5 Current Outbreak in West Africa Avoid non-essential travel to Guinea and Sierra Leone. Use enhanced precautions when going to Liberia There is no travel ban from these countries Airport screening of passengers occurs at exit from all three countries Passengers from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone traveling to the U.S. MUST arrive at JFK, Newark, Washington-Dulles, Chicago or Atlanta airports where there are enhanced screening processes 5

13 Monitoring in San Francisco Since October, 80 travelers from Ebola-affected countries have been monitored by SFDPH Depending on the traveler s level of risk, monitoring is done by daily phone and/or video conference An intake interview is done on every traveler to assess risk and establish rapport Communicable Disease Public Health Nurses do the monitoring; they make every effort to make the process as convenient as possible for the travelers To date, zero of the travelers to California, including San Francisco, have been diagnosed with Ebola. 13

14 Take Home Points The Ebola Virus Disease outbreak is slowly coming under control, although cases continue to occur. Travelers from the affected region require ongoing monitoring SFDPH remains ready to activate in the event that response needs outstrip current resources Ebola preparedness/response has helped us build capacity and identify areas for growth for future communicable disease emergencies 14
