5 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY IN THE MEDICAL ENVIRONMENT SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 80 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE This unit is designed for those wishing to prepare for a career, or to enhance career prospects, in a medical or caring environment, eg clerical officer, medical secretary, medical receptionist in general medical practice or hospital, administrators, health care employees. CONTENT/CONTEXT The following information gives further clarification regarding the context in which the outcomes and performance criteria are to be achieved. The emphasis in this unit is on the usage and recognition of medical terms within the context of medical specialities. Specialities should be expanded beyond the range indicated to include Radiology, Radiotherapy, Oncology and Laboratory Services (Haematology, Pathology Bacteriology, Biochemistry etc). Candidates should be introduced to medical terms relating to these specialities on an ongoing basis. It is anticipated that candidates will use a keyboard and audio skills to generate the hard copy evidence required and it would therefore be of benefit if medical audio tapes were made available throughout course work. For those candidates without the skills detailed above, the assessment allows for the evidence to be produced in handwritten format. Medical reference sources should be widened to include the BNF and electronic sources as well as the use of medical dictionaries and MIMS. As part of self-study, candidate should be encouraged to read available medical periodicals and medical magazines and to view quality medical television programmes. 5

6 APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE Outcome 1 Evidence for this outcome is likely to be generated from: medical reports; referral letter; discharge summaries; discharge letters; operation reports; case history. REFERENCES 1. Guide to unit writing. 2. For a fuller discussion on assessment issues, please refer to SQA s Guide to Assessment. 3. Information for centres on SQA s operating procedures is contained in SQA s Guide to Procedures. 4. For details of other SQA publications, please consult SQA s publications list.
