2 WORK PROCESS SCHEDULE O*NET-SOC CODE: RAPIDS CODE: 1051CB This schedule is attached to and a part of these Standards for the above identified occupation. 1. TYPE OF OCCUPATION Time-based Competency-based Hybrid 2. TERM OF APPRENTICESHIP The term of the occupation is one year with an OJL attainment of 4,000 hours, supplemented by the minimum required 288 hours of related instruction. 3. RATIO OF APPRENTICES TO JOURNEYWORKERS Consistent with proper supervision, training, safety, and continuity of employment throughout the apprenticeship, the ratio of apprentices to journeyworkers will be: One (1) apprentice may be employed in each suite/room, and/or job site employing one (1) qualified Surgical Technologist or Operating Room Nurse, and one (1) additional apprentice for each additional qualified journeyworker employed thereafter. 4. APPRENTICE WAGE SCHEDULE Apprentices shall be paid a progressively increasing schedule of wages based on either a percentage or a dollar amount of the current hourly Surgical Technologist journeyworker wage rate, which is: $25.45 per hour. 1 st 6 months + 1,000 OJL hours = 60 percent 2 nd 6 months + 1,000 OJL hours = 70 percent 3 rd 6 months + 1,000 OJL hours = 80 percent 4 th 6 months + 1,000 OJL hours = 90 percent Note: Journeyworker hourly wage rate based on the Alaska mean wage data: 5. 3 WORK PROCESS SCHEDULE O*NET-SOC CODE: RAPIDS CODE: 1051CB During the term of apprenticeship, the Apprentice shall receive such instruction and experience, in all branches of the occupation, as is necessary to develop a practical and versatile worker. Major processes in which Apprentices will be trained (although not necessarily in the order listed) and approximate hours (not necessarily continuous) to be spent in each are as follows: Surgical Technologist Work Processes Demonstrated Competence Approximate OJL Hours A. Orientation I Introduction to Operating Room Department procedures and practices, including attendance, timeliness breaks, lunch time, locker rooms, required surgical attire, and sign-in procedures. 2. Professional relationships in the Operating Room and review of roles/position descriptions, with emphasis on teamwork. 3. Safety in the Operating Room environment, including OSHA regulations, blood borne pathogen safety, infection control procedures, asepsis, ergonomic safety, prevention of sharps injuries, fire safety, radiological safety, and patient safety 4. Introduction to relationships with other departments, including CSS, Housekeeping, Radiology, Laboratory, Day Surgery, Endoscopy, and Inpatient Units. B. Surgical Procedures Preoperative Procedures: II 1, Plan for scheduled procedure by checking Surgery Schedule, reading preference card, consulting with surgeon if necessary, consulting with other team members regarding possible conflicts for equipment or instruments 2. Select appropriate instruments and equipment for the schedule surgery 3. Assess and plan for age related needs of patient 4. Assist in opening the sterile equipment and supplies and prepare the sterile field 5. Recognize potential and actual emergencies and prepare by having appropriate equipment, instruments, or supplies available A.1-3

Seek resources or assistance as needed to become knowledgeable about the procedure, equipment, or instruments Intraoperative Procedures: III 1, Perform surgical hand scrub and gown and glove self 2. Prepare sterile field for maximum efficiency and convenience, being fully ready when the surgeon arrives 3. Verify that equipment and instruments on the sterile field are complete and in working order prior to the start of surgery 4. Demonstrate knowledge of instruments and equipment, their use and function 5. Demonstrate knowledge of sterile technique, monitor sterile field, identify breaks in sterile technique, and take corrective action 6. Perform counts with the circulating nurse at the prescribed intervals during surgery, following unit procedure 7. Demonstrate knowledge of principles of draping the patient to create a sterile field, and assist in draping procedures 8. Gown and glove the surgeon and any other assistants at the sterile field 9. Pass instruments to surgeon correctly and safely 10. Prepare sutures for use 11. Keep sterile field organize and orderly 12. Anticipate surgeon s needs and prepare in advance for anticipated needs 13. Handle specimens correctly 14. Follow safety procedures, such as handling of sharps on the sterile field, keeping electrocautery instruments in a safe place, and labeling of medications in the sterile field 15. Assure implants used in the case are communicated to the circulating nurse Postoperative Procedures: IV Assist in cleaning patient s skin, applying dressing, and if necessary, repositioning the patient at the end of the procedure 2. Assist in moving patient from operating room table to stretcher or bed 3. Demonstrate due care and accountability for instruments used in the case 4. Send the case cart of used instruments to CSS after A.1-4

5 properly placing them in the cart according to unit procedure C. Other Operating Room Team Procedures V Assist in turnover procedures between surgical cases 2. Obtain blood from Blood Bank upon request 3. Hand carry specimens to the Laboratory upon request 4. Operate flash sterilizer, selecting appropriate cycles for specific items or loads 5. Maintain an orderly environment by returning items to their designated locations and restocking unused items after cases are done 6. Provide relief for other scrub personnel 7. Assist in positioning patients, moving equipment or patients, locating needed items, or other duties as requested D. Instrument Processing VI Work in CSS in the decontamination area to learn how to clean and decontaminate instruments and equipment 2.
