of Allied Health students is Castle Branch ( Access the Background and Drug Screen link under Accepted Applicants Documents/Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall 2018 and follow instructions. Start this process as soon as possible. (Note: In the event of a failed drug test and/or failed background check, students are subject to the standards and consequences imposed by any contracting clinical facility and the ADN Program. This may result in prohibition from participation in the clinical component of nursing courses, thus jeopardizing a student s ability to remain in the ADN Program.) 3. HealthStream online clinical orientation program. You must complete and submit certificates for two modules: 1) Rapid Regulatory Compliance I, and 2) Rapid Regulatory Compliance II. Find the link to HealthStream Self Registration Instructions under Accepted Applicants Documents/Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall 2018 and follow instructions. Each module costs $ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. ADN students must have a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification which may not lapse during the time they are in the program. You must provide documentation of recent Healthcare Provider BLS issued by the American Heart Association. Certifications from other agencies will not be accepted. If you need to take a BLS course for Healthcare Providers, you may register for a class by clicking on one of the links on your Declaration of Intent. 5. DMC (Doctors Medical Center) Rotation Forms A & B; DMC Student Nurse Computer Access Request Form. You must fill out the information requested on the DMC Student Rotation Forms A & B and the DMC Student Nurse Computer Access Request Form. Although you may not be assigned to this facility for N273: Maternal-Child Nursing, these forms are required in order to participate in the clinical component of the course if assigned to this facility. TEXTBOOKS: Check the ADN Textbook Grid on the Accepted Applicants Documents/ Incoming 2 nd Semester Transfer/Advanced Placement Students (LVNs): Fall 2018 link to see the list of 2 nd semester textbooks. Before you purchase textbooks, it is advisable that you wait until after 3

4 New Student Orientation. Your 2 nd semester faculty member will review these books with you during orientation. Textbooks may be purchased at the MJC Pirates Bookstore. Call the bookstore for times of operation, as they are subject to change. The bookstore number is (209) ; the website is (Note: The bookstore does not accept personal checks.) Both print and/or electronic options of some textbooks are available. Textbook publishers representatives will participate in the New Student Orientation to provide more information about textbook options. UNIFORMS AND MATERIALS: The official ADN Program uniform and patch for entering students must be purchased from Scrubs & Beyond; phone number (209) Before purchasing the uniform, please call Kendis Bettencourt at (209) , or visit her in Glacier Hall, Room 111. Options for uniforms for LVN/Transfer ADN students will be explained. You may not substitute other uniform tops or pants, even if similar in appearance to official ADN uniforms. White leather shoes with closed toe and heel must be worn with the uniform. Your materials kit containing supplies for skills you will be learning in 2 nd semester can be picked up from the Skills Laboratory with proof of zero balance owed to the college. You can pick up your materials kit at the start of the Fall 2018 semester. If you participate in Open Skills Lab Days on August 20 & 21, 2018 to review previously learned skills, you may get your kit then. Canvas: The online course management system utilized by ADN classes is Canvas. Course syllabi, handouts, PowerPoint outlines, announcements, and other materials are posted to students via Canvas. Students must have daily access to a computer in their home. The permanent Canvas site for Nurse 272: Geriatric Nursing and Nurse 273: Maternal-Child Nursing will be available for accessing course materials approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester. You will have access to Canvas once you have registered for classes and have been entered into PiratesNet. As part of New Student Orientation on Monday August 13 th, 2018, you will be shown how to access and download documents from Canvas. A FINAL IMPORTANT NOTE: The expectations of the ADN Program are rigorous and demanding of your time and resources. Maximum student commitment is required for success. Past students have reported underestimating how much time and work are required. We want you to be aware of these factors early on, so that you understand the time commitment required, and to give you time to plan accordingly with your family, employer, child care provider, etc. 4
