1 Intensive Outpatient Program A Psychiatry Service Program PROGRAM HANDBOOK The Intensive Outpatient Program is a comprehensive program that provides psychiatric treatment and services that support patient behavioral change within the context of interpersonal exploration. The Program focus is on addressing patient needs in the areas of life management, self-understanding, interpersonal relationships and attainment of personal satisfaction and meaning. A desired outcome for the program is to sustain the patient s maintenance in the community while reducing multiple psychiatric hospitalizations and emergency room presentations.
2 WELCOME -TO- BEN TAUB PSYCHIATRY SERVICE INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM We, the staff of the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), want to help you feel comfortable in your new environment. Learning the policies, rules and regulations of the program will help you benefit from the treatment and services the program offers. The IOP provides mental health services to men and women. The staff is made up of a professional treatment team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, chemical dependency counselors, trainees, and administrative personnel. The treatment team assists you in setting treatment goals. You will also have a primary clinician who serves as your individual therapist to help you achieve your goals. We expect you to take an active part in your treatment and to make use of the therapeutic, supportive, and educational services the program provides. You are responsible for knowing the goals for your treatment plan, following treatment recommendations, taking prescribed medication, and interacting constructively with staff and other patients. We will support your strengths and capacity for health and growth. Together we will work to increase your sense of well-being and eventual independent functioning in the community.
3 OUR TEAM Karen Simpson - Patient Coordinator Asim Shah, M.D. - Medical Director Catherine Barber, Ph.D. Program Director Paul Hoisington, L.M.S.W.-A.C.P. - Social Work Darryl Bailey, L.P.C., L.C.D.C, L.M.F.T. Life Skills Theodora Randle, M.A., O.T.R. Occupational Therapy Janet Hall, C.O.T.A. Occupational Therapy Princess Collins, R. N. Nurse Manager BEN TAUB BAYLOR PARTNERSHIP The doctors who staff the Hospital District's clinics and hospitals come from the nationally recognized medical school, Baylor College of Medicine. The Hospital District's facilities are primary teaching locations for the medical school. The faculty, resident physicians, and psychology interns who practice at teaching hospitals offer their patients the very latest in medical and psychological knowledge. Each year, dozens of doctors from Baylor are honored by being named to lists of the "best" doctors around the country in their specialized fields. The Hospital District and the District's patients are fortunate to have this partnership.
4 INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM INITIAL TREATMENT PLAN Entering the I.O.P. Before beginning IOP, I will attend the Prep Group (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:30 9:30 a.m.) for as many weeks as necessary for the treatment team to evaluate my readiness for IOP. I will maintain sobriety from ALL substances for at least 30 days prior to entering the program. I will discuss my treatment goals with my primary physician and clinician. The treatment team and I will work out a plan to reach my goals. I will follow this treatment plan, which sets out how I want to change my life and myself. Organizing My Time I will arrive before 8:30am and stay until the program ends at 12:15 p.m. I will be on time for every session. I will use my breaks to take bathroom breaks and snack time. I will plan ahead for time off. I will discuss plans and request time off in-group. In the event I will not be able to attend IOP, I will call in my absence before 8:30am to and to my individual therapist. If I must leave before the end of the treatment day, I will discuss the need with the treatment team and will sign out when I leave. Leaving the Program Examples of behavior that would impede reaching my goals are: *Frequent absences without prearrangement or phoning in *Consistent tardiness or absence from scheduled activities or groups *Testing positive for drugs or alcohol *Not following my treatment plan *Behaviors that are inconsistent with the intensive outpatient program. When I have completed the IOP and achieved my treatment goals, I am ready for discharge. I may continue to receive medication management and attend outpatient groups as recommended by the treatment team.
