Specialties can either be broad (e.g. pharmacotherapy specialists) or focused (e.g. oncology or cardiology). Pharmacy specialization requires an advanced body of knowledge distinct of the general practitioner and a specialized or enhanced depth of competency including knowledge, skills, attitudes and accountabilities based on the physical, social and health sciences, sufficient to manage the most complex of cases and provide clinical leadership in the field. Pharmacist Specialty Certification represents a formal designation to assure a standard of knowledge and qualification in a subject area and/or to perform a job or task. assessment process administered by a NGO that grants a time limited credential in a designated area of specialty to a ph. practitioner whose education, experience, knowledge and skills meet or exceed the predetermined standards and qualifications established by the organization....criteria and standards to maintain continued competence and retain the credential. * HEALTH CAREPROVIDER SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION Medicine (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) Numerous specialty designations, examinations administered by RCPSC Nursing Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) offers RN certification in 20 nursing practice specialties Advanced nursing practice: Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners Masters or doctoral degree in nursing + extensive nursing knowledge and skills + clinical experience in specialty area Provinces/territories administer NP exams Physiotherapy Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators recognizes specialties & administers credentialing examinations Provincial Colleges consider approval of specialty certifications Dentistry (Royal College of Dentists of Canada) Nine recognized dental specialties (e.g. endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics) 1

To establish standards for certification and recertification of pharmacists in recognized pharmacy practice specialties; 3. To grant qualified pharmacists certification and recertification in recognized pharmacy practice specialties; 4. To serve as a coordinating agency and informational clearing house for organizations and pharmacists in recognized pharmacy specialties; 5. To enhance public/consumer protection by developing effective certification programs for specialty practices in pharmacy. Eligibility Requirements The minimum requirements for this specialty certification are: Graduation from a pharmacy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or a program outside the U.S. that qualifies the individual to practice in the jurisdiction. Current, active license to practice pharmacy in the U.S. or another jurisdiction. Completion of four years of practice experience,* post pharmacist licensure, with at least 50% of time spent in ambulatory care pharmacy activities (as defined by the BPS Ambulatory Care Content Outline) OR Completion of a PGY1 residency** plus one additional year of practice post pharmacist licensure* with at least 50% of time spent in ambulatory care pharmacy activities (as defined by the Ambulatory Care Content Outline) OR Completion of a specialty (PGY2) residency** in ambulatory care pharmacy AND Achieving a passing score on the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialty Certification Examination BPS VISION Vision Statement The Board of Pharmacy Specialties, the premier post licensure certification agency, will ensure that BPS Board Certified Pharmacists are recognized within healthcare delivery systems while serving the needs of the public and the pharmacy profession. BPS MISSION Mission Statement The Mission of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties is to improve patient care by promoting the recognition and value of specialized training, knowledge, and skills in pharmacy and specialty board certification of pharmacists.
