1 NHS clinical commissioning groups in Leeds Let s celebrate! Practice nursing conference in Leeds 10 September Leeds Metropolitan University, Headingley Campus

2 We are proud to support: Welcome Following on from the success of our first ever conference for practice nurses in Leeds we are back again and this time our theme is our own seventh C for nursing; Celebrate. We wanted to celebrate and promote the valuable role played by practice nursing in the delivery of healthcare for our patients here in Leeds. You can find out more about the campaign by visiting: hellomynameis.org.uk This year we are privileged to have Dr Kate Granger here who is an inspiration to many and founder of hello my name is a campaign for compassionate care. (Please note at the time of writing this programme Kate s health had deteriorated and this means we are not able to confirm if she will be attending today).

3 Dr Kate Granger Dr Alison Payne GP & GP Tutor, Willenhall Primary Care Centre and GPwSI - sexual health, gynaecology - City of Coventry Health Centre Final Year Specialist Registrar in Medicine for the Elderly at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and founder of global Hello my name is movement for compassionate care. Kate is a final year Specialist Registrar in Medicine for the Elderly working in Leeds. One of her main clinical interests is palliative care in the acute hospital setting and she is currently studying for a University Certificate in Palliative Medicine. Kate is also a terminally ill cancer patient with a very rare type of sarcoma, and is currently having palliative chemotherapy for a recent progression in her disease. Kate has written books, as well as posting tweets (@GrangerKate) and blogs regularly about her experiences of illness. She is passionate about quality improvement and how she can use her experiences and observations as a patient to make the care delivered in the NHS better. Kate started the Hello my name is campaign following her own experience as a patient where she made the stark observation that many staff looking after her did not introduce themselves before delivering care. Find out more about Hello my name is : Alison Payne is a GP based in a deprived suburb of Coventry and has a predominant non-white ethnicity in the area which is sub Saharan African. She has worked for several years in a health centre for asylum seekers and refugees, which is where she first learnt about the phenomenon of female genital mutilation (FGM) and its effects on women. Since then she has presented to medical students about FGM and is committed to raising awareness among her colleagues. Alison also works as a GP in sexual health and gynaecology. She worked in Sri Lanka at the start of the civil war in 1983, and in 2005 worked in a rural clinic in Guatemala for three months. She has travelled a lot over the years - hiking, cycling and backpacking - and visited countries where FGM is practised. She uses her experience of other cultures to broach difficult subjects with her patients with empathy and respect. She has lived and worked in New Zealand and returned to the UK to care for elderly parents. The opportunities for activism here are great, and there is much work to be done.

4 Catherine Gill Lead Partner for Learning and Teaching, Caritas Group Practice Nick Hart Leeds Apprenticeship Hub Manager, Leeds City Council Catherine has worked in the NHS since 1979 with a predominately general practice career from She was involved in developing the independent prescribing programme for nurses and midwives at the University of Leeds in 2001 and was one of the first nurses in the UK to qualify as a nurse prescriber. She was appointed as module leader of the prescribing programme in 2003 and as well as involvement in research of advanced nursing roles she has co-authored chapters for an undergraduate medical student prescribing textbook. She completed a Masters degree and qualified as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in 1997 and together with two other ANPs she created Caritas Health Partnership and successfully tendered for a 9000 patient GP contract in The practice is now an established Advanced Training Practice (Health Education England/Yorkshire and Humber) promoting inter-professional learning and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate nurses and doctors. She trained and attained appointment as an Associate GP Trainer in 2012 and this year was successful in revalidation for a further three years. She is now lobbying and working to achieve a standardised General Practice Nurse Vocational Training Scheme (VTS) in line with the General Practice VTS for doctors. Currently the citywide lead for apprenticeships in Leeds. The Apprenticeship Hub Service offers free impartial support to Leeds based employers wishing to recruit apprentices to their business. Tailored packages of support are put into place for each employer including: sourcing training providers and appropriate frameworks, support with writing job descriptions, and free advertising and marketing vacancies to young people. The Apprenticeship Hub also has an extensive young person engagement programme operating throughout Leeds including: year round school engagement activities, apprenticeship events, apprenticeship application workshops and more. Promoting Apprenticeships to young people and educating them about the different opportunities available ensures the service generates a good supply chain of suitable candidates available for the employers we work with.
